Introduction to Psalm 124

Psalm 124 text: structure of the song of collective liberation

Psalm 124 is the fifth of the Shir HaMa'alot (songs of ascents, Ps 120-134), attributed by tradition to David — שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת לְדָוִד (Shir Hama'alot le-David). The text opens with a counterfactual conditional formula: לוּלֵי יְהוָה שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ יֹאמַר נָא יִשְׂרָאֵל (lulei YHWH shehayah lanu yomar na Yisrael), "if YHWH had not been on our side — let Israel say" (Ps 124:1). The repetition in verse 2 MT — לוּלֵי יְהוָה שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ (lulei YHWH shehayah lanu) — is liturgical intensification: the community confesses that without YHWH annihilation was certain. The genre is the todah (thanksgiving), the most intense form of Israelite prayer, in which the averted danger is enumerated to magnify the divine name.

Verses 3-5 MT paint the danger with three images: swallowing alive (אָזַי חַיִּים בְּלָעוּנוּ, azai chayyim bela'unu), overflowing waters (הַמַּיִם שְׁטָפוּנוּ, hammayim shtefonenu) and a raging torrent (הַמַּיִם הַזֵּידוֹנִים, hammayim hazeidonim). The triple aquatic image evokes the type of the Exodus: the waters of the Red Sea that swallowed Israel's enemies instead of Israel — the narrative structure of divine liberation is the same (Ps 124:4-5). Verse 6 MT introduces the blessing: בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה שֶׁלֹּא נְתָנָנוּ טֶרֶף לְשִׁנֵּיהֶם (baruch YHWH shello netananu teref leshineihem), "blessed be YHWH, who has not given us as prey to their teeth" (Ps 124:6).

'Ozrenu beShem YHWH: Psalm 124 commentary on the name of the Creator as help

Verse 8 MT is the theological summit of Psalm 124: עֶזְרֵנוּ בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה עֹשֵׂה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ (ozrenu beShem YHWH oseh shamayim va'aretz), "our help is in the name of YHWH, who made heaven and earth" (Ps 124:8). The formula repeats verbatim Ps 121:2: עֶזְרִי מֵעִם יְהוָה עֹשֵׂה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ (ezri me'im YHWH oseh shamayim va'aretz) — the name of the Creator is the ontological foundation of every help. The term Shem (name) in biblical tradition is not a linguistic label but the irradiation of the covenantal essence of YHWH. The Mishnah Berakhot 9:5 codifies the underlying principle: the obligation to bless God both for evil and for good (חַיָּב אָדָם לְבָרֵךְ עַל הָרָעָה כְּשֵׁם שֶׁהוּא מְבָרֵךְ עַל הַטּוֹבָה) — gratitude for liberation presupposes recognition of the real danger.
