GreekἮσαν δὲ ⸂αὐτῷ ἐγγίζοντες⸃ πάντες οἱ τελῶναι καὶ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ.
Orthodox ReadingAll the tax collectors and the am ha-aretz (the non-observant common folk, excluded from table-fellowship with the pure) were drawing near to him tax collectors and am ha-aretzⓘ to listen to him.

Greekκαὶ διεγόγγυζον οἵ ⸀τε Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες ὅτι Οὗτος ἁμαρτωλοὺς προσδέχεται καὶ συνεσθίει αὐτοῖς.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the Pharisees (perushim), the observant perushimⓘ, and the scribes (soferim), the learned in the Torah soferimⓘ, were grumbling: «This man welcomes sinners and sits at table with themⓘ».

Greekεἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγων·

GreekΤίς ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ὑμῶν ἔχων ἑκατὸν πρόβατα καὶ ⸀ἀπολέσας ⸂ἐξ αὐτῶν ἓν⸃ οὐ καταλείπει τὰ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ πορεύεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπολωλὸς ἕως εὕρῃ αὐτό;
Orthodox Reading«Which of you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wildernessⓘ and go after the lost one until he finds itⓘ?

Greekκαὶ εὑρὼν ἐπιτίθησιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὤμους ⸀αὐτοῦ χαίρων,
Orthodox ReadingAnd finding it, he lays it on his shoulders with joy,

Greekκαὶ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὸν οἶκον συγκαλεῖ τοὺς φίλους καὶ τοὺς γείτονας, λέγων αὐτοῖς· Συγχάρητέ μοι ὅτι εὗρον τὸ πρόβατόν μου τὸ ἀπολωλός.
Orthodox Readingand coming home he calls together his friends and neighbors: Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.

Greekλέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὕτως χαρὰ ⸂ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἔσται⸃ ἐπὶ ἑνὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι ἢ ἐπὶ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα δικαίοις οἵτινες οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν μετανοίας.
Orthodox ReadingI tell you that in the same way there will be joy in heaven over a single sinner who repentsⓘ, over a single sinner who performs teshuvah (the return to God), more than over ninety-nine righteousⓘ, the tzaddiqim (the righteous) who have no need of conversion.

GreekἪ τίς γυνὴ δραχμὰς ἔχουσα δέκα, ἐὰν ἀπολέσῃ δραχμὴν μίαν, οὐχὶ ἅπτει λύχνον καὶ σαροῖ τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ ζητεῖ ἐπιμελῶς ἕως ⸀οὗ εὕρῃ;
Orthodox ReadingOr what woman, if she loses one of her ten drachmasⓘ, does not light the lampⓘ and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

Greekκαὶ εὑροῦσα ⸀συγκαλεῖ τὰς φίλας ⸀καὶ γείτονας λέγουσα· Συγχάρητέ μοι ὅτι εὗρον τὴν δραχμὴν ἣν ἀπώλεσα.
Orthodox ReadingAnd finding it, she calls together her friends and neighbors: Rejoice with me, for I have found the lost drachma.

Greekοὕτως, λέγω ὑμῖν, ⸂γίνεται χαρὰ⸃ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ ἑνὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι.
Orthodox ReadingSo, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of Godⓘ over a single sinner who performs teshuvah.

Greekκαὶ εἶπεν ὁ νεώτερος αὐτῶν τῷ πατρί· Πάτερ, δός μοι τὸ ἐπιβάλλον μέρος τῆς οὐσίας· ⸂ὁ δὲ⸃ διεῖλεν αὐτοῖς τὸν βίον.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the younger said to the father: Father, give me the share of the estateⓘ that falls to me. And he divided the propertyⓘ between them.

Greekκαὶ μετ’ οὐ πολλὰς ἡμέρας συναγαγὼν ⸀πάντα ὁ νεώτερος υἱὸς ἀπεδήμησεν εἰς χώραν μακράν, καὶ ἐκεῖ διεσκόρπισεν τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτοῦ ζῶν ἀσώτως.
Orthodox ReadingAnd a few days later the younger son, having gathered everything, set off for a far country and there squandered the estate living dissolutelyⓘ, following the yetzer ha-ra (the inclination to evil).

Greekδαπανήσαντος δὲ αὐτοῦ πάντα ἐγένετο λιμὸς ⸀ἰσχυρὰ κατὰ τὴν χώραν ἐκείνην, καὶ αὐτὸς ἤρξατο ὑστερεῖσθαι.
Orthodox ReadingHaving spent everything, a great famine aroseⓘ in that country and he began to be in need.

Greekκαὶ πορευθεὶς ἐκολλήθη ἑνὶ τῶν πολιτῶν τῆς χώρας ἐκείνης, καὶ ἔπεμψεν αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς ἀγροὺς αὐτοῦ βόσκειν χοίρους·
Orthodox ReadingAnd he went and hired himself out to one of the inhabitants of that region, who sent him into the fields to feed the swineⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ἐπεθύμει ⸂γεμίσαι τὴν κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ⸃ τῶν κερατίων ὧν ἤσθιον οἱ χοῖροι, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδίδου αὐτῷ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he longed to fill himself with the carob pods that the swine were eating, and no one gave him any.

