איש היה בארץ עוץ איוב שמו והיה האיש ההוא תם וישר וירא אלהים וסר מרע
Ἄνθρωπός τις ἦν ἐν χώρᾳ τῇ Αυσίτιδι, ᾧ ὄνομα Ιωβ, καὶ ἦν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ἀληθινός, ἄμεμπτος, δίκαιος, θεοσεβής, ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηροῦ πράγματος.
There was a man in the land of Utzⓘ, whose name was Iyyòvⓘ, and that man was blamelessⓘ and uprightⓘ, fearing God and shunning evil.

ויולדו לו שבעה בנים ושלוש בנות
ἐγένοντο δὲ αὐτῷ υἱοὶ ἑπτὰ καὶ θυγατέρες τρεῖς.
Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

ויהי מקנהו שבעת אלפי צאן ושלשת אלפי גמלים וחמש מאות צמד בקר וחמש מאות אתונות ועבדה רבה מאד ויהי האיש ההוא גדול מכל בני קדם
καὶ ἦν τὰ κτήνη αὐτοῦ πρόβατα ἑπτακισχίλια, κάμηλοι τρισχίλιαι, ζεύγη βοῶν πεντακόσια, ὄνοι θήλειαι νομάδες πεντακόσιαι, καὶ ὑπηρεσία πολλὴ σφόδρα καὶ ἔργα μεγάλα ἦν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἦν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος εὐγενὴς τῶν ἀφ’ ἡλίου ἀνατολῶν.
He possessed seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; and that man was the greatest among all the sons of the Eastⓘ.

והלכו בניו ועשו משתה בית איש יומו ושלחו וקראו לשלשת אחיתיהם אחיותיהם לאכל ולשתות עמהם
συμπορευόμενοι δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἐποιοῦσαν πότον καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν συμπαραλαμβάνοντες ἅμα καὶ τὰς τρεῖς ἀδελφὰς αὐτῶν ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν μετ’ αὐτῶν.
His sons used to go and hold a feast, each on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

ויהי כי הקיפו ימי המשתה וישלח איוב ויקדשם והשכים בבקר והעלה עלות מספר כלם כי אמר איוב אולי חטאו בני וברכו אלהים בלבבם ככה יעשה איוב כל הימים
καὶ ὡς ἂν συνετελέσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ πότου, ἀπέστελλεν Ιωβ καὶ ἐκαθάριζεν αὐτοὺς ἀνιστάμενος τὸ πρωῒ καὶ προσέφερεν περὶ αὐτῶν θυσίας κατὰ τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτῶν καὶ μόσχον ἕνα περὶ ἁμαρτίας περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν αὐτῶν· ἔλεγεν γὰρ Ιωβ Μήποτε οἱ υἱοί μου ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ αὐτῶν κα κὰ ἐνενόησαν πρὸς θεόν. οὕτως οὖν ἐποίει Ιωβ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας.
When the days of the feast had run their course, Iyyòv would send and sanctify them, and rising early in the morning he would offer burnt offeringsⓘ according to the number of them all — for he said in his heart: «Perhaps my sons have sinned and have cursedⓘ God in their hearts». Thus Iyyòv did continually.

ויהי היום ויבאו בני האלהים להתיצב על יהוה ויבוא גם השטן בתוכם
Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦλθον οἱ ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ παραστῆναι ἐνώπιον τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ ὁ διάβολος ἦλθεν μετ’ αὐτῶν.
Now there was a day when the sons of Godⓘ came to present themselves before the Tetragrammaton, and the Accuserⓘ also came among them, roaming the earth.

ויאמר יהוה אל השטן מאין תבא ויען השטן את יהוה ויאמר משוט בארץ ומהתהלך בה
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ διαβόλῳ Πόθεν παραγέγονας; καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ διάβολος τῷ κυρίῳ εἶπεν Περιελθὼν τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐμπεριπατήσας τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν πάρειμι.
And the Tetragrammaton said to the Accuser: Where do you come from? And the Accuser answered the Tetragrammaton: From roaming through the earthⓘ and walking up and down in it.

ויאמר יהוה אל השטן השמת לבך על עבדי איוב כי אין כמהו בארץ איש תם וישר ירא אלהים וסר מרע
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος Προσέσχες τῇ διανοίᾳ σου κατὰ τοῦ παιδός μου Ιωβ, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κατ’ αὐτὸν τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἄνθρωπος ἄμεμπτος, ἀληθινός, θεοσεβής, ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηροῦ πράγματος;
And the Tetragrammaton said to the Accuser: Have you considered my servantⓘ Iyyòv? For there is no one like him on the earth, a man blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil.

ויען השטן את יהוה ויאמר החנם ירא איוב אלהים
ἀπεκρίθη δὲ ὁ διάβολος καὶ εἶπεν ἐναντίον τοῦ κυρίου Μὴ δωρεὰν σέβεται Ιωβ τὸν θεόν;
Then the Accuser answered the Tetragrammaton: Does Iyyòv fear God for nothingⓘ, without reason?

הלא את אתה שכת בעדו ובעד ביתו ובעד כל אשר לו מסביב מעשה ידיו ברכת ומקנהו פרץ בארץ
οὐ σὺ περιέφραξας τὰ ἔξω αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔσω τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔξω πάντων τῶν ὄντων αὐτῷ κύκλῳ; τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ εὐλόγησας καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ἐποίησας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
Have you not indeed built a protective hedgeⓘ around him, around his house, and around all that he has on every side? The work of his hands you have blessed, and his flocks have spread throughout the land.

