Orthodox ReadingWoe to youⓘ, scribes (soferim)ⓘ and Pharisees (perushim)ⓘ, play-actorsⓘ — the observant and learned class that guards the oral Torah —, you who shut the Kingdom of Heaven (Malkhut Shamayim, the sovereignty of Heavenⓘ) in people's faces: you yourselves do not enter, nor do you let in those who would.
15
Orthodox ReadingWoe to you, who travel sea and land to make one proselyte (ger, the convert who enters the covenantⓘ) and, once he has become one, you make him a child of Gehenna (ben gehinnom, destined for the judgment of the Ge-Hinnom) twice as much as yourselves.
161
Orthodox ReadingWoe to you, blind guidesⓘ, who quibble over oaths (shevuot) sworn by the Temple (the Beit ha-Miqdash) or by its gold, by the altar (the mizbeaḥ) or by the offering placed upon itⓘ.
2312
Orthodox ReadingWoe to you, who pay the tithe (maaser) of mint, dill and cumin — a scrupulous levy even on the smallest herbs, a praiseworthy and uncondemned practice —, yet neglect the weightier matters of the Torahⓘ: justice, mercy and faithfulness (mishpat, ḥesed and emunah)ⓘ; these you ought to have done without neglecting the othersⓘ.
24
Orthodox ReadingBlind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camelⓘ!
253
Orthodox ReadingWoe to you, who tend to the ritual purity (tohorah) of the vessels — the debate between the house of Hillel (bet Hillel) and the house of Shammai (bet Shammai) on the inside/outside relation of the receptacle — only on the outsideⓘ of the cup and the dish, while inside you are full of plunder and intemperanceⓘ.
2742
Orthodox ReadingWoe to you, tombs whitewashed white before Pesach to signal to the pilgrims their impurity from contact with the dead (the tum'at met) whitewashed tombsⓘ:
29

Orthodox ReadingWoe to you, who build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the sepulchres of the righteousⓘ
30
Orthodox Readingand say: «If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been their accomplices in the blood of the prophets».
31

3442
Orthodox ReadingTherefore behold, I send to you as shaliach (the envoy invested with the authority of the one who sends him) prophets, sages and scribesⓘ, the soferim — Jewish messengers in the line of Israel's prophets, not strangers to the people —: some of these you will kill and crucifyⓘ, others you will flog in your synagoguesⓘ and persecute from town to town.
353
