GreekΤότε προσέρχονται τῷ ⸀Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων ⸂Φαρισαῖοι καὶ γραμματεῖς⸃ λέγοντες
Orthodox ReadingThen there approached Jesus the Pharisees (perushim), the pure observants (haverim) perushim / haverimⓘ, and the scribes (soferim) soferimⓘ come from Jerusalem, saying:

GreekΔιὰ τί οἱ μαθηταί σου παραβαίνουσιν τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων; οὐ γὰρ νίπτονται τὰς χεῖρας ⸀αὐτῶν ὅταν ἄρτον ἐσθίωσιν.
Orthodox Reading«Why do your disciples disciplesⓘ transgress the tradition of the ancients (zeqenim) zeqenimⓘ? They do not wash their handsⓘ when they eat bread».

Greekὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν;
Orthodox ReadingHe answered, saying to them: «And why do you transgress the command of Godⓘ for the sake of your tradition?

Greekὁ γὰρ θεὸς ⸀εἶπεν· Τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα, καί· Ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω·
Orthodox ReadingFor God said: Honor the father and the motherⓘ, and: whoever curses father or mother let him be put to deathⓘ.

Greekὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε· Ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί· Δῶρον ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς,

Greek⸀οὐ μὴ ⸀τιμήσει τὸν πατέρα ⸀αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἠκυρώσατε ⸂τὸν λόγον⸃ τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν.

Greekμάτην δὲ σέβονταί με, διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων.

GreekΚαὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ἀκούετε καὶ συνίετε·

Greekοὐ τὸ εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἀλλὰ τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦτο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
Orthodox Readingnot what enters the mouth defilesⓘ the man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles the man».

GreekΤότε προσελθόντες οἱ ⸀μαθηταὶ ⸀λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν;

Greekὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· Πᾶσα φυτεία ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ οὐράνιος ἐκριζωθήσεται.
Orthodox ReadingHe answered, saying: «Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprootedⓘ.

Greekἄφετε αὐτούς· ⸂τυφλοί εἰσιν ὁδηγοὶ τυφλῶν⸃· τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ, ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται.
Orthodox ReadingLeave them: they are blind, guides of the blindⓘ; and if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into the pit».

GreekἈποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολὴν ⸀ταύτην.

Greekὁ ⸀δὲ εἶπεν· Ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε;

Greek⸀οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται;
Orthodox ReadingDo you not comprehend that all that enters the mouth goes into the belly and is cast out into the sewerⓘ?

Greekτὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται, κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
Orthodox ReadingBut the things that come out of the mouth come from the heartⓘ, and these defile the man.

Greekἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί, φόνοι, μοιχεῖαι, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, ψευδομαρτυρίαι, βλασφημίαι.
Orthodox ReadingFor it is from there that come evil designs, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemiesⓘ.

Greekταῦτά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον, τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶν φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