Greekεἰς ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἐλθὼν ⸀ἔφη· Πόσοι μίσθιοι τοῦ πατρός μου ⸀περισσεύονται ἄρτων, ἐγὼ δὲ ⸂λιμῷ ὧδε⸃ ἀπόλλυμαι·
Orthodox ReadingComing to himselfⓘ, the start of teshuvah, he said: How many hired servantsⓘ have bread in abundance, and here I am dying of hunger!

Greekἀναστὰς πορεύσομαι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ ἐρῶ αὐτῷ· Πάτερ, ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου,
Orthodox ReadingI will rise, go to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against Heavenⓘ and before you;

Greek⸀οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου· ποίησόν με ὡς ἕνα τῶν μισθίων σου.
Orthodox ReadingI am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.

Greekκαὶ ἀναστὰς ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα ⸀ἑαυτοῦ. ἔτι δὲ αὐτοῦ μακρὰν ἀπέχοντος εἶδεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη καὶ δραμὼν ἐπέπεσεν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he rose and returned to his father. While he was still far off, the father saw him, was moved with compassion and ran to meet himⓘ with chesed (the faithful covenant love), threw himself on his neck and kissed him.

Greekεἶπεν δὲ ⸂ὁ υἱὸς αὐτῷ⸃· Πάτερ, ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου, ⸀οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός ⸀σου.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the son said to him: Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you, I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

Greekεἶπεν δὲ ὁ πατὴρ πρὸς τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ· ⸀Ταχὺ ⸀ἐξενέγκατε στολὴν τὴν πρώτην καὶ ἐνδύσατε αὐτόν, καὶ δότε δακτύλιον εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑποδήματα εἰς τοὺς πόδας,
Orthodox ReadingBut the father said to the servants: Quickly, the finest robe, the ring on his finger, the sandals on his feetⓘ, restoring to him the kavod (the honor) of a son!

Greekκαὶ ⸀φέρετε τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, θύσατε, καὶ φαγόντες εὐφρανθῶμεν,
Orthodox ReadingAnd bring the fattened calfⓘ, slaughter it, let us eat and celebrate,

Greekὅτι οὗτος ὁ υἱός μου νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέζησεν, ⸂ἦν ἀπολωλὼς⸃ καὶ εὑρέθη. καὶ ἤρξαντο εὐφραίνεσθαι.
Orthodox Readingfor this son of mine was dead and has come back to life, was lost and has been foundⓘ: he had gone down into sheol (the realm of the dead) and has risen to the life of the olam ha-ba (the world to come). And they began to celebrate.

GreekἮν δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἐν ἀγρῷ· καὶ ὡς ἐρχόμενος ἤγγισεν τῇ οἰκίᾳ, ἤκουσεν συμφωνίας καὶ χορῶν,
Orthodox ReadingNow the elder sonⓘ was in the fields. And as he came near the house on his return, he heard music and dancingⓘ;

Greekκαὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ἕνα τῶν παίδων ἐπυνθάνετο τί ⸀ἂν εἴη ταῦτα·
Orthodox Readingand calling one of the servants he asked what all this was.

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἥκει, καὶ ἔθυσεν ὁ πατήρ σου τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, ὅτι ὑγιαίνοντα αὐτὸν ἀπέλαβεν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the latter said to him: Your brother has returned, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf, because he has him back safe and sound.

Greekὠργίσθη δὲ καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν εἰσελθεῖν. ὁ ⸀δὲ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐξελθὼν παρεκάλει αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingHe became angry and would not go in; and his father came out to plead with himⓘ.

Greekὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν τῷ πατρὶ ⸀αὐτοῦ· Ἰδοὺ τοσαῦτα ἔτη δουλεύω σοι καὶ οὐδέποτε ἐντολήν σου παρῆλθον, καὶ ἐμοὶ οὐδέποτε ἔδωκας ἔριφον ἵνα μετὰ τῶν φίλων μου εὐφρανθῶ·
Orthodox ReadingBut he answered, saying to the father: Look, I have served you for so many years and have never disobeyed one of your commandsⓘ, a single mitzvah of the mitzvot, and you have never given me a young goat to celebrate with my friends.

Greekὅτε δὲ ὁ υἱός σου οὗτος ὁ καταφαγών σου τὸν βίον ⸀μετὰ πορνῶν ἦλθεν, ἔθυσας αὐτῷ τὸν ⸂σιτευτὸν μόσχον⸃.
Orthodox ReadingBut now that this son of yours has returned, who has devoured your property with the prostitutesⓘ, you have slaughtered the fattened calf for him!

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Τέκνον, σὺ πάντοτε μετ’ ἐμοῦ εἶ, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐμὰ σά ἐστιν·
Orthodox ReadingAnd he said to him: Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yoursⓘ;

Greekεὐφρανθῆναι δὲ καὶ χαρῆναι ἔδει, ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου οὗτος νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ⸀ἔζησεν, καὶ ⸀ἀπολωλὼς καὶ εὑρέθη.
Orthodox Readingbut it was fitting to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has come back to life, was lost and has been foundⓘ».
