Ἦν δέ τις ἀσθενῶν, Λάζαρος ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐκ τῆς κώμης Μαρίας καὶ Μάρθας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς.
Un certo Lazzaro di Betània, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta sua sorella, era malato.
A certain man was ill, El'azar of Bethanyⓘ, from the village of Miryamⓘ and of Marta her sisterⓘ.

ἦν δὲ ⸀Μαριὰμ ἡ ἀλείψασα τὸν κύριον μύρῳ καὶ ἐκμάξασα τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς, ἧς ὁ ἀδελφὸς Λάζαρος ἠσθένει.
Maria era quella che cosparse di profumo il Signore e gli asciugò i piedi con i suoi capelli; suo fratello Lazzaro era malato.
It was Miryam who anointed the Lord with ointmentⓘ and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother El'azar was ill.

ἀπέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσαι· Κύριε, ἴδε ὃν φιλεῖς ἀσθενεῖ.
Le sorelle mandarono dunque a dirgli: «Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è malato».
The sisters therefore sent word to him, saying: «Lordⓘ, behold, he whom you love is illⓘ».

ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Αὕτη ἡ ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλ’ ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ δι’ αὐτῆς.
All'udire questo, Gesù disse: «Questa malattia non porterà alla morte, ma è per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo di essa il Figlio di Dio venga glorificato».
Hearing this, Jesus said: «This illness is not toward deathⓘ, but is for the glory of Godⓘ, so that the Son of God may be glorified through itⓘ».

ἠγάπα δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον.
Gesù amava Marta e sua sorella e Lazzaro.
Jesus loved Marta and her sister and El'azarⓘ.

ὡς οὖν ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἀσθενεῖ, τότε μὲν ἔμεινεν ἐν ᾧ ἦν τόπῳ δύο ἡμέρας·
Quando sentì che era malato, rimase per due giorni nel luogo dove si trovava.
When therefore he heard that he was ill, he remained two daysⓘ in the place where he was.

ἔπειτα μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς· Ἄγωμεν εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν πάλιν.
Poi disse ai discepoli: «Andiamo di nuovo in Giudea!».
Then, after this, he says to the disciples: «Let us go into Judea againⓘ».

λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί· Ῥαββί, νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ;
Gli dissero i discepoli: «Rabbì, poco fa i Giudei cercavano di lapidarti e tu ci vai di nuovo?».
The disciples say to him: «Rabbiⓘ, just now the Judeans were seeking to stone youⓘ, and are you going there again?».

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Οὐχὶ δώδεκα ⸂ὧραί εἰσιν⸃ τῆς ἡμέρας; ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, οὐ προσκόπτει, ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει·
Rispose Gesù: «Non sono forse dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo;
Jesus answered: «Are there not twelve hours of the dayⓘ? If anyone walks by day, he does not stumbleⓘ, because he sees the light of this worldⓘ.

ἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτί, προσκόπτει, ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ.
ma se cammina di notte, inciampa, perché la luce non è in lui».
But if anyone walks by night, he stumbles, because the light is not in himⓘ».

ταῦτα εἶπεν, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς· Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται, ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν.
Disse queste cose e poi soggiunse loro: «Lazzaro, il nostro amico, si è addormentato; ma io vado a svegliarlo».
He said these things, and then he adds: «El'azar our friend has fallen asleepⓘ, but I am going to awaken himⓘ».

εἶπαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ ⸀αὐτῷ· Κύριε, εἰ κεκοίμηται σωθήσεται.
Gli dissero allora i discepoli: «Signore, se si è addormentato, si salverà».
The disciples then said: «Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be savedⓘ».

εἰρήκει δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ. ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἔδοξαν ὅτι περὶ τῆς κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου λέγει.
Gesù aveva parlato della morte di lui; essi invece pensarono che parlasse del riposo del sonno.
But Jesus had spoken of his death; they thought that he was speaking of the repose of sleepⓘ.

τότε οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ· Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν,
Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto
Then Jesus told them plainlyⓘ: «El'azar has diedⓘ,

καὶ χαίρω δι’ ὑμᾶς, ἵνα πιστεύσητε, ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ· ἀλλὰ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν.
e io sono contento per voi di non essere stato là, affinché voi crediate; ma andiamo da lui!».
and I rejoice for your sake, so that you may believeⓘ, that I was not thereⓘ; but let us go to him».

εἶπεν οὖν Θωμᾶς ὁ λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς· Ἄγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
Allora Tommaso, chiamato Dìdimo, disse agli altri discepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui!».
Then Thomas called Didymusⓘ said to his fellow disciples: «Let us also go, that we may die with himⓘ».
