Orthodox ReadingThe disciples of Johnⓘ approached: «Why do we and the Pharisees (perushim), the observant onesⓘ frequently practice voluntary fasts (taʿanit), supererogatory abstinences beyond the single fast commanded by the Torah, that of Yom Kippurⓘ, while your disciplesⓘ do not?».

Greekκαὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος πενθεῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον μετ’ αὐτῶν ἐστιν ὁ νυμφίος; ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος, καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν.
Orthodox ReadingJesus said: «Can the shoshvinin, the companions of the bridal chamber (bnei ha-chuppah)ⓘ be in mourningⓘ as long as the bridegroomⓘ is with them? Days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from themⓘ, and then they will fastⓘ.

Greekοὐδεὶς δὲ ἐπιβάλλει ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπὶ ἱματίῳ παλαιῷ· αἴρει γὰρ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἱματίου, καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται.

Greekοὐδὲ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς· εἰ δὲ μή γε, ῥήγνυνται οἱ ἀσκοί, καὶ ὁ οἶνος ἐκχεῖται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ⸀ἀπόλλυνται· ἀλλὰ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς καινούς, καὶ ἀμφότεροι συντηροῦνται.
