Greek⸀Ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐξελθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ⸀τῆς οἰκίας ἐκάθητο παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν·

Greekκαὶ συνήχθησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὄχλοι πολλοί, ὥστε αὐτὸν ⸀εἰς πλοῖον ἐμβάντα καθῆσθαι, καὶ πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος ἐπὶ τὸν αἰγιαλὸν εἱστήκει.
Orthodox ReadingA great crowdⓘ gathered around him, so that he got into a boat and sat down, while the whole crowd stood on the shore.

Greekκαὶ ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς πολλὰ ἐν παραβολαῖς λέγων· Ἰδοὺ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ σπείρων τοῦ σπείρειν.

GreekΚαὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Διὰ τί ἐν παραβολαῖς λαλεῖς αὐτοῖς;
Orthodox ReadingThe disciplesⓘ approached him and said to him: «Why do you speak to them in parables?».

Greekὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς· Ὅτι ὑμῖν δέδοται γνῶναι τὰ μυστήρια τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐρανῶν, ἐκείνοις δὲ οὐ δέδοται.
Orthodox ReadingHe answered: «Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven (Malkhut Shamayim)ⓘ, but to them it is not given.

Greekὅστις γὰρ ἔχει, δοθήσεται αὐτῷ καὶ περισσευθήσεται· ὅστις δὲ οὐκ ἔχει, καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ.

Greekδιὰ τοῦτο ἐν παραβολαῖς αὐτοῖς λαλῶ, ὅτι βλέποντες οὐ βλέπουσιν καὶ ἀκούοντες οὐκ ἀκούουσιν οὐδὲ συνίουσιν·

Greekἐπαχύνθη γὰρ ἡ καρδία τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου, καὶ τοῖς ὠσὶν βαρέως ἤκουσαν, καὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν ἐκάμμυσαν· μήποτε ἴδωσιν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ τοῖς ὠσὶν ἀκούσωσιν καὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ συνῶσιν καὶ ἐπιστρέψωσιν, καὶ ἰάσομαι αὐτούς.
Orthodox ReadingFor the heart of this people has grown dullⓘ, they have become hard of hearing and have shut their eyes: so that with them they do not see, with their earsⓘ they do not hear, with the heart they do not understand, and they do not perform the teshuvah (the return to God) teshuvahⓘ, so that I might healⓘ them.

Greekὑμῶν δὲ μακάριοι οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ὅτι βλέπουσιν, καὶ τὰ ὦτα ὑμῶν ὅτι ⸀ἀκούουσιν.
Orthodox ReadingBlessedⓘ instead are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they listen.

Greekἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοὶ προφῆται καὶ δίκαιοι ἐπεθύμησαν ἰδεῖν ἃ βλέπετε καὶ οὐκ εἶδαν, καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ἃ ἀκούετε καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν.
Orthodox ReadingTruly I say to youⓘ: many prophets and righteous ones (the tzaddiqim) prophets and righteous onesⓘ longed to see what you behold, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.

Greekπαντὸς ἀκούοντος τὸν λόγον τῆς βασιλείας καὶ μὴ συνιέντος, ἔρχεται ὁ πονηρὸς καὶ ἁρπάζει τὸ ἐσπαρμένον ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ παρὰ τὴν ὁδὸν σπαρείς.
Orthodox ReadingWhenever someone hears the word of the Kingdomⓘ and does not understand it, the Evil Oneⓘ comes and snatches awayⓘ what was sown in their heart: this is the seed that fell along the path.

Greekοὐκ ἔχει δὲ ῥίζαν ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἀλλὰ πρόσκαιρός ἐστιν, γενομένης δὲ θλίψεως ἢ διωγμοῦ διὰ τὸν λόγον εὐθὺς σκανδαλίζεται.
Orthodox Readingbut has no roots in themselves and is inconstantⓘ: as soon as tribulation or persecutionⓘ comes on account of the word, they immediately stumbleⓘ.

Greekὁ δὲ εἰς τὰς ἀκάνθας σπαρείς, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τὸν λόγον ἀκούων, καὶ ἡ μέριμνα τοῦ αἰῶνος ⸀τούτου καὶ ἡ ἀπάτη τοῦ πλούτου συμπνίγει τὸν λόγον, καὶ ἄκαρπος γίνεται.
Orthodox ReadingWhat was sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, but the anxiety of the worldⓘ and the seduction of richesⓘ choke the word and it remains without fruit.
