GreekΚαὶ παρατηρήσαντες ἀπέστειλαν ἐγκαθέτους ὑποκρινομένους ἑαυτοὺς δικαίους εἶναι, ἵνα ἐπιλάβωνται αὐτοῦ λόγου, ⸀ὥστε παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν τῇ ἀρχῇ καὶ τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ τοῦ ἡγεμόνος.
Orthodox ReadingAnd keeping watch on him, they sent informersⓘ who feigned to be righteous, pure observant ones (tzaddiqim)ⓘ, in order to catch him out in his speechⓘ and so hand him over to the authority and power of the governorⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες· Διδάσκαλε, οἴδαμεν ὅτι ὀρθῶς λέγεις καὶ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ λαμβάνεις πρόσωπον, ἀλλ’ ἐπ’ ἀληθείας τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ θεοῦ διδάσκεις·
Orthodox ReadingAnd they questioned him, saying: «Teacherⓘ, we know that you speak and teach with rectitude and show no partiality to anyoneⓘ, but teach according to truth the way of Godⓘ.

Greekἔξεστιν ⸀ἡμᾶς Καίσαρι φόρον δοῦναι ἢ οὔ;

Greekκατανοήσας δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πανουργίαν εἶπεν πρὸς ⸀αὐτούς·
Orthodox ReadingBut he, perceiving their cunningⓘ, said:

Greek⸀Δείξατέ μοι δηνάριον· τίνος ἔχει εἰκόνα καὶ ἐπιγραφήν; ⸀ἀποκριθέντες δὲ εἶπαν· Καίσαρος.
Orthodox Reading«Show me a denariusⓘ: whose image and inscriptionⓘ does it bear?». They answeredⓘ: «Caesar's».

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν ⸂πρὸς αὐτούς· Τοίνυν ἀπόδοτε⸃ τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τῷ θεῷ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he said to them: «Render thereforeⓘ to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God'sⓘ».

Greekκαὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσαν ἐπιλαβέσθαι ⸀τοῦ ῥήματος ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ θαυμάσαντες ἐπὶ τῇ ἀποκρίσει αὐτοῦ ἐσίγησαν.
