Καὶ παρατηρήσαντες ἀπέστειλαν ἐγκαθέτους ὑποκρινομένους ἑαυτοὺς δικαίους εἶναι, ἵνα ἐπιλάβωνται αὐτοῦ λόγου, ⸀ὥστε παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν τῇ ἀρχῇ καὶ τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ τοῦ ἡγεμόνος.

Si misero a spiarlo e mandarono informatori, che si fingessero giusti, per coglierlo in fallo nel parlare e poi consegnarlo all'autorità e al potere del governatore.

And keeping watch on him, they sent informersⓘ who feigned to be righteous, pure observant ones (tzaddiqim)ⓘ, in order to catch him out in his speechⓘ and so hand him over to the authority and power of the governorⓘ.

καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες· Διδάσκαλε, οἴδαμεν ὅτι ὀρθῶς λέγεις καὶ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ λαμβάνεις πρόσωπον, ἀλλ’ ἐπ’ ἀληθείας τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ θεοῦ διδάσκεις·

Costoro lo interrogarono: «Maestro, sappiamo che parli e insegni con rettitudine e non guardi in faccia a nessuno, ma insegni secondo verità la via di Dio.

And they questioned him, saying: «Teacherⓘ, we know that you speak and teach with rectitude and show no partiality to anyoneⓘ, but teach according to truth the way of Godⓘ.

ἔξεστιν ⸀ἡμᾶς Καίσαρι φόρον δοῦναι ἢ οὔ;

È lecito che noi paghiamo il tributo a Cesare o no?».

Is it lawfulⓘ for us to pay the tribute to Caesarⓘ or not?».

κατανοήσας δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πανουργίαν εἶπεν πρὸς ⸀αὐτούς·

Rendendosi conto della loro malizia, disse:

But he, perceiving their cunningⓘ, said:

⸀Δείξατέ μοι δηνάριον· τίνος ἔχει εἰκόνα καὶ ἐπιγραφήν; ⸀ἀποκριθέντες δὲ εἶπαν· Καίσαρος.

«Mostratemi un denaro: di chi porta l'immagine e l'iscrizione?». Risposero: «Di Cesare».

«Show me a denariusⓘ: whose image and inscriptionⓘ does it bear?». They answeredⓘ: «Caesar's».

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ⸂πρὸς αὐτούς· Τοίνυν ἀπόδοτε⸃ τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τῷ θεῷ.

Ed egli disse: «Rendete dunque a Cesare ciò che è di Cesare e a Dio ciò che è di Dio».

And he said to them: «Render thereforeⓘ to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God'sⓘ».

καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσαν ἐπιλαβέσθαι ⸀τοῦ ῥήματος ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ θαυμάσαντες ἐπὶ τῇ ἀποκρίσει αὐτοῦ ἐσίγησαν.

Così non poterono coglierlo in fallo davanti al popolo e, meravigliati della sua risposta, tacquero.

And they were unable to catch him out before the peopleⓘ, and marveling at his answer they fell silentⓘ.
