ויען יהוה את איוב מנ הסערה מן הסערה ויאמר
Μετὰ δὲ τὸ παύσασθαι Ελιουν τῆς λέξεως εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ Ιωβ διὰ λαίλαπος καὶ νεφῶν
And the Tetragrammatonⓘ answered Iyyòvⓘ from the whirlwindⓘ, and said:

מי זה מחשיך עצה במלין בלי דעת
Τίς οὗτος ὁ κρύπτων με βουλήν, συνέχων δὲ ῥήματα ἐν καρδίᾳ, ἐμὲ δὲ οἴεται κρύπτειν;
Who is this who darkens the designⓘ with words devoid of knowledgeⓘ?

אזר נא כגבר חלציך ואשאלך והודיעני
ζῶσαι ὥσπερ ἀνὴρ τὴν ὀσφύν σου, ἐρωτήσω δέ σε, σὺ δέ μοι ἀποκρίθητι.
Gird your loinsⓘ: I will question youⓘ and you shall instruct me.

איפה היית ביסדי ארץ הגד אם ידעת בינה
ποῦ ἦς ἐν τῷ θεμελιοῦν με τὴν γῆν; ἀπάγγειλον δέ μοι, εἰ ἐπίστῃ σύνεσιν.
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earthⓘ? Declare it, if you possess understandingⓘ.

מי שם ממדיה כי תדע או מי נטה עליה קו
τίς ἔθετο τὰ μέτρα αὐτῆς, εἰ οἶδας; ἢ τίς ὁ ἐπαγαγὼν σπαρτίον ἐπ’ αὐτῆς;
Who fixed its measurementsⓘ — perhaps you know? — or who stretched over it the measuring lineⓘ?

על מה אדניה הטבעו או מי ירה אבן פנתה
ἐπὶ τίνος οἱ κρίκοι αὐτῆς πεπήγασιν; τίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ βαλὼν λίθον γωνιαῖον ἐπ’ αὐτῆς;
Upon what were its basesⓘ sunk, or who set its cornerstoneⓘ,

ברן יחד כוכבי בקר ויריעו כל בני אלהים
ὅτε ἐγενήθησαν ἄστρα, ᾔνεσάν με φωνῇ μεγάλῃ πάντες ἄγγελοί μου.
when the morning starsⓘ sang together and all the sons of Godⓘ shouted for joy?

ויסך בדלתים ים בגיחו מרחם יצא
ἔφραξα δὲ θάλασσαν πύλαις, ὅτε ἐμαίμασσεν ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτῆς ἐκπορευομένη·
Who shut the sea with doorsⓘ when, bursting forth with violence, it came out of the wombⓘ that contained it,

בשומי ענן לבשו וערפל חתלתו
ἐθέμην δὲ αὐτῇ νέφος ἀμφίασιν, ὁμίχλῃ δὲ αὐτὴν ἐσπαργάνωσα·
when I made the cloud its garmentⓘ and thick darknessⓘ its swaddling band,

ואשבר עליו חקי ואשים בריח ודלתים
ἐθέμην δὲ αὐτῇ ὅρια περιθεὶς κλεῖθρα καὶ πύλας·
when I fixed my decreeⓘ upon it, bars and doors,
11
ואמר עד פה תבוא ולא תסיף ופא ישית בגאון גליך
εἶπα δὲ αὐτῇ Μέχρι τούτου ἐλεύσῃ καὶ οὐχ ὑπερβήσῃ, ἀλλ’ ἐν σεαυτῇ συντριβήσεταί σου τὰ κύματα.
and said: «Thus far shall you come, and no fartherⓘ, and here shall your proud wavesⓘ be stayed»?

המימיך צוית בקר ידעתה שחר ידעתה השחר מקמו
ἦ ἐπὶ σοῦ συντέταχα φέγγος πρωινόν, ἑωσφόρος δὲ εἶδεν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ τάξιν
Have you ever, since the days of your life, commanded the morningⓘ to rise, have you assigned to the dawnⓘ its place,

לאחז בכנפות הארץ וינערו רש ממנה
ἐπιλαβέσθαι πτερύγων γῆς, ἐκτινάξαι ἀσεβεῖς ἐξ αὐτῆς;
that it might seize the skirts of the earthⓘ and shake the wicked out of itⓘ?
14
תתהפך כחמר חותם ויתיצבו כמו לבוש
ἦ σὺ λαβὼν γῆν πηλὸν ἔπλασας ζῷον καὶ λαλητὸν αὐτὸν ἔθου ἐπὶ γῆς;
The earth takes shape like clay under a sealⓘ, and all things stand forth like a garmentⓘ.

