GreekἘγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ⸀Ἡρῴδου βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἱερεύς τις ὀνόματι Ζαχαρίας ἐξ ἐφημερίας Ἀβιά, ⸀καὶ γυνὴ ⸀αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Ἀαρών, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Ἐλισάβετ.

Orthodox ReadingIt came to pass in the days of Herod, king of Judeaⓘ that there was a priest of the kohanimⓘ named Zechariah Zacharíasⓘ, of the priestly division (mishmar) of Abijahⓘ, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaronⓘ, named Elizabethⓘ.

Greekἦσαν δὲ δίκαιοι ἀμφότεροι ⸀ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ, πορευόμενοι ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ἐντολαῖς καὶ δικαιώμασιν τοῦ κυρίου ἄμεμπτοι.

Greekκαὶ αὐτὸς προελεύσεται ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ δυνάμει Ἠλίου, ἐπιστρέψαι καρδίας πατέρων ἐπὶ τέκνα καὶ ἀπειθεῖς ἐν φρονήσει δικαίων, ἑτοιμάσαι κυρίῳ λαὸν κατεσκευασμένον.

Orthodox ReadingAnd he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijahⓘ, to turn back the hearts of the fathers toward the childrenⓘ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare for the Lord a people made ready.

Greekκαὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἐγώ εἰμι Γαβριὴλ ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ἀπεστάλην λαλῆσαι πρὸς σὲ καὶ εὐαγγελίσασθαί σοι ταῦτα·

Orthodox ReadingAnd behold, you will be silent and unable to speakⓘ until the day these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time».

Greekἐξελθὼν δὲ οὐκ ⸀ἐδύνατο λαλῆσαι αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν ὅτι ὀπτασίαν ἑώρακεν ἐν τῷ ναῷ· καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν διανεύων αὐτοῖς, καὶ διέμενεν κωφός.

Orthodox ReadingComing out, he could not speak to them, and they understood that he had seen a visionⓘ in the Temple; he was making signs to them and remained mute.
