εἶπον γὰρ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λογισάμενοι οὐκ ὀρθῶς Ὀλίγος ἐστὶν καὶ λυπηρὸς ὁ βίος ἡμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἴασις ἐν τελευτῇ ἀνθρώπου, καὶ οὐκ ἐγνώσθη ὁ ἀναλύσας ἐξ ᾅδου.
For they said among themselves, reasoning not rightly: «Brief and sorrowful is our lifeⓘ, and there is no remedyⓘ at the end of man, nor has anyone been known to have returned from Hadesⓘ.

ὅτι αὐτοσχεδίως ἐγενήθημεν καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐσόμεθα ὡς οὐχ ὑπάρξαντες· ὅτι καπνὸς ἡ πνοὴ ἐν ῥισὶν ἡμῶν, καὶ ὁ λόγος σπινθὴρ ἐν κινήσει καρδίας ἡμῶν,
By chance we were born, and afterward we shall be as though we had never existed, because smokeⓘ is the breathⓘ in our nostrils, and thought a spark in the beating of our heart;

οὗ σβεσθέντος τέφρα ἀποβήσεται τὸ σῶμα καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα διαχυθήσεται ὡς χαῦνος ἀήρ.
when this is extinguished, the body will become ashesⓘ and the spiritⓘ will dissolve like thin air.

καὶ τὸ ὄνομα ἡμῶν ἐπιλησθήσεται ἐν χρόνῳ, καὶ οὐθεὶς μνημονεύσει τῶν ἔργων ἡμῶν· καὶ παρελεύσεται ὁ βίος ἡμῶν ὡς ἴχνη νεφέλης καὶ ὡς ὁμίχλη διασκεδασθήσεται διωχθεῖσα ὑπὸ ἀκτίνων ἡλίου καὶ ὑπὸ θερμότητος αὐτοῦ βαρυνθεῖσα.
Our nameⓘ will be forgotten with time, and no one will remember our works; our life will pass like the trace of a cloud and scatter like mist pursued by the rays of the sun and weighed down by its heat.

σκιᾶς γὰρ πάροδος ὁ καιρὸς ἡμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀναποδισμὸς τῆς τελευτῆς ἡμῶν, ὅτι κατεσφραγίσθη καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀναστρέφει.
The passing of a shadowⓘ is our timeⓘ, and there is no return from our end, for it is sealedⓘ and no one turns back.

δεῦτε οὖν καὶ ἀπολαύσωμεν τῶν ὄντων ἀγαθῶν καὶ χρησώμεθα τῇ κτίσει ὡς ἐν νεότητι σπουδαίως·
Come then and let us enjoy the good things of the present, and make use of the creationⓘ with ardor as in youth;

οἴνου πολυτελοῦς καὶ μύρων πλησθῶμεν, καὶ μὴ παροδευσάτω ἡμᾶς ἄνθος ἔαρος·
let us fill ourselves with costly wine and ointmentsⓘ, and let not the flower of springtime escape us;

στεψώμεθα ῥόδων κάλυξιν πρὶν ἢ μαρανθῆναι·
let us crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither;

μηδεὶς ἡμῶν ἄμοιρος ἔστω τῆς ἡμετέρας ἀγερωχίας, πανταχῇ καταλίπωμεν σύμβολα τῆς εὐφροσύνης, ὅτι αὕτη ἡ μερὶς ἡμῶν καὶ ὁ κλῆρος οὗτος.
let none of us miss his share of our revelryⓘ, everywhere let us leave signs of merriment, for this is our portionⓘ and this our lotⓘ.

καταδυναστεύσωμεν πένητα δίκαιον, μὴ φεισώμεθα χήρας μηδὲ πρεσβύτου ἐντραπῶμεν πολιὰς πολυχρονίους·
Let us oppress the righteous poor manⓘ, let us not spare the widow nor respect the gray hair of the aged man of many years;

ἔστω δὲ ἡμῶν ἡ ἰσχὺς νόμος τῆς δικαιοσύνης, τὸ γὰρ ἀσθενὲς ἄχρηστον ἐλέγχεται.
let our strength be the law of justiceⓘ, for the weak man is declared useless.