ואולם שלח נא ידך וגע בכל אשר לו אם לא על פניך יברכך
ἀλλὰ ἀπόστειλον τὴν χεῖρά σου καὶ ἅψαι πάντων, ὧν ἔχει· εἰ μὴν εἰς πρόσωπόν σε εὐλογήσει.
But stretch out your hand now and touch all that he has: see whether he does not curseⓘ you to your face!

ויאמר יהוה אל השטן הנה כל אשר לו בידך רק אליו אל תשלח ידך ויצא השטן מעם פני יהוה
τότε εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ διαβόλῳ Ἰδοὺ πάντα, ὅσα ἔστιν αὐτῷ, δίδωμι ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ἀλλὰ αὐτοῦ μὴ ἅψῃ. καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ διάβολος παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου.
And the Tetragrammaton said to the Accuser: Behold, all that he has is in the power of your hand; only do not stretch out your hand against him. So the Accuser went out from the presence of the Tetragrammaton.

ויהי היום ובניו ובנתיו אכלים ושתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור
Καὶ ἦν ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη, οἱ υἱοὶ Ιωβ καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες αὐτοῦ ἔπινον οἶνον ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου.
Now there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,

ומלאך בא אל איוב ויאמר הבקר היו חרשות והאתנות רעות על ידיהם
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος ἦλθεν πρὸς Ιωβ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τὰ ζεύγη τῶν βοῶν ἠροτρία, καὶ αἱ θήλειαι ὄνοι ἐβόσκοντο ἐχόμεναι αὐτῶν·
and a messengerⓘ came to Iyyòv and said: The oxen were ploughing and the donkeys were grazing beside them,

ותפל שבא ותקחם ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך
καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ αἰχμαλωτεύοντες ᾐχμαλώτευσαν αὐτὰς καὶ τοὺς παῖδας ἀπέκτειναν ἐν μαχαίραις· σωθεὶς δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
and the Sabeansⓘ fell upon them and seized them, and they struck the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you.

עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר אש אלהים נפלה מן השמים ותבער בצאן ובנערים ותאכלם ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך
Ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἦλθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ιωβ Πῦρ ἔπεσεν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ κατέκαυσεν τὰ πρόβατα καὶ τοὺς ποιμένας κατέφαγεν ὁμοίως· καὶ σωθεὶς ἐγὼ μόνος ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
While he was still speaking, another came and said: A fire of Godⓘ fell from heaven and burned the sheep and the servants and consumed them; I alone have escaped to tell you.

עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר כשדים שמו שלשה ראשים ויפשטו על הגמלים ויקחום ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך
Ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἦλθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ιωβ Οἱ ἱππεῖς ἐποίησαν ἡμῖν κεφαλὰς τρεῖς καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν τὰς καμήλους καὶ ᾐχμαλώτευσαν αὐτὰς καὶ τοὺς παῖδας ἀπέκτειναν ἐν μαχαίραις· ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
While he was still speaking, another came and said: The Chaldeansⓘ, forming three companies, fell upon the camels and seized them, and they struck the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you.

עד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר בניך ובנותיך אכלים ושתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור
Ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἄλλος ἄγγελος ἔρχεται λέγων τῷ Ιωβ Τῶν υἱῶν σου καὶ τῶν θυγατέρων σου ἐσθιόντων καὶ πινόν των παρὰ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτῶν τῶν πρεσβυτέρῳ
While he was still speaking, another came and said: Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,

והנה רוח גדולה באה מעבר המדבר ויגע בארבע פנות הבית ויפל על הנערים וימותו ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך
ἐξαίφνης πνεῦμα μέγα ἐπῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς ἐρήμου καὶ ἥψατο τῶν τεσσάρων γωνιῶν τῆς οἰκίας, καὶ ἔπεσεν ἡ οἰκία ἐπὶ τὰ παιδία σου, καὶ ἐτελεύτησαν· ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι.
and behold, a great windⓘ came from across the desert and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they died; I alone have escaped to tell you.

ויקם איוב ויקרע את מעלו ויגז את ראשו ויפל ארצה וישתחו
Οὕτως ἀναστὰς Ιωβ διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκείρατο τὴν κόμην τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ πεσὼν χαμαὶ προσεκύνησεν καὶ εἶπεν
Then Iyyòv arose, tore his robe, shaved his head, fell to the ground, and prostrated himselfⓘ

ויאמר ערם יצתי יצאתי מבטן אמי וערם אשוב שמה יהוה נתן ויהוה לקח יהי שם יהוה מברך
Αὐτὸς γυμνὸς ἐξῆλθον ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου, γυμνὸς καὶ ἀπελεύσομαι ἐκεῖ· ὁ κύριος ἔδωκεν, ὁ κύριος ἀφείλατο· ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ ἔδοξεν, οὕτως καὶ ἐγένετο· εἴη τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου εὐλογημένον.
and said: Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return there. The Tetragrammaton has given, the Tetragrammaton has taken away: blessed be the Name of the Tetragrammaton.
22
בכל זאת לא חטא איוב ולא נתן תפלה לאלהים
Ἐν τούτοις πᾶσιν τοῖς συμβεβηκόσιν αὐτῷ οὐδὲν ἥμαρτεν Ιωβ ἐναντίον τοῦ κυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν ἀφροσύνην τῷ θεῷ.
In all this Iyyòv did not sin, nor did he ascribe to God anything unseemlyⓘ.
