GreekὉ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ⸀ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος· καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ὁ ἡγεμὼν λέγων· Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ⸀ἔφη· Σὺ λέγεις.
Orthodox ReadingMeanwhile Jesus was brought before the Roman prefect (hēgemṓn) Pilateⓘ, and the prefect questioned him, saying: «Are you the king of the Jewsⓘ?». And Jesus said: «You say soⓘ».

Greekκαὶ ἐν τῷ κατηγορεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων ⸀καὶ πρεσβυτέρων οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο.
Orthodox ReadingAnd while the kohanim of the temple leadership (archiereîs) and the elders (zeqenim, presbýteroi) kohanim and eldersⓘ were accusing him, he answered nothingⓘ.

Orthodox ReadingAt every feast of Pesach, the Jewish Passover Pesachⓘ, the prefect was accustomed to release, for the crowd of commoners come up to the feast (am ha-aretz) am ha-aretzⓘ, one prisoner, of their choosing.

Orthodox ReadingPilate asked them: «And what shall I do with Jesus, called Messiah?». They all answered: «Let him be crucifiedⓘ!».

Orthodox ReadingAnd he said: «But what evil has he done?». They, however, shouted louder: «Let him be crucified!».

Greekἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Πιλᾶτος ὅτι οὐδὲν ὠφελεῖ ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον θόρυβος γίνεται λαβὼν ὕδωρ ἀπενίψατο τὰς χεῖρας ⸀ἀπέναντι τοῦ ὄχλου λέγων· Ἀθῷός εἰμι ἀπὸ τοῦ ⸀αἵματος τούτου· ὑμεῖς ὄψεσθε.
Orthodox ReadingPilate, seeing that he was gaining nothing, but rather that the uproar was growing, took water and washed his handsⓘ before the crowd, saying: «I am innocent of this man's bloodⓘ: see to it yourselvesⓘ!».
