GreekἮν δέ τις ἀσθενῶν, Λάζαρος ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐκ τῆς κώμης Μαρίας καὶ Μάρθας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς.
Orthodox ReadingA certain man was ill, El'azar of Bethanyⓘ, from the village of Miryamⓘ and of Marta her sisterⓘ.

Greekἦν δὲ ⸀Μαριὰμ ἡ ἀλείψασα τὸν κύριον μύρῳ καὶ ἐκμάξασα τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς, ἧς ὁ ἀδελφὸς Λάζαρος ἠσθένει.
Orthodox ReadingIt was Miryam who anointed the Lord with ointmentⓘ and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother El'azar was ill.

Greekἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Αὕτη ἡ ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλ’ ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ δι’ αὐτῆς.
Orthodox ReadingHearing this, Jesus said: «This illness is not toward deathⓘ, but is for the glory of Godⓘ, so that the Son of God may be glorified through itⓘ».

Greekἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Οὐχὶ δώδεκα ⸂ὧραί εἰσιν⸃ τῆς ἡμέρας; ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, οὐ προσκόπτει, ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει·
Orthodox ReadingJesus answered: «Are there not twelve hours of the dayⓘ? If anyone walks by day, he does not stumbleⓘ, because he sees the light of this worldⓘ.

Greekἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτί, προσκόπτει, ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ.

Greekταῦτα εἶπεν, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς· Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται, ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingHe said these things, and then he adds: «El'azar our friend has fallen asleepⓘ, but I am going to awaken himⓘ».

Greekεἶπαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ ⸀αὐτῷ· Κύριε, εἰ κεκοίμηται σωθήσεται.

Greekεἰρήκει δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ. ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἔδοξαν ὅτι περὶ τῆς κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου λέγει.

Greekεἶπεν οὖν Θωμᾶς ὁ λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς· Ἄγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
