Orthodox ReadingKing Herodⓘ heard of Jesus, for his name had become manifest, and it was said: «John the Baptist has been raised from the deadⓘ, and for this reason the powers are at work in him».

Orthodox ReadingFor John kept saying to Herod: «It is not lawful for you to keep your brother's wife», denouncing a union of ʿervah, the forbidden nakednesses (Lev 18:16): the Torah forbids the wife of a living brother, and the levirate (yibbum) applies only to a brother who has died without children — here Philip is alive, hence incest and adulteryⓘ.
