Καὶ ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἡρῴδης, φανερὸν γὰρ ἐγένετο τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ⸀ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων ⸂ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν⸃, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἐνεργοῦσιν αἱ δυνάμεις ἐν αὐτῷ·
Il re Erode sentì parlare di Gesù, perché il suo nome era diventato famoso. Si diceva: «Giovanni il Battista è risorto dai morti e per questo i prodigi si compiono in lui».
King Herodⓘ heard of Jesus, for his name had become manifest, and it was said: «John the Baptist has been raised from the deadⓘ, and for this reason the powers are at work in him».

ἀκούσας δὲ ⸀ὁ Ἡρῴδης ⸀ἔλεγεν· Ὃν ἐγὼ ἀπεκεφάλισα Ἰωάννην, οὗτος ⸀ἠγέρθη.
Ma Erode, al sentirne parlare, diceva: «Quel Giovanni che io ho fatto decapitare, è risorto!».
But Herod, on hearing it, said: «That John whom I beheadedⓘ, this man has been raised».

Αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἀποστείλας ἐκράτησεν τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸν ἐν φυλακῇ διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι αὐτὴν ἐγάμησεν·
Proprio Erode infatti aveva mandato ad arrestare Giovanni e lo aveva messo in prigione a causa di Erodìade, moglie di suo fratello Filippo, perché l'aveva sposata.
For Herod himself had sent and arrested John and had bound him in prisonⓘ on account of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brotherⓘ, since he had married her.

ἔλεγεν γὰρ ὁ Ἰωάννης τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ ὅτι Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου.
Giovanni infatti diceva a Erode: «Non ti è lecito tenere con te la moglie di tuo fratello».
For John kept saying to Herod: «It is not lawful for you to keep your brother's wife», denouncing a union of ʿervah, the forbidden nakednesses (Lev 18:16): the Torah forbids the wife of a living brother, and the levirate (yibbum) applies only to a brother who has died without children — here Philip is alive, hence incest and adulteryⓘ.

ἡ δὲ Ἡρῳδιὰς ἐνεῖχεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἤθελεν αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο·
Per questo Erodìade lo odiava e voleva farlo uccidere, ma non poteva,
Herodias held a grudge against himⓘ and wanted to kill him, but could not,

ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης ἐφοβεῖτο τὸν Ἰωάννην, εἰδὼς αὐτὸν ἄνδρα δίκαιον καὶ ἅγιον, καὶ συνετήρει αὐτόν, καὶ ἀκούσας αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ⸀ἠπόρει, καὶ ἡδέως αὐτοῦ ἤκουεν.
perché Erode temeva Giovanni, sapendolo uomo giusto e santo, e vigilava su di lui; e, avendolo ascoltato, restava molto perplesso, tuttavia lo ascoltava volentieri.
because Herod fearedⓘ John, knowing him to be a tzaddiq we-qadosh, a righteous and holy manⓘ, and protected him; and after listening to him he remained greatly perplexedⓘ, yet he kept listening to himⓘ gladly.

Καὶ γενομένης ἡμέρας εὐκαίρου ὅτε Ἡρῴδης τοῖς γενεσίοις αὐτοῦ δεῖπνον ⸀ἐποίησεν τοῖς μεγιστᾶσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῖς χιλιάρχοις καὶ τοῖς πρώτοις τῆς Γαλιλαίας,
Venne però il giorno propizio, quando Erode, per il suo compleanno, fece un banchetto per i grandi della sua corte...
And when a fitting day came, when Herod, for the banquet of his birthday (genesia), a pagan court festivalⓘ, gave a feast for the great men of his court, the megistanesⓘ, for the commanders of a thousand (chiliarchoi)ⓘ and for the notables of Galilee, the ruling classⓘ,

⸀καὶ ἐξελθοῦσα εἶπεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς· Τί ⸀αἰτήσωμαι; ἡ δὲ εἶπεν· Τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ ⸀βαπτίζοντος.
«La testa di Giovanni il Battista».
And she went out and said to her mother: «What shall I ask?». She replied: «The head of John the Baptizer».

καὶ ⸀εὐθὺς ἀποστείλας ὁ βασιλεὺς σπεκουλάτορα ἐπέταξεν ⸀ἐνέγκαι τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ. ⸀καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπεκεφάλισεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
lo fece decapitare nella prigione.
And immediately the king, having sent a guardsman of the escortⓘ, ordered him to bring his headⓘ. And he went and beheaded him in the prison,
