GreekΚαὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἐθεάσατο τελώνην ὀνόματι Λευὶν καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἀκολούθει μοι.
Orthodox ReadingAnd after these things he went out and noticed a tax collector (telōnēsⓘ) named Levi, sitting at the tax boothⓘ, and he said to him: «Follow meⓘ!».

Greekκαὶ καταλιπὼν ⸀πάντα ἀναστὰς ⸀ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he, leaving everything, rose and began to follow him.

GreekΚαὶ ἐποίησεν δοχὴν μεγάλην Λευὶς αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἦν ὄχλος ⸂πολὺς τελωνῶν⸃ καὶ ἄλλων οἳ ἦσαν μετ’ αὐτῶν κατακείμενοι.
Orthodox ReadingAnd Levi prepared a great banquetⓘ in his house; and there was a great crowd of am ha-aretz (the common folk not in a state of purity, because they neglect the tevilah, the ritual immersion) and tax collectors who were reclining at table with them.

Greekκαὶ ἐγόγγυζον οἱ ⸂Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν⸃ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· Διὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίετε καὶ πίνετε;
Orthodox ReadingAnd the Pharisees (perushim), pure observants of the confraternity (haverim), and their scribes (soferim), experts of the Torah, murmuredⓘ against his disciplesⓘ, saying: «Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinnersⓘ?».

Greekκαὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ὑγιαίνοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλὰ οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες·
Orthodox ReadingAnd Jesus, answering, said to them: «It is not the healthy who need the physician, but those who are ill;

Greekοὐκ ἐλήλυθα καλέσαι δικαίους ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτωλοὺς εἰς μετάνοιαν.
Orthodox ReadingI have not come to call the righteous (tzaddiqimⓘ), but sinners to conversionⓘ».

GreekΟἱ δὲ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν· ⸀Οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου νηστεύουσιν πυκνὰ καὶ δεήσεις ποιοῦνται, ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων, οἱ δὲ σοὶ ἐσθίουσιν καὶ πίνουσιν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd they said to him: «The disciplesⓘ of John often practice voluntary fasting (ta'anitⓘ) and offer supplicationsⓘ, and so too those of the Pharisees (perushim); but yours eat and drink!».

Greekὁ ⸀δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Μὴ δύνασθε τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ νυμφῶνος ἐν ᾧ ὁ νυμφίος μετ’ αὐτῶν ἐστιν ποιῆσαι ⸀νηστεῦσαι;
Orthodox ReadingAnd Jesus said to them: «Can you make the sons of the bridal hallⓘ fast while the bridegroomⓘ is with them?

Greekἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι, καὶ ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος τότε νηστεύσουσιν ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις.
Orthodox ReadingBut days will come when the bridegroom will be torn away from themⓘ; then, in those days, they will fast».

Greekἔλεγεν δὲ καὶ παραβολὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι Οὐδεὶς ἐπίβλημα ⸀ἀπὸ ἱματίου καινοῦ ⸀σχίσας ἐπιβάλλει ἐπὶ ἱμάτιον παλαιόν· εἰ δὲ μήγε, καὶ τὸ καινὸν ⸀σχίσει καὶ τῷ παλαιῷ οὐ ⸂συμφωνήσει τὸ ἐπίβλημα⸃ τὸ ἀπὸ τοῦ καινοῦ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he also told them a parableⓘ: «No one, having torn it out, puts a patch from a new garmentⓘ onto an old garment; otherwise he will tear the new, and to the old the patch taken from the new will not match.

Greekκαὶ οὐδεὶς βάλλει οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς· εἰ δὲ μήγε, ῥήξει ὁ ⸂οἶνος ὁ νέος⸃ τοὺς ἀσκούς, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐκχυθήσεται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπολοῦνται·
Orthodox ReadingAnd no one pours new wine into old wineskinsⓘ; otherwise the wine, the new one, will burst the wineskinsⓘ, and it itself will spill out and the wineskins will be lost.

Greekἀλλὰ οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς καινοὺς ⸀βλητέον.
Orthodox ReadingBut new wineⓘ must be poured into new wineskins.

Greek⸀καὶ οὐδεὶς πιὼν ⸀παλαιὸν θέλει νέον· λέγει γάρ· Ὁ παλαιὸς ⸀χρηστός ἐστιν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd no one, after drinking the old, wants the new; for he says: The old is goodⓘ!».
