Καὶ παράγων ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖθεν εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον, Μαθθαῖον λεγόμενον, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ἀκολούθει μοι· καὶ ἀναστὰς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ.
Andando via di là, Gesù vide un uomo, chiamato Matteo, seduto al banco delle imposte, e gli disse: «Seguimi». Ed egli si alzò e lo seguì.
As he was going away, Jesus saw a man, Matthew, seated at the tax boothⓘ, and said to him: «Follow meⓘ». And he rose and followed him.

Καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτοῦ ἀνακειμένου ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ, ⸀καὶ ἰδοὺ πολλοὶ τελῶναι καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἐλθόντες συνανέκειντο τῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ.
Mentre sedeva a tavola in casa, sopraggiunsero molti pubblicani e peccatori e si misero a tavola con Gesù e con i suoi discepoli.
While he was reclining at table in the house, many tax collectors and sinnersⓘ came and reclined at table with Jesus and the disciples.

καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ⸀ἔλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ· Διὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει ὁ διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν;
Vedendo ciò, i farisei dicevano ai suoi discepoli: «Perché il vostro maestro mangia insieme ai pubblicani e ai peccatori?».
The Phariseesⓘ said to the disciples: «Why does your teacher eat with the tax collectors and the sinnersⓘ?».

ὁ ⸀δὲ ἀκούσας ⸀εἶπεν· Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλὰ οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες.
Udito questo, disse: «Non sono i sani che hanno bisogno del medico, ma i malati.
He heard and said: «It is not the healthy who need the physician, but the sickⓘ.

πορευθέντες δὲ μάθετε τί ἐστιν· Ἔλεος θέλω καὶ οὐ θυσίαν· οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον καλέσαι δικαίους ἀλλὰ ⸀ἁμαρτωλούς.
Andate a imparare che cosa significhi: Misericordia io voglio e non sacrifici. Infatti non sono venuto a chiamare i giusti, ma i peccatori».
Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrificeⓘ. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinnersⓘ».
