GreekἌγουσιν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ Καϊάφα εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον· ἦν δὲ πρωΐ· καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον, ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν ⸀ἀλλὰ φάγωσιν τὸ πάσχα.
Orthodox ReadingThey lead Jesus, then, from the house of Caiaphas, of the high priests of the Temple summit (the archiereîs kohanim of the summit, of Sadducean extraction, the Saddoukaioi) — Caiaphasⓘ to the praetoriumⓘ. It was dawnⓘ; and they did not enter the praetorium, so as not to contract the impurity of the pagan dwelling (tum'at ohel, the ritual impurity of the gentile habitation) — which would have required immersion (tevilah), precluding the meal — and to be able to eat the korban Pesach (the sacrificial paschal lamb) of the Passoverⓘ.

Greekεἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ⸀ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς, καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑμῶν κρίνατε αὐτόν. ⸀εἶπον αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Ἡμῖν οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἀποκτεῖναι οὐδένα·
Orthodox ReadingPilate said to them, then: «Take him yourselves and judge him according to your Torahⓘ». The Judean leaders (the Ioudaîoi)ⓘ said to him: «It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death» — capital judgments (dinei nefashot) are withdrawn from us, reserved to the ius gladii of the prefect capital judgmentsⓘ.

Orthodox ReadingJesus answered: «My kingship — the messianic malkhut — does not draw its origin (ek) from this worldⓘ; if my kingship drew its origin from this world, my subordinatesⓘ would have fought so that I might not be handed over to the Judean leadersⓘ; but as it is, my kingship is not from here».

Greekεἶπεν οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Οὐκοῦν βασιλεὺς εἶ σύ; ἀπεκρίθη ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Σὺ λέγεις ὅτι βασιλεύς ⸀εἰμι. ἐγὼ εἰς τοῦτο γεγέννημαι καὶ εἰς τοῦτο ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα μαρτυρήσω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ· πᾶς ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀκούει μου τῆς φωνῆς.
Orthodox ReadingPilate, then, said to him: «So you are a king?». Jesus answered: «You say soⓘ that I am a king. For this I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world: that I might bear witness to the truthⓘ. Whoever is of the truthⓘ hears my voice».

Orthodox ReadingPilate says to him: «What is truthⓘ?». And having said this, he went out again toward the Judean leaders and says to them: «I find no fault in himⓘ.

Greekἔστιν δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν ἵνα ἕνα ⸂ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν⸃ ἐν τῷ πάσχα· βούλεσθε οὖν ⸄ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν⸅ τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
Orthodox ReadingThere is, however, a customⓘ among you, that I release one of them to you for the Passover (Pesach), the pilgrimage feast (régel)ⓘ; do you want, then, that I release to you the king of the Jews?».

Greekἐκραύγασαν οὖν ⸀πάλιν λέγοντες· Μὴ τοῦτον ἀλλὰ τὸν Βαραββᾶν. ἦν δὲ ὁ Βαραββᾶς λῃστής.
Orthodox ReadingThey cried out, then, again, saying: «Not this man, but Barabbasⓘ!». Barabbas was an armed rebel (biryōn)ⓘ.