וימנע מרש אורם וזרוע רמה תשבר
ἀφεῖλας δὲ ἀπὸ ἀσεβῶν τὸ φῶς, βραχίονα δὲ ὑπερηφάνων συνέτριψας;
From the wicked their lightⓘ is withheld, and the uplifted armⓘ is broken.

הבאת עד נבכי ים ובחקר תהום התהלכת
ἦλθες δὲ ἐπὶ πηγὴν θαλάσσης, ἐν δὲ ἴχνεσιν ἀβύσσου περιεπάτησας;
Have you entered into the springs of the seaⓘ, have you walked in the recesses of the deepⓘ?

הנגלו לך שערי מות ושערי צלמות תראה
ἀνοίγονται δέ σοι φόβῳ πύλαι θανάτου, πυλωροὶ δὲ ᾅδου ἰδόντες σε ἔπτηξαν;
Have the gates of deathⓘ been opened to you, have you seen the gates of deep shadowⓘ?

התבננת עד רחבי ארץ הגד אם ידעת כלה
νενουθέτησαι δὲ τὸ εὖρος τῆς ὑπ’ οὐρανόν; ἀνάγγειλον δή μοι πόση τίς ἐστιν.
Have you comprehended the breadth of the earthⓘ? Tell me, if you know all this.

אי זה הדרך ישכן אור וחשך אי זה מקמו
ποίᾳ δὲ γῇ αὐλίζεται τὸ φῶς, σκότους δὲ ποῖος ὁ τόπος;
Where is the way where light dwellsⓘ, and as for darkness, where is its place,
20
כי תקחנו אל גבולו וכי תבין נתיבות ביתו
εἰ ἀγάγοις με εἰς ὅρια αὐτῶν; εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπίστασαι τρίβους αὐτῶν;
that you might lead it to its territoryⓘ?
21
ידעת כי אז תולד ומספר ימיך רבים
οἶδα ἄρα ὅτι τότε γεγέννησαι, ἀριθμὸς δὲ ἐτῶν σου πολύς.
Surely you know, for you were already born thenⓘ, and great is the number of your days!
22
הבאת אל אצרות שלג ואצרות ברד תראה
ἦλθες δὲ ἐπὶ θησαυροὺς χιόνος, θησαυροὺς δὲ χαλάζης ἑόρακας.
Have you entered into the storehouses of the snowⓘ, have you seen the storehouses of hailⓘ,

אשר חשכתי לעת צר ליום קרב ומלחמה
ἀπόκειται δέ σοι εἰς ὥραν ἐχθρῶν, εἰς ἡμέραν πολέμου καὶ μάχης.
which I have reserved for the time of distressⓘ, for the day of battleⓘ?
24
אי זה הדרך יחלק אור יפץ קדים עלי ארץ
πόθεν δὲ ἐκπορεύεται πάχνη ἢ διασκεδάννυται νότος εἰς τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανόν;
By what way is the lightⓘ dispersed, by what path is the east windⓘ scattered over the earth?

מי פלג לשטף תעלה ודרך לחזיז קלות
τίς δὲ ἡτοίμασεν ὑετῷ λάβρῳ ῥύσιν, ὁδὸν δὲ κυδοιμῶν
Who has cut a channel for the torrential rainⓘ and a way for the thunderboltⓘ,

להמטיר על ארץ לא איש מדבר לא אדם בו
τοῦ ὑετίσαι ἐπὶ γῆν, οὗ οὐκ ἀνήρ, ἔρημον, οὗ οὐχ ὑπάρχει ἄνθρωπος ἐν αὐτῇ,
to bring rainⓘ on a land where no one lives, on the wilderness where no human being is,
27
להשביע שאה ומשאה ולהצמיח מצא דשא
τοῦ χορτάσαι ἄβατον καὶ ἀοίκητον καὶ τοῦ ἐκβλαστῆσαι ἔξοδον χλόης;
to satisfy the desolate wasteⓘ and to make the tender grassⓘ spring forth?

