GreekΤότε ἀπεκρίθησαν ⸀αὐτῷ τινες τῶν γραμματέων καὶ Φαρισαίων λέγοντες· Διδάσκαλε, θέλομεν ἀπὸ σοῦ σημεῖον ἰδεῖν.
Orthodox ReadingThen some scribes (soferim, the learned of the Torah) and Pharisees (perushim, the observant) answeredⓘ him, saying: «Teacher Teacherⓘ, we wish to see a sign (ot, the wonder demanded as proof) from you».

Greekὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Γενεὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μοιχαλὶς σημεῖον ἐπιζητεῖ, καὶ σημεῖον οὐ δοθήσεται αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον Ἰωνᾶ τοῦ προφήτου.
Orthodox ReadingBut he answered them: «An evil and adulterousⓘ generation insistently seeks a sign (ot), and no sign shall be givenⓘ to it except the sign of Jonah (Yonah) the prophet.

Greekὥσπερ γὰρ ἦν Ἰωνᾶς ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ τοῦ κήτους τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας, οὕτως ἔσται ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ τῆς γῆς τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας.
Orthodox ReadingFor just as he was in the belly of the great fish three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man (Bar Enash, the figure of judgment of Daniel 7:13) be in the heart of the earth, in Sheol (she'ol, the abode of the dead) for as many three days and three nights: those days of Jonah are the typosⓘ, and the Son of Man truly descends there, not in appearance only.

Greekτότε πορεύεται καὶ παραλαμβάνει μεθ’ ἑαυτοῦ ἑπτὰ ἕτερα πνεύματα πονηρότερα ἑαυτοῦ, καὶ εἰσελθόντα κατοικεῖ ἐκεῖ· καὶ γίνεται τὰ ἔσχατα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκείνου χείρονα τῶν πρώτων. οὕτως ἔσται καὶ τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ τῇ πονηρᾷ.
Orthodox ReadingThen it goes and takes with itself another seven spiritsⓘ more evil than itself, and having entered they dwell there; and the last things of that man become worse than the first. So will it also be for this evil generation».