ἐνεδρεύσωμεν τὸν δίκαιον, ὅτι δύσχρηστος ἡμῖν ἐστιν καὶ ἐναντιοῦται τοῖς ἔργοις ἡμῶν καὶ ὀνειδίζει ἡμῖν ἁμαρτήματα νόμου καὶ ἐπιφημίζει ἡμῖν ἁμαρτήματα παιδείας ἡμῶν·
Let us lie in wait for the righteous man, because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our deeds and reproaches us for transgressions of the lawⓘ and accuses us of failings against our upbringingⓘ;

ἐπαγγέλλεται γνῶσιν ἔχειν θεοῦ καὶ παῖδα κυρίου ἑαυτὸν ὀνομάζει·
he professes to have knowledge of Godⓘ and calls himself servant-child of the Lordⓘ.

ἐγένετο ἡμῖν εἰς ἔλεγχον ἐννοιῶν ἡμῶν, βαρύς ἐστιν ἡμῖν καὶ βλεπόμενος,
He has become for us a living refutation of our thoughts; the very sight of him is a burden to us,

ὅτι ἀνόμοιος τοῖς ἄλλοις ὁ βίος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐξηλλαγμέναι αἱ τρίβοι αὐτοῦ·
because his life is unlike other men's and his paths are different;

εἰς κίβδηλον ἐλογίσθημεν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἀπέχεται τῶν ὁδῶν ἡμῶν ὡς ἀπὸ ἀκαθαρσιῶν· μακαρίζει ἔσχατα δικαίων καὶ ἀλαζονεύεται πατέρα θεόν.
he regards us as counterfeitⓘ, and keeps away from our ways as from uncleanness; he proclaims blessed the end of the righteous and boasts of having God as fatherⓘ.

ἴδωμεν εἰ οἱ λόγοι αὐτοῦ ἀληθεῖς, καὶ πειράσωμεν τὰ ἐν ἐκβάσει αὐτοῦ·
Let us see whether his words are true, and test what will happen at the end of his life;

εἰ γάρ ἐστιν ὁ δίκαιος υἱὸς θεοῦ, ἀντιλήμψεται αὐτοῦ καὶ ῥύσεται αὐτὸν ἐκ χειρὸς ἀνθεστηκότων.
for if the righteous man is God's sonⓘ, God will help him and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries.

ὕβρει καὶ βασάνῳ ἐτάσωμεν αὐτόν, ἵνα γνῶμεν τὴν ἐπιείκειαν αὐτοῦ καὶ δοκιμάσωμεν τὴν ἀνεξικακίαν αὐτοῦ·
With insult and tortureⓘ let us put him to the test, so that we may know his gentleness and prove his patienceⓘ;

θανάτῳ ἀσχήμονι καταδικάσωμεν αὐτόν, ἔσται γὰρ αὐτοῦ ἐπισκοπὴ ἐκ λόγων αὐτοῦ.
let us condemn him to a shameful deathⓘ, for — he says — there will be his protectionⓘ according to his words.

Ταῦτα ἐλογίσαντο, καὶ ἐπλανήθησαν· ἀπετύφλωσεν γὰρ αὐτοὺς ἡ κακία αὐτῶν,
Such things they thought, and they were deceived; for their wickedness blinded them,

καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν μυστήρια θεοῦ οὐδὲ μισθὸν ἤλπισαν ὁσιότητος οὐδὲ ἔκριναν γέρας ψυχῶν ἀμώμων.
and they did not know the mysteries of Godⓘ nor hoped for the reward of holiness nor esteemed the prize of blameless souls.

ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἔκτισεν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐπ’ ἀφθαρσίᾳ καὶ εἰκόνα τῆς ἰδίας ἀιδιότητος ἐποίησεν αὐτόν·
For God created man for incorruptionⓘ and made him imageⓘ of his own eternityⓘ;

φθόνῳ δὲ διαβόλου θάνατος εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον, πειράζουσιν δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ τῆς ἐκείνου μερίδος ὄντες.
but through the envy of the devilⓘ death entered the world, and those who belong to his side experience it.
