Μετὰ ταῦτα ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν γῆν, καὶ ἐκεῖ διέτριβεν μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐβάπτιζεν.
Dopo questi fatti, Gesù andò con i suoi discepoli nella regione della Giudea, e là si tratteneva con loro e battezzava.
After these things, Jesus went with his talmidimⓘ into the region of Judeaⓘ, and there he stayed with them and performed the tevilah (the ritual immersion) tevilahⓘ.

ἦν δὲ καὶ ⸀ὁ Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων ἐν Αἰνὼν ἐγγὺς τοῦ Σαλείμ, ὅτι ὕδατα πολλὰ ἦν ἐκεῖ, καὶ παρεγίνοντο καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο·
Anche Giovanni battezzava a Ennòn, vicino a Salìm, perché là c'era molta acqua; e la gente andava a farsi battezzare.
Johnⓘ too was immersing at Aenon near Salimⓘ, because there were many watersⓘ, and people came and were immersed.

οὔπω γὰρ ἦν βεβλημένος εἰς τὴν φυλακὴν ⸀ὁ Ἰωάννης.
Giovanni, infatti, non era ancora stato gettato in prigione.
For John had not yet been thrown into prisonⓘ.

Ἐγένετο οὖν ζήτησις ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου μετὰ Ἰουδαίου περὶ καθαρισμοῦ.
Nacque allora una discussione tra i discepoli di Giovanni e un Giudeo riguardo alla purificazione rituale.
There then arose a dispute between John's disciples and an observant Jew (Yehudi) Yehudiⓘ concerning ritual purification (tahorah) tahorahⓘ.

καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Ῥαββί, ὃς ἦν μετὰ σοῦ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, ᾧ σὺ μεμαρτύρηκας, ἴδε οὗτος βαπτίζει καὶ πάντες ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτόν.
Andarono da Giovanni e gli dissero: «Rabbì, colui che era con te dall'altra parte del Giordano e al quale hai dato testimonianza, ecco, sta battezzando e tutti accorrono a lui».
And they came to John and said to him: «Rabbiⓘ, the one who was with you beyond the Jordanⓘ and to whom you bore witnessⓘ, behold, this man immerses and everyone is coming to himⓘ».

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰωάννης καὶ εἶπεν· Οὐ δύναται ἄνθρωπος λαμβάνειν ⸂οὐδὲ ἓν⸃ ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ δεδομένον αὐτῷ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.
Giovanni rispose: «Nessuno può prendere qualcosa se non gli è stato dato dal cielo.
John answered and said: «A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heavenⓘ.

αὐτοὶ ὑμεῖς ⸀μοι μαρτυρεῖτε ὅτι ⸀εἶπον· Οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὁ χριστός, ἀλλ’ ὅτι Ἀπεσταλμένος εἰμὶ ἔμπροσθεν ἐκείνου.
Voi stessi mi siete testimoni che ho detto: Non sono io il Cristo, ma sono stato mandato avanti a lui.
You yourselves are my witnesses that I said: I am not the Messiahⓘ, but I am sent ahead of himⓘ.

ὁ ἔχων τὴν νύμφην νυμφίος ἐστίν· ὁ δὲ φίλος τοῦ νυμφίου ὁ ἑστηκὼς καὶ ἀκούων αὐτοῦ, χαρᾷ χαίρει διὰ τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ νυμφίου. αὕτη οὖν ἡ χαρὰ ἡ ἐμὴ πεπλήρωται.
Lo sposo è colui al quale appartiene la sposa; ma l'amico dello sposo, che è presente e l'ascolta, esulta di gioia alla voce dello sposo. Ora questa mia gioia è piena.
He who has the brideⓘ is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroomⓘ, who stands and listens to him, rejoices with joy at the voice of the bridegroomⓘ. This joy of mine, then, is fullⓘ.

ἐκεῖνον δεῖ αὐξάνειν, ἐμὲ δὲ ἐλαττοῦσθαι.
Lui deve crescere; io, invece, diminuire».
He must increase, but I must decreaseⓘ».
31
Ὁ ἄνωθεν ἐρχόμενος ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν. ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐστιν καὶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς λαλεῖ· ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐρχόμενος ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν·
Chi viene dall'alto è al di sopra di tutti; chi viene dalla terra, appartiene alla terra e parla secondo la terra. Chi viene dal cielo è al di sopra di tutti.
He who comes from aboveⓘ is above all; he who is from the earth is from the earth and ek tês gês laleîⓘ. He who comes from heaven is above all.

⸀ὃ ἑώρακεν καὶ ἤκουσεν τοῦτο μαρτυρεῖ, καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν αὐτοῦ οὐδεὶς λαμβάνει.
Egli attesta ciò che ha visto e udito, eppure nessuno accetta la sua testimonianza.
What he has seen and heardⓘ, this he testifies, and no one accepts his testimonyⓘ.

ὁ λαβὼν αὐτοῦ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ἐσφράγισεν ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἀληθής ἐστιν.
Chi ne accetta la testimonianza, conferma che Dio è veritiero.
He who has accepted his testimony has set his sealⓘ that God is truthfulⓘ.

ὃν γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ θεοῦ λαλεῖ, οὐ γὰρ ἐκ μέτρου ⸀δίδωσιν τὸ πνεῦμα.
Colui infatti che Dio ha mandato dice le parole di Dio: senza misura egli dà lo Spirito.
He whom God has sentⓘ speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit by measureⓘ.

ὁ πατὴρ ἀγαπᾷ τὸν υἱόν, καὶ πάντα δέδωκεν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ.
Il Padre ama il Figlio e gli ha dato in mano ogni cosa.
The Father loves the Sonⓘ, and he has given all things into his handⓘ.

ὁ πιστεύων εἰς τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον· ὁ δὲ ἀπειθῶν τῷ υἱῷ οὐκ ὄψεται ζωήν, ἀλλ’ ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ μένει ἐπ’ αὐτόν.
Chi crede nel Figlio ha la vita eterna; chi non obbedisce al Figlio non vedrà la vita, ma l'ira di Dio rimane su di lui.
He who trusts in the Sonⓘ has eternal life; but he who refuses-disobeys the Sonⓘ shall not see life, but the orgḕ of God remains upon himⓘ».
