Orthodox ReadingComing to the disciples, they saw around them a great crowd of am ha-aretz (the common people not bound to the rigor of the haverim) looking onⓘ and the scribes (soferim) who were disputing with them in a public halakhic controversy, a machloketⓘ.

Greekἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐπισυντρέχει ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ λέγων αὐτῷ· Τὸ ⸂ἄλαλον καὶ κωφὸν πνεῦμα⸃, ἐγὼ ⸂ἐπιτάσσω σοι⸃, ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ μηκέτι εἰσέλθῃς εἰς αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingSeeing that a crowd was running together, Jesus rebukedⓘ the spirit of impurity (ruach ha-tumah), the power that induces tum'ah on the halakhic planeⓘ, saying to it: «Mute and deaf spirit — the deaf-mute (cheresh)ⓘ, I command youⓘ, come out of him and enter him no more».

Greekκαὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Τοῦτο τὸ γένος ἐν οὐδενὶ δύναται ἐξελθεῖν εἰ μὴ ἐν ⸀προσευχῇ.
