Introduction to Psalm 125
Psalm 125 text: Zion immovable and YHWH's protection
Psalm 125 is the sixth of the Shir HaMa'alot (Songs of Ascents, Ps 120-134). Verse 1 MT opens with a foundational comparison: הַבֹּטְחִים בַּיהוָה כְּהַר צִיּוֹן לֹא יִמּוֹט לְעוֹלָם יֵשֵׁב (habbotech'im ba-YHWH ke-Har Tziyon lo yimmot le'olam yeshev), "those who trust in YHWH are like Mount Zion: it will never be shaken, it stands firm forever" (Ps 125:1). The verb נוּט (nut, to totter) describes instability: those who trust in YHWH are exempt from this tottering not by their own strength but by the solidity of the covenantal foundation. Verse 2 MT extends the metaphor: כִּי יְרוּשָׁלַיִם הָרִים סָבִיב לָהּ וַיהוָה סָבִיב לְעַמּוֹ מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם (ki Yerushalayim harim saviv lah va-YHWH saviv le'ammo me'atta ve'ad olam), "as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so YHWH surrounds his people from now and forever" (Ps 125:2). The image of topographical defense becomes covenantal defense: YHWH is the living perimeter of the people — direct inspiration of Isa 26:3 ("You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you").
Verse 3 MT introduces the ethical dimension of protection: כִּי לֹא יָנוּחַ שֵׁבֶט הָרֶשַׁע עַל גּוֹרַל הַצַּדִּיקִים (ki lo yanach shevet haResha al goral haTzadiqim), "for the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous" (Ps 125:3). The goral (lot, inherited portion) of the righteous is beyond the reach of the wicked's power: protection is not merely physical but ontological. Mishnah Berakhot 9:5 codifies the spiritual foundation of this trust: the obligation to bless God for evil as for good (חַיָּב אָדָם לְבָרֵךְ עַל הָרָעָה כְּשֵׁם שֶׁהוּא מְבָרֵךְ עַל הַטּוֹבָה) — the stability of the trusting is not the absence of trials but covenantal trust in every circumstance.
Psalm 125 commentary: ethical reciprocity and shalom upon Israel
Verses 4-5 MT articulate the ethical reciprocity of Psalm 125: הֵיטִיבָה יְהוָה לַטּוֹבִים וְלִישָׁרִים בְּלִבּוֹתָם (heitiva YHWH latovim velishrim bilvotam), "do good, O YHWH, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts" (Ps 125:4). The uprightness of heart (lev yashar) is the opposite of crookedness (aqalqallot): verse 5 MT closes with the definitive distinction between those who pursue crooked ways — led by YHWH among evildoers — and the people at peace. The concluding formula שָׁלוֹם עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל (shalom al Yisrael) is the covenant's seal, taken up by Paul in Gal 6:16 as a blessing upon the "Israel of God": shalom is the covenantal fruit of uprightness of heart.
