אני הגבר ראה עני בשבט עברתו
Ἐγὼ ἀνὴρ ὁ βλέπων πτωχείαν ἐν ῥάβδῳ θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ ἐπ’ ἐμέ·
I am the manⓘ who has seen afflictionⓘ under the rodⓘ of his wrathⓘ.

אותי נהג וילך חשך ולא אור
παρέλαβέν με καὶ ἀπήγαγεν εἰς σκότος καὶ οὐ φῶς,
He has led me and driven me into darknessⓘ and not into light;
3
אך בי ישב יהפך ידו כל היום
πλὴν ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐπέστρεψεν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν.
yes, against me alone he turns and returns his handⓘ all day long.

בלה בשרי ועורי שבר עצמותי
Ἐπαλαίωσεν σάρκας μου καὶ δέρμα μου, ὀστέα μου συνέτριψεν·
He has worn away my fleshⓘ and my skin, he has broken my bones;
5
בנה עלי ויקף ראש ותלאה
ἀνῳκοδόμησεν κατ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐκύκλωσεν κεφαλήν μου καὶ ἐμόχθησεν,
he has built siege worksⓘ against me and surrounded me with venomⓘ and travail;
6
במחשכים הושיבני כמתי עולם
ἐν σκοτεινοῖς ἐκάθισέν με ὡς νεκροὺς αἰῶνος.
in dark places he has made me sit like the dead of long agoⓘ.
7
גדר בעדי ולא אצא הכביד נחשתי
Ἀνῳκοδόμησεν κατ’ ἐμοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἐξελεύσομαι, ἐβάρυνεν χαλκόν μου·
He has walled me inⓘ so that I cannot go out, he has made my bronze chains heavy;

גם כי אזעק ואשוע שתם תפלתי
καί γε κεκράξομαι καὶ βοήσω, ἀπέφραξεν προσευχήν μου·
even when I cry and call out, he has shut outⓘ my prayer;
9
גדר דרכי בגזית נתיבתי עוה
ἀνῳκοδόμησεν ὁδούς μου, ἐνέφραξεν τρίβους μου, ἐτάραξεν.
he has walled up my ways with hewn stonesⓘ, he has twisted my paths.
10
דב ארב הוא לי אריה ארי במסתרים
Ἄρκος ἐνεδρεύουσα αὐτός μοι, λέων ἐν κρυφαίοις·
A bearⓘ lying in wait he is for me, a lionⓘ in hiding;
11
דרכי סורר ויפשחני שמני שמם
κατεδίωξεν ἀφεστηκότα καὶ κατέπαυσέν με, ἔθετό με ἠφανισμένην·
he has turned aside my ways and torn me apartⓘ, he has made me desolate;
12
דרך קשתו ויציבני כמטרא לחץ
ἐνέτεινεν τόξον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐστήλωσέν με ὡς σκοπὸν εἰς βέλος.
he has bent his bowⓘ and set me as a target for the arrow.
13
הביא בכליותי בני אשפתו
Εἰσήγαγεν τοῖς νεφροῖς μου ἰοὺς φαρέτρας αὐτοῦ·
He has driven into my kidneys the children of his quiverⓘ;
14
הייתי שחק לכל עמי נגינתם כל היום
ἐγενήθην γέλως παντὶ λαῷ μου, ψαλμὸς αὐτῶν ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν·
I have become a derisionⓘ to all my people, their song of scornⓘ all day long.
15
השביעני במרורים הרוני לענה
ἐχόρτασέν με πικρίας, ἐμέθυσέν με χολῆς.
He has filled me with bitternessⓘ, he has made me drunk with wormwoodⓘ;
16
ויגרס בחצץ שני הכפישני באפר
Καὶ ἐξέβαλεν ψήφῳ ὀδόντας μου, ἐψώμισέν με σποδόν·
he has broken my teeth with gravelⓘ, he has ground me down into the ashes.
17
ותזנח משלום נפשי נשיתי טובה
καὶ ἀπώσατο ἐξ εἰρήνης ψυχήν μου, ἐπελαθόμην ἀγαθὰ
And he has thrust away from peaceⓘ my soul, I have forgotten goodness
18
ואמר אבד נצחי ותוחלתי מיהוה
καὶ εἶπα Ἀπώλετο νεῖκός μου καὶ ἡ ἐλπίς μου ἀπὸ κυρίου.
and I said: Perished is my enduring strengthⓘ and my hope from the Tetragrammatonⓘ.

זכר עניי ומרודי לענה וראש
Ἐμνήσθην ἀπὸ πτωχείας μου καὶ ἐκ διωγμοῦ μου πικρίας καὶ χολῆς μου·
Remember my affliction and my wanderingⓘ, the wormwood and the venom;
20
זכור תזכור ותשיח ותשוח עליך נפשי
μνησθήσεται καὶ καταδολεσχήσει ἐπ’ ἐμὲ ἡ ψυχή μου·
surely it remembers, and bows downⓘ upon me does my soul;
21
זאת אשיב אל לבי על כן אוחיל
ταύτην τάξω εἰς τὴν καρδίαν μου, διὰ τοῦτο ὑπομενῶ.
this calling to mindⓘ to my heart — therefore I will hope.
