Greek⸂Ἐγένετο δὲ⸃ ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐνέβη εἰς πλοῖον καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πέραν τῆς λίμνης, καὶ ἀνήχθησαν.
Orthodox ReadingIt happened on one of those days that he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them: «Let us cross to the other side of the lakeⓘ», and they put out.

Greekπλεόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀφύπνωσεν. καὶ κατέβη λαῖλαψ ἀνέμου εἰς τὴν λίμνην, καὶ συνεπληροῦντο καὶ ἐκινδύνευον.
Orthodox ReadingAs they sailed, he fell asleepⓘ. And a squall of wind came down on the lakeⓘ, and they were filling with water and were in danger.

Greekπροσελθόντες δὲ διήγειραν αὐτὸν λέγοντες· Ἐπιστάτα ἐπιστάτα, ἀπολλύμεθα· ὁ δὲ ⸀διεγερθεὶς ἐπετίμησεν τῷ ἀνέμῳ καὶ τῷ κλύδωνι τοῦ ὕδατος, καὶ ἐπαύσαντο, καὶ ἐγένετο γαλήνη.
Orthodox ReadingComing to him, they woke him saying: «Master, master, we are perishingⓘ!». He, having awoken, rebuked the wind and the surging of the waterⓘ, and they ceased, and there was a calmⓘ.

Greekεἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς· ⸀Ποῦ ἡ πίστις ὑμῶν; φοβηθέντες δὲ ἐθαύμασαν, λέγοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Τίς ἄρα οὗτός ἐστιν ὅτι καὶ τοῖς ἀνέμοις ἐπιτάσσει καὶ τῷ ὕδατι, καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ;
Orthodox ReadingAnd he said to them: «Where is your faithⓘ?». Frightened, they marveled, saying to one another: «Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey himⓘ?».

GreekΚαὶ κατέπλευσαν εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν ⸀Γερασηνῶν, ἥτις ἐστὶν ἀντιπέρα τῆς Γαλιλαίας.
Orthodox ReadingAnd they put in at the region of the Gerasenesⓘ, which is opposite Galilee.

Orthodox ReadingWhen he had gone ashore, there met him a man of the city possessed by demonsⓘ; for a long time he had worn no garment and lived not in a house but among the tombs, a place of corpse impurity (tumat met)ⓘ.

Greekἰδὼν δὲ τὸν ⸀Ἰησοῦν ἀνακράξας προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ εἶπεν· Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου; δέομαί σου, μή με βασανίσῃς·
Orthodox ReadingSeeing Jesus, crying out he fell at his feet and with a loud voice said: «What is there between me and you, Jesus Son of the Most High Godⓘ? I beg you, do not torment me!».

Greekἐπηρώτησεν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ ⸀Ἰησοῦς· Τί σοι ⸂ὄνομά ἐστιν⸃; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Λεγιών, ὅτι ⸂εἰσῆλθεν δαιμόνια πολλὰ⸃ εἰς αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingJesus asked him: «What is your name?». He said: «Legionⓘ», because many demons had entered into him.

GreekἮν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἀγέλη χοίρων ἱκανῶν ⸀βοσκομένη ἐν τῷ ὄρει· καὶ ⸀παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιτρέψῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς ἐκείνους εἰσελθεῖν· καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς.
Orthodox ReadingThere was there a herd of swine, unclean animalsⓘ, numerous, feeding on the mountain; and they begged him to permit them to enter into those; and he permitted them.

Greekἐξελθόντα δὲ τὰ δαιμόνια ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, καὶ ὥρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ ἀπεπνίγη.
Orthodox ReadingThe demons, coming out of the man, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the cliff into the lakeⓘ and drowned.

Orthodox ReadingThey went out to see and found the man sitting, clothed and sound of mindⓘ at the feet of Jesus, and they were afraid.

Greekκαὶ ⸀ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν ⸀Γερασηνῶν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπ’ αὐτῶν, ὅτι φόβῳ μεγάλῳ συνείχοντο· αὐτὸς δὲ ἐμβὰς ⸀εἰς πλοῖον ὑπέστρεψεν.
Orthodox ReadingThe whole multitude of the region of the Gerasenes begged him to depart, because they were seized with great fear; and he, having got into the boat, returned.

GreekὙπόστρεφε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου, καὶ διηγοῦ ὅσα ⸂σοι ἐποίησεν⸃ ὁ θεός. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καθ’ ὅλην τὴν πόλιν κηρύσσων ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς.
Orthodox Reading«Return to your house and recount how much God has done for youⓘ». And he went away proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Orthodox Readingbecause he had an only daughter about twelve years old who was dying. As he went, the crowds pressed in on him.

Orthodox Readinghaving approached from behind touched the fringe of the mitzvot (tzitzit of the tallit)ⓘ, and immediately the flow of her blood ceased, restoring to her ritual purity (taharah).

Orthodox ReadingAnd Jesus said: «Who touched me?». When all denied it, Peter said: «Master, the crowds press and crush in on you».

Orthodox ReadingWhile he was still speaking, there comes one from the house of the head of the synagogue (archisynágōgos)ⓘ saying: «Your daughter is dead, do not trouble the master (rav)ⓘ any further».

Greekὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀκούσας ἀπεκρίθη ⸀αὐτῷ· Μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον ⸀πίστευσον, καὶ σωθήσεται.
Orthodox ReadingBut Jesus, having heard, answered him: «Do not fear, only believeⓘ, and she will be saved».

Orthodox ReadingAll were weeping and beating themselves for her in the funeral lament (qinah/hesped, the mourning rites). But he said: «Do not weep, she is not dead but sleepsⓘ».

Orthodox ReadingBut he, having taken the hand of the dead girl (tumat met)ⓘ, cried out saying: «Child, ariseⓘ!».

Greekκαὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνέστη παραχρῆμα, καὶ διέταξεν αὐτῇ δοθῆναι φαγεῖν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd her spirit returnedⓘ, and she arose at once; and he ordered that something be given her to eat.