היש למטר אב או מי הוליד אגלי טל
τίς ἐστιν ὑετοῦ πατήρ; τίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ τετοκὼς βώλους δρόσου;
Has the rain a fatherⓘ, or who begot the drops of dewⓘ?

מבטן מי יצא הקרח וכפר שמים מי ילדו
ἐκ γαστρὸς δὲ τίνος ἐκπορεύεται ὁ κρύσταλλος; πάχνην δὲ ἐν οὐρανῷ τίς τέτοκεν,
From whose wombⓘ has the iceⓘ come forth, and the hoarfrost of heavenⓘ — who has given it birth?
30
כאבן מים יתחבאו ופני תהום יתלכדו
ἣ καταβαίνει ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ῥέον; πρόσωπον δὲ ἀβύσσου τίς ἔπηξεν;
The waters become hard as stoneⓘ, and the face of the deepⓘ is frozen.

התקשר מעדנות כימה או משכות כסיל תפתח
συνῆκας δὲ δεσμὸν Πλειάδος καὶ φραγμὸν Ὠρίωνος ἤνοιξας;
Can you bind the chains of the Pleiadesⓘ, or loose the cords of Orionⓘ?
32
התציא מזרות בעתו ועיש על בניה תנחם
ἦ διανοίξεις μαζουρωθ ἐν καιρῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἕσπερον ἐπὶ κόμης αὐτοῦ ἄξεις αὐτά;
Can you bring forth the constellationsⓘ in their season, and do you guide the Bearⓘ with her young?

הידעת חקות שמים אם תשים משטרו בארץ
ἐπίστασαι δὲ τροπὰς οὐρανοῦ ἢ τὰ ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν ὁμοθυμαδὸν γινόμενα;
Do you know the ordinances of the heavensⓘ, can you establish their dominion over the earthⓘ?

התרים לעב קולך ושפעת מים תכסך
καλέσεις δὲ νέφος φωνῇ, καὶ τρόμῳ ὕδατος λάβρῳ ὑπακούσεταί σου;
Can you lift up your voice to the cloudsⓘ so that a flood of waters may cover you?
35
התשלח ברקים וילכו ויאמרו לך הננו
ἀποστελεῖς δὲ κεραυνοὺς καὶ πορεύσονται; ἐροῦσιν δέ σοι Τί ἐστιν;
Can you send forth lightning boltsⓘ that they may go and say to you «here we areⓘ»?

מי שת בטחות חכמה או מי נתן לשכוי בינה
τίς δὲ ἔδωκεν γυναιξὶν ὑφάσματος σοφίαν ἢ ποικιλτικὴν ἐπιστήμην;
Who placed wisdom in the hidden partsⓘ, who gave understandingⓘ?

מי יספר שחקים בחכמה ונבלי שמים מי ישכיב
τίς δὲ ὁ ἀριθμῶν νέφη σοφίᾳ, οὐρανὸν δὲ εἰς γῆν ἔκλινεν;
Who can number the clouds with wisdomⓘ, or who can tilt the waterskins of heavenⓘ,

בצקת עפר למוצק ורגבים ידבקו
κέχυται δὲ ὥσπερ γῆ κονία, κεκόλληκα δὲ αὐτὸν ὥσπερ λίθῳ κύβον.
when the dust runs into a massⓘ and the clods cleave togetherⓘ?
39
התצוד ללביא טרף וחית כפירים תמלא
θηρεύσεις δὲ λέουσιν βοράν, ψυχὰς δὲ δρακόντων ἐμπλήσεις;
Do you hunt prey for the lionessⓘ, do you satisfy the appetite of the young lionsⓘ,
40
כי ישחו במעונות ישבו בסכה למו ארב
δεδοίκασιν γὰρ ἐν κοίταις αὐτῶν, κάθηνται δὲ ἐν ὕλαις ἐνεδρεύοντες.
when they crouch in their densⓘ, lie in ambush in the thicketⓘ?
41
מי יכין לערב צידו כי ילדו ילדיו אל אל ישועו יתעו לבלי אכל
τίς δὲ ἡτοίμασεν κόρακι βοράν; νεοσσοὶ γὰρ αὐτοῦ πρὸς κύριον κεκράγασιν πλανώμενοι τὰ σῖτα ζητοῦντες.
Who provides the raven its foodⓘ, when its young ones cry to Godⓘ and wander about for lack of food?
