Orthodox ReadingAnd the soldiersⓘ, having woven a crown of thornsⓘ, placed it on his head, and put on him a purple robeⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ⸂ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ⸃ ἔλεγον· Χαῖρε, ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων· καὶ ἐδίδοσαν αὐτῷ ῥαπίσματα.

Greek⸂καὶ ἐξῆλθεν⸃ πάλιν ἔξω ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ἴδε ἄγω ὑμῖν αὐτὸν ἔξω, ἵνα γνῶτε ὅτι ⸂οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ⸃.
Orthodox ReadingPilate went out again and says to them: «Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in himⓘ».

Orthodox ReadingThen Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And he says to them: «Behold the manⓘ!».

Greekὅτε οὖν εἶδον αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες· Σταύρωσον ⸀σταύρωσον. λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς καὶ σταυρώσατε, ἐγὼ γὰρ οὐχ εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν.
Orthodox ReadingWhen the archiereis, kohanim of the temple leadershipⓘ and their Temple guards (hypēretai)ⓘ saw him, they shouted saying: «Crucify him, crucify himⓘ!». Pilate says to them: «Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no fault in himⓘ».

Greekἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Ἡμεῖς νόμον ἔχομεν, καὶ κατὰ τὸν ⸀νόμον ὀφείλει ἀποθανεῖν, ὅτι ⸂υἱὸν θεοῦ ἑαυτὸν⸃ ἐποίησεν.
Orthodox ReadingThe Judeansⓘ answered him: «We have a Torahⓘ, and according to the Torah he must die because he made himself the Son of Godⓘ».

Greekκαὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ· Πόθεν εἶ σύ; ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀπόκρισιν οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ.
Orthodox ReadingHe entered again into the praetoriumⓘ and says to Jesus: «Where are you fromⓘ?». But Jesus gave him no answerⓘ.

Greekλέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Ἐμοὶ οὐ λαλεῖς; οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχω ⸂ἀπολῦσαί σε καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω σταυρῶσαί⸃ σε;
Orthodox ReadingPilate then says to him: «You do not speak to me? Do you not know that I have powerⓘ to release you and power to crucify you?».

Greekἀπεκρίθη ⸀αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Οὐκ εἶχες ἐξουσίαν ⸂κατ’ ἐμοῦ οὐδεμίαν⸃ εἰ μὴ ἦν ⸂δεδομένον σοι⸃ ἄνωθεν· διὰ τοῦτο ὁ ⸀παραδούς μέ σοι μείζονα ἁμαρτίαν ἔχει.
Orthodox ReadingJesus answered him: «You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from aboveⓘ. For this reason the one who handed me over to youⓘ has a greater sinⓘ».

Greekἐκ τούτου ⸂ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐζήτει⸃ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτόν· οἱ δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι ⸀ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες· Ἐὰν τοῦτον ἀπολύσῃς, οὐκ εἶ φίλος τοῦ Καίσαρος· πᾶς ὁ βασιλέα ἑαυτὸν ποιῶν ἀντιλέγει τῷ Καίσαρι.
Orthodox ReadingFrom that moment Pilate kept seekingⓘ to release him. But the Judeans shouted saying: «If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesarⓘ! Whoever makes himself a king sets himself against Caesarⓘ».

GreekὉ οὖν Πιλᾶτος ἀκούσας ⸂τῶν λόγων τούτων⸃ ἤγαγεν ἔξω τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ⸀ἐπὶ βήματος εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Λιθόστρωτον, Ἑβραϊστὶ δὲ Γαββαθα.
Orthodox ReadingHaving heard these words Pilate led Jesus out and sat down on the tribunalⓘ at the place called Lithostrotos, in Hebrew Gabbathaⓘ.
