כי תשב ללחום את מושל בין תבין את אשר לפניך
ἐὰν καθίσῃς δειπνεῖν ἐπὶ τραπέζης δυναστῶν, νοητῶς νόει τὰ παρατιθέμενά σοι
When you sit down to eat with a ⓘ, a ruler who holds command, consider carefully what is set before you,

ושמת שכין בלעך אם בעל נפש אתה
καὶ ἐπίβαλλε τὴν χεῖρά σου εἰδὼς ὅτι τοιαῦτά σε δεῖ παρασκευάσαι·
and put a ⓘ if you are a man of voracious appetite.

אל תתאו למטעמותיו והוא לחם כזבים
εἰ δὲ ἀπληστότερος εἶ, μὴ ἐπιθύμει τῶν ἐδεσμάτων αὐτοῦ, ταῦτα γὰρ ἔχεται ζωῆς ψευδοῦς.
Do not ⓘ his ⓘ, for they are ⓘ.

אל תיגע להעשיר מבינתך חדל
μὴ παρεκτείνου πένης ὢν πλουσίῳ, τῇ δὲ σῇ ἐννοίᾳ ἀπόσχου·
Do not wear yourself out to grow rich; for your own discernment's sake, ⓘ.

התעוף התעיף עיניך בו ואיננו כי עשה יעשה לו כנפים כנשר ועיף יעוף השמים
ἐὰν ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτόν, οὐδαμοῦ φανεῖται, κατεσκεύασται γὰρ αὐτῷ πτέρυγες ὥσπερ ἀετοῦ, καὶ ὑποστρέφει εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ προεστηκότος αὐτοῦ.
Let your eyes fly toward wealth, and it is gone: it makes ⓘ and flies away toward the sky.

אל תלחם את לחם רע עין ואל תתאו תתאיו למטעמתיו
μὴ συνδείπνει ἀνδρὶ βασκάνῳ μηδὲ ἐπιθύμει τῶν βρωμάτων αὐτοῦ·
Do not eat the bread of the man with an ⓘ, and do not covet his delicacies,

כי כמו שער בנפשו כן הוא אכל ושתה יאמר לך ולבו בל עמך
ὃν τρόπον γὰρ εἴ τις καταπίοι τρίχα, οὕτως ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει.
for as one who ⓘ, so is he: «Eat and drink», he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

פתך אכלת תקיאנה ושחת דבריך הנעימים
μηδὲ πρὸς σὲ εἰσαγάγῃς αὐτὸν καὶ φάγῃς τὸν ψωμόν σου μετ’ αὐτοῦ· ἐξεμέσει γὰρ αὐτὸν καὶ λυμανεῖται τοὺς λόγους σου τοὺς καλούς.
The morsel you have eaten you will vomit up, and you will have wasted your kind words.

באזני כסיל אל תדבר כי יבוז לשכל מליך
εἰς ὦτα ἄφρονος μηδὲν λέγε, μήποτε μυκτηρίσῃ τοὺς συνετοὺς λόγους σου.
In the ears of a ⓘ do not speak, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

אל תסג גבול עולם ובשדי יתומים אל תבא
μὴ μεταθῇς ὅρια αἰώνια, εἰς δὲ κτῆμα ὀρφανῶν μὴ εἰσέλθῃς·
Do not ⓘ, and into the fields of orphans do not enter,
11
כי גאלם חזק הוא יריב את ריבם אתך
ὁ γὰρ λυτρούμενος αὐτοὺς κύριος κραταιός ἐστιν καὶ κρινεῖ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτῶν μετὰ σοῦ.
for their ⓘ is strong: he will plead their cause against you.

הביאה למוסר לבך ואזנך לאמרי דעת
δὸς εἰς παιδείαν τὴν καρδίαν σου, τὰ δὲ ὦτά σου ἑτοίμασον λόγοις αἰσθήσεως.
Bring to ⓘ your heart, and your ears to words of knowledge.

אל תמנע מנער מוסר כי תכנו בשבט לא ימות
μὴ ἀπόσχῃ νήπιον παιδεύειν, ὅτι ἐὰν πατάξῃς αὐτὸν ῥάβδῳ, οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ·
Do not withhold ⓘ from a child: if you strike him with the ⓘ, he will not die;

אתה בשבט תכנו ונפשו משאול תציל
σὺ μὲν γὰρ πατάξεις αὐτὸν ῥάβδῳ, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐκ θανάτου ῥύσῃ.
you strike him with the rod, but his soul from ⓘ you will save.

בני אם חכם לבך ישמח לבי גם אני
υἱέ, ἐὰν σοφὴ γένηταί σου ἡ καρδία, εὐφρανεῖς καὶ τὴν ἐμὴν καρδίαν,
My son, if your heart becomes wise, my heart too will rejoice;
16
ותעלזנה כליותי בדבר שפתיך מישרים
καὶ ἐνδιατρίψει λόγοις τὰ σὰ χείλη πρὸς τὰ ἐμὰ χείλη, ἐὰν ὀρθὰ ὦσιν.
my ⓘ will exult when your lips speak upright things.

אל יקנא לבך בחטאים כי אם ביראת יהוה כל היום
μὴ ζηλούτω ἡ καρδία σου ἁμαρτωλούς, ἀλλὰ ἐν φόβῳ κυρίου ἴσθι ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν·
Let not your heart envy sinners, but be in the ⓘ all the day;
18
כי אם יש אחרית ותקותך לא תכרת
ἐὰν γὰρ τηρήσῃς αὐτά, ἔσται σοι ἔκγονα, ἡ δὲ ἐλπίς σου οὐκ ἀποστήσεται.
for there is a ⓘ, and your hope will not be cut off.

שמע אתה בני וחכם ואשר בדרך לבך
ἄκουε, υἱέ, καὶ σοφὸς γίνου καὶ κατεύθυνε ἐννοίας σῆς καρδίας·
Hear, my son, and become wise, and set your heart on the right path.
20
אל תהי בסבאי יין בזללי בשר למו
μὴ ἴσθι οἰνοπότης μηδὲ ἐκτείνου συμβολαῖς κρεῶν τε ἀγορασμοῖς·
Do not be among the ⓘ, among the gluttonous devourers of meat,
21
כי סבא וזולל יורש וקרעים תלביש נומה
πᾶς γὰρ μέθυσος καὶ πορνοκόπος πτωχεύσει, καὶ ἐνδύσεται διερρηγμένα καὶ ῥακώδη πᾶς ὑπνώδης.
for the drunkard and the ⓘ will come to poverty, and the sluggard will be clothed in rags.
22
שמע לאביך זה ילדך ואל תבוז כי זקנה אמך
ἄκουε, υἱέ, πατρὸς τοῦ γεννήσαντός σε καὶ μὴ καταφρόνει ὅτι γεγήρακέν σου ἡ μήτηρ.
Hear your father, the one who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
