GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐλθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκόν τινος τῶν ἀρχόντων τῶν Φαρισαίων σαββάτῳ φαγεῖν ἄρτον καὶ αὐτοὶ ἦσαν παρατηρούμενοι αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd it came to pass that, when he entered the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees (perushim), the observant ones, on Shabbatⓘ to eat breadⓘ, they were watching him closely.

Greekκαὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπός τις ἦν ὑδρωπικὸς ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd behold, before him there was a man who was dropsicalⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς νομικοὺς καὶ Φαρισαίους λέγων· ⸀Ἔξεστιν τῷ σαββάτῳ ⸂θεραπεῦσαι ἢ οὔ⸃;
Orthodox ReadingAnd answering, Jesus said to the teachers of the Torah (soferim) and the Pharisees (perushim): «Is it lawful or not to heal on Shabbatⓘ?».

Greekοἱ δὲ ἡσύχασαν. καὶ ἐπιλαβόμενος ἰάσατο αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπέλυσεν.
Orthodox ReadingBut they kept silentⓘ. He took him, healed him and sent him away.

Greek⸀καὶ πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἶπεν· Τίνος ὑμῶν υἱὸς ἢ βοῦς εἰς φρέαρ ⸀πεσεῖται, καὶ οὐκ εὐθέως ἀνασπάσει αὐτὸν ⸀ἐν ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ σαββάτου;
Orthodox ReadingAnd he said to them: «Which of you, if a son or an ox falls into a well, will not at once pull it out on the day of Shabbatⓘ?».

Greekκαὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσαν ⸀ἀνταποκριθῆναι πρὸς ταῦτα.

GreekἜλεγεν δὲ πρὸς τοὺς κεκλημένους παραβολήν, ἐπέχων πῶς τὰς πρωτοκλισίας ἐξελέγοντο, λέγων πρὸς αὐτούς·

GreekὍταν κληθῇς ὑπό τινος εἰς γάμους, μὴ κατακλιθῇς εἰς τὴν πρωτοκλισίαν, μήποτε ἐντιμότερός σου ᾖ κεκλημένος ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ

Greekκαὶ ἐλθὼν ὁ σὲ καὶ αὐτὸν καλέσας ἐρεῖ σοι· Δὸς τούτῳ τόπον, καὶ τότε ἄρξῃ μετὰ αἰσχύνης τὸν ἔσχατον τόπον κατέχειν.
Orthodox Readingand the one who invited both you and him come and say to you: Give him the place! And then in shame you will begin to take the lowest place.

Greekἀλλ’ ὅταν κληθῇς πορευθεὶς ἀνάπεσε εἰς τὸν ἔσχατον τόπον, ἵνα ὅταν ἔλθῃ ὁ κεκληκώς σε ⸀ἐρεῖ σοι· Φίλε, προσανάβηθι ἀνώτερον· τότε ἔσται σοι δόξα ἐνώπιον ⸀πάντων τῶν συνανακειμένων σοι.
Orthodox ReadingBut when you are invited, go and recline at the lowest placeⓘ, so that when the one who invited you comes he may say to you: Friendⓘ, come up higher! Then you will have gloryⓘ before all the fellow guests.

Greekὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὑψῶν ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται καὶ ὁ ταπεινῶν ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται.
Orthodox ReadingFor whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exaltedⓘ».

GreekἜλεγεν δὲ καὶ τῷ κεκληκότι αὐτόν· Ὅταν ποιῇς ἄριστον ἢ δεῖπνον, μὴ φώνει τοὺς φίλους σου μηδὲ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου μηδὲ τοὺς συγγενεῖς σου μηδὲ γείτονας πλουσίους, μήποτε καὶ αὐτοὶ ⸂ἀντικαλέσωσίν σε⸃ καὶ γένηται ⸂ἀνταπόδομά σοι⸃.
Orthodox ReadingHe also said to the one who had invited him: «When you give a luncheon or a dinnerⓘ, do not call your friends nor your brothers nor your relatives nor your rich neighbors, lest in turn they repay youⓘ and a repayment be made to you.

