1
Orthodox ReadingAfter these events, there occurred one of the pilgrimage feasts (regalim) prescribed by the Torahⓘ and Jesus went up to Jerusalem in ʿaliyah, the going up to the Templeⓘ.
2
Orthodox ReadingIn Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gateⓘ, there is a poolⓘ, called in Hebrew Bethzathaⓘ, having five porticoes,
3
Orthodox Readingunder which lay a multitude of the sick, the blind, the lame, the paralyzedⓘ.
5
Orthodox ReadingThere was there a man who for thirty-eight yearsⓘ had been in his infirmity.
6
Greekτοῦτον ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς κατακείμενον, καὶ γνοὺς ὅτι πολὺν ἤδη χρόνον ἔχει, λέγει αὐτῷ· Θέλεις ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι;
Orthodox ReadingJesusⓘ, having seen him lying there and knowing that he had already been there a long time, says to him: «Do you want to become wellⓘ?».
7
Orthodox ReadingThe sick man answered him: «Lord, I have no manⓘ, for when the water is stirred someone casts me into the pool; while I am coming, another goes down before me».
8
Orthodox ReadingJesus says to him: «Rise, take up your mat and walkⓘ».
9
Orthodox ReadingAnd immediately the man became well, took up his mat and was walking. It was Shabbatⓘ on that day.
101
Orthodox ReadingThe Judeansⓘ therefore said, here the kohanim of the Temple leadershipⓘ, custodians of observance in the Temple area, to the man who had been healed: «It is Shabbat and it is not lawful for you to carry the mat: transporting it from one domain to another is hotzaʾah, the transfer between private and public domainⓘ, the last of the thirty-nine melakhotⓘ, the works forbidden on the seventh day».
11
Orthodox ReadingHe answered them: «He who made me well, that one said to me: «Take up your mat and walk»».
12
Greekἠρώτησαν ⸀οὖν αὐτόν· Τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ εἰπών σοι· ⸀Ἆρον καὶ περιπάτει;
Orthodox ReadingThey asked him: «Who is the man who said to you: «Take up and walk»?».
13
Orthodox ReadingBut the healed man did not know who it was: Jesus had slipped awayⓘ because in that place there was a great crowd of am ha-aretz, the mass of common, non-observant pilgrimsⓘ, the class distinct from the ḥaverim, the brotherhood of the rigorously observantⓘ.
14
Orthodox ReadingAfter these events, Jesus finds him in the Templeⓘ, readmitted to the purity (taharah) required for access to the sacred area, and said to him: «Behold, you have become well: sin no more, lest something worse happen to youⓘ».
15
Orthodox ReadingThe man went off and announced to the Judeans that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16
Orthodox ReadingAnd for this reason the Judeans were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on Shabbatⓘ: at stake is pikuach nefeshⓘ, the saving of life that takes precedence over the rest of the seventh day.
173
Orthodox ReadingBut Jesus answered themⓘ: «My Father works until now, and I also workⓘ».
18
Orthodox ReadingFor this reason, then, the Judeans were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he loosing the Shabbatⓘ, but he was calling God his own Father, making himself equal to Godⓘ, in their eyes an assault upon the Shema, the confession of the oneness of YHWHⓘ.
