ויען איוב ויאמר
Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει
And Iyyòvⓘ answered:

אמנם כי אתם עם ועמכם תמות חכמה
Εἶτα ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἄνθρωποι· ἦ μεθ’ ὑμῶν τελευτήσει σοφία.
Truly you are "the people," and with you wisdomⓘ will die!

גם לי לבב כמוכם לא נפל אנכי מכם ואת מי אין כמו אלה
κἀμοὶ μὲν καρδία καθ’ ὑμᾶς ἐστιν.
I too have a heartⓘ like yours, I am not inferior to you: and who does not know such things?

שחק לרעהו אהיה קרא לאלוה ויענהו שחוק צדיק תמים
δίκαιος γὰρ ἀνὴρ καὶ ἄμεμπτος ἐγενήθη εἰς χλεύασμα·
I have become an object of mockeryⓘ to my neighbor — I, who called upon God and he answered me —, the mockery of the righteous, of the blameless!

לפיד בוז לעשתות שאנן נכון למועדי רגל
εἰς χρόνον γὰρ τακτὸν ἡτοίμαστο πεσεῖν ὑπὸ ἄλλους οἴκους τε αὐτοῦ ἐκπορθεῖσθαι ὑπὸ ἀνόμων.
In the thought of one who lives at easeⓘ, there is contempt for misfortune: it is ready for him whose foot is slipping.

ישליו אהלים לשדדים ובטחות למרגיזי אל לאשר הביא אלוה בידו
οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ μηδεὶς πεποιθέτω πονηρὸς ὢν ἀθῷος ἔσεσθαι, ὅσοι παροργίζουσιν τὸν κύριον, ὡς οὐχὶ καὶ ἔτασις αὐτῶν ἔσται.
The tents of the plunderersⓘ are at peace, those who provoke God are secure, those who carry their god in their own hand.

ואולם שאל נא בהמות ותרך ועוף השמים ויגד לך
ἀλλὰ δὴ ἐπερώτησον τετράποδα ἐάν σοι εἴπωσιν, πετεινὰ δὲ οὐρανοῦ ἐάν σοι ἀπαγγείλωσιν·
But ask now the beastsⓘ, and they will teach you; ask the birds of the sky, and they will declare it to you;

או שיח לארץ ותרך ויספרו לך דגי הים
ἐκδιήγησαι δὲ γῇ ἐάν σοι φράσῃ, καὶ ἐξηγήσονταί σοι οἱ ἰχθύες τῆς θαλάσσης.
or speak to the earth, and it will instruct you; the fish of the seaⓘ will tell it to you.

מי לא ידע בכל אלה כי יד יהוה עשתה זאת
τίς οὐκ ἔγνω ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις ὅτι χεὶρ κυρίου ἐποίησεν ταῦτα;
Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Tetragrammatonⓘ has done all this?

אשר בידו נפש כל חי ורוח כל בשר איש
εἰ μὴ ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ ψυχὴ πάντων τῶν ζώντων καὶ πνεῦμα παντὸς ἀνθρώπου;
In his hand is the nèfeshⓘ, the life of every living thing, and the rùachⓘ of all human flesh.

הלא אזן מלין תבחן וחך אכל יטעם לו
οὖς μὲν γὰρ ῥήματα διακρίνει, λάρυγξ δὲ σῖτα γεύεται.
Does not the earⓘ discern words, just as the palate tastes food?

בישישים חכמה וארך ימים תבונה
ἐν πολλῷ χρόνῳ σοφία, ἐν δὲ πολλῷ βίῳ ἐπιστήμη.
Among the agedⓘ is wisdom, and in length of days understanding?
13
עמו חכמה וגבורה לו עצה ותבונה
παρ’ αὐτῷ σοφία καὶ δύναμις, αὐτῷ βουλὴ καὶ σύνεσις.
With him are wisdom and mightⓘ, his are counsel and understanding.
14
הן יהרוס ולא יבנה יסגר על איש ולא יפתח
ἐὰν καταβάλῃ, τίς οἰκοδομήσει; ἐὰν κλείσῃ κατὰ ἀνθρώπων, τίς ἀνοίξει;
Behold, if he tears downⓘ, no one rebuilds; if he shuts a man in, no one opens.

הן יעצר במים ויבשו וישלחם ויהפכו ארץ
ἐὰν κωλύσῃ τὸ ὥδωρ, ξηρανεῖ τὴν γῆν· ἐὰν δὲ ἐπαφῇ, ἀπώλεσεν αὐτὴν καταστρέψας.
He withholds the waters and there is drought; he releases them and they overwhelm the earth.

עמו עז ותושיה לו שגג ומשגה
παρ’ αὐτῷ κράτος καὶ ἰσχύς, αὐτῷ ἐπιστήμη καὶ σύνεσις.
With him are strength and effective wisdomⓘ, his are the deceived and the deceiver.

מוליך יועצים שולל ושפטים יהולל
διάγων βουλευτὰς αἰχμαλώτους, κριτὰς δὲ γῆς ἐξέστησεν.
He leads barefootⓘ the counselors, and makes judges fools;
18
מוסר מלכים פתח ויאסר אזור במתניהם
καθιζάνων βασιλεῖς ἐπὶ θρόνους καὶ περιέδησεν ζώνῃ ὀσφύας αὐτῶν.
he looses the bonds of kingsⓘ and binds a loincloth around their waists;
19
מוליך כהנים שולל ואתנים יסלף
ἐξαποστέλλων ἱερεῖς αἰχμαλώτους, δυνάστας δὲ γῆς κατέστρεψεν.
he leads priestsⓘ away barefoot and overthrows the mighty;
20
מסיר שפה לנאמנים וטעם זקנים יקח
διαλλάσσων χείλη πιστῶν, σύνεσιν δὲ πρεσβυτέρων ἔγνω.
he removes the speech from the trustedⓘ and takes away the discernment of the elders;
21
שופך בוז על נדיבים ומזיח אפיקים רפה
ἐκχέων ἀτιμίαν ἐπ’ ἄρχοντας, ταπεινοὺς δὲ ἰάσατο.
he pours contempt on noblesⓘ and loosens the belt of the strong;
22
מגלה עמקות מני חשך ויצא לאור צלמות
ἀνακαλύπτων βαθέα ἐκ σκότους, ἐξήγαγεν δὲ εἰς φῶς σκιὰν θανάτου.
he uncovers deep things out of darkness and brings to light the shadow of deathⓘ;
23
משגיא לגוים ויאבדם שטח לגוים וינחם
πλανῶν ἔθνη καὶ ἀπολλύων αὐτά, καταστρωννύων ἔθνη καὶ καθοδηγῶν αὐτά.
he makes nations greatⓘ and destroys them, he spreads them out and scatters them;

מסיר לב ראשי עם הארץ ויתעם בתהו לא דרך
διαλλάσσων καρδίας ἀρχόντων γῆς, ἐπλάνησεν δὲ αὐτοὺς ὁδῷ, ᾗ οὐκ ᾔδεισαν·
he takes away the understanding of the chiefs of the people of the earth and makes them wander in a pathless chaosⓘ;
25
ימששו חשך ולא אור ויתעם כשכור
ψηλαφήσαισαν σκότος καὶ μὴ φῶς, πλανηθείησαν δὲ ὥσπερ ὁ μεθύων.
they grope in darkness without light, and he makes them stagger like a drunkardⓘ.