Greekἀλλ’ ὅταν ⸂δοχὴν ποιῇς⸃, κάλει πτωχούς, ἀναπείρους, χωλούς, τυφλούς·
Orthodox ReadingBut when you give a banquetⓘ, call the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blindⓘ;

Greekκαὶ μακάριος ἔσῃ, ὅτι οὐκ ἔχουσιν ἀνταποδοῦναί σοι, ἀνταποδοθήσεται γάρ σοι ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει τῶν δικαίων.
Orthodox Readingand you will be blessedⓘ because they have no way to repay you: it will be repaid to you at the resurrection of the justⓘ».

GreekἈκούσας δέ τις τῶν συνανακειμένων ταῦτα εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Μακάριος ⸀ὅστις φάγεται ⸀ἄρτον ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ.
Orthodox ReadingOne of the fellow guests, hearing this, said to him: «Blessed is the one who will eat bread in the Kingdom of Godⓘ!».

Orthodox ReadingHe said to him: «A man was giving a great dinnerⓘ and invited many.

Greekκαὶ ἀπέστειλεν τὸν δοῦλον αὐτοῦ τῇ ὥρᾳ τοῦ δείπνου εἰπεῖν τοῖς κεκλημένοις· Ἔρχεσθε, ὅτι ἤδη ἕτοιμά ⸀ἐστιν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he sent his servantⓘ at the hour of the dinner to say to those invited: Come, for now it is readyⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ἤρξαντο ἀπὸ μιᾶς ⸂πάντες παραιτεῖσθαι⸃. ὁ πρῶτος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἀγρὸν ἠγόρασα καὶ ἔχω ἀνάγκην ⸀ἐξελθὼν ἰδεῖν αὐτόν· ἐρωτῶ σε, ἔχε με παρῃτημένον.
Orthodox ReadingAnd they all, with one voice, began to make excusesⓘ. The first: I have bought a field and must go to see it; I beg you, hold me excusedⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ἕτερος εἶπεν· Ζεύγη βοῶν ἠγόρασα πέντε καὶ πορεύομαι δοκιμάσαι αὐτά· ἐρωτῶ σε, ἔχε με παρῃτημένον.
Orthodox ReadingAnother: I have bought five yoke of oxen and I am going to try them out; hold me excused.

Greekκαὶ ἕτερος εἶπεν· Γυναῖκα ἔγημα καὶ διὰ τοῦτο οὐ δύναμαι ἐλθεῖν.
Orthodox ReadingAnother: I have taken a wifeⓘ and for this reason I cannot come.

Greekκαὶ παραγενόμενος ὁ ⸀δοῦλος ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ κυρίῳ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα. τότε ὀργισθεὶς ὁ οἰκοδεσπότης εἶπεν τῷ δούλῳ αὐτοῦ· Ἔξελθε ταχέως εἰς τὰς πλατείας καὶ ῥύμας τῆς πόλεως, καὶ τοὺς πτωχοὺς καὶ ἀναπείρους καὶ ⸂τυφλοὺς καὶ χωλοὺς⸃ εἰσάγαγε ὧδε.
Orthodox ReadingAnd having returned, the servant reported this to his lord. Then the master of the houseⓘ, in anger, said to the servant: Go out at once into the squares and streets of the city and bring here the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lameⓘ.

Greekκαὶ εἶπεν ὁ δοῦλος· Κύριε, γέγονεν ⸀ὃ ἐπέταξας, καὶ ἔτι τόπος ἐστίν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the servant said: Lordⓘ, it has been done as you ordered, and there is still room.

Greekκαὶ εἶπεν ὁ κύριος πρὸς τὸν δοῦλον· Ἔξελθε εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς καὶ φραγμοὺς καὶ ἀνάγκασον εἰσελθεῖν, ἵνα γεμισθῇ ⸂μου ὁ οἶκος⸃·
Orthodox ReadingAnd the lord said to the servant: Go out into the roads and along the hedgesⓘ and compel them to come inⓘ, so that my house may be filled.

Greekλέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδεὶς τῶν ἀνδρῶν ἐκείνων τῶν κεκλημένων γεύσεταί μου τοῦ ⸀δείπνου.
Orthodox ReadingFor I tell you that none of those invited menⓘ will taste my dinner».
