The Lament over the King of Babylon

כי ירחם יהוה את יעקב ובחר עוד בישראל והניחם על אדמתם ונלוה הגר עליהם ונספחו על בית יעקב
Καὶ ἐλεήσει κύριος τὸν Ιακωβ καὶ ἐκλέξεται ἔτι τὸν Ισραηλ, καὶ ἀναπαύσονται ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν, καὶ ὁ γιώρας προστεθήσεται πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ προστεθήσεται πρὸς τὸν οἶκον Ιακωβ,
For he will have mercy — the Tetragrammaton — on Jacob and ⓘ Israel, and will cause them to rest on their own land, and the ⓘ will join them and attach himself to the house of Jacob.

ולקחום עמים והביאום אל מקומם והתנחלום בית ישראל על אדמת יהוה לעבדים ולשפחות והיו שבים לשביהם ורדו בנגשיהם
καὶ λήμψονται αὐτοὺς ἔθνη καὶ εἰσάξουσιν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῶν, καὶ κατακληρονομήσουσιν καὶ πληθυνθήσονται ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς δούλους καὶ δούλας· καὶ ἔσονται αἰχμάλωτοι οἱ αἰχμαλωτεύσαντες αὐτούς, καὶ κυριευθήσονται οἱ κυριεύσαντες αὐτῶν.
And the peoples will take them and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will receive them as an inheritance on the land of the Tetragrammaton as male servants and female servants; and ⓘ and will rule over their oppressors.

והיה ביום הניח יהוה לך מעצבך ומרגזך ומן העבדה הקשה אשר עבד בך
Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀναπαύσει σε ὁ θεὸς ἐκ τῆς ὀδύνης καὶ τοῦ θυμοῦ σου καὶ τῆς δουλείας σου τῆς σκληρᾶς, ἧς ἐδούλευσας αὐτοῖς.
And it shall come to pass on the day when the Tetragrammaton gives you ⓘ from your pain, from your anguish, and from the harsh ⓘ that was imposed upon you,

ונשאת המשל הזה על מלך בבל ואמרת איך שבת נגש שבתה מדהבה
καὶ λήμψῃ τὸν θρῆνον τοῦτον ἐπὶ τὸν βασιλέα Βαβυλῶνος καὶ ἐρεῖς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ Πῶς ἀναπέπαυται ὁ ἀπαιτῶν καὶ ἀναπέπαυται ὁ ἐπισπουδαστής;
you will take up this ⓘ concerning the ⓘ and say: «How the ⓘ has ceased, how the ⓘ has ceased!

שבר יהוה מטה רשעים שבט משלים
συνέτριψεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν ζυγὸν τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν, τὸν ζυγὸν τῶν ἀρχόντων·
The Tetragrammaton has ⓘ the staff of the wicked, the scepter of rulers,

מכה עמים בעברה מכת בלתי סרה רדה באף גוים מרדף בלי חשך
πατάξας ἔθνος θυμῷ πληγῇ ἀνιάτῳ, παίων ἔθνος πληγὴν θυμοῦ, ἣ οὐκ ἐφείσατο,
that struck peoples in fury, with blows unceasing, that subjected nations in anger with ⓘ.

נחה שקטה כל הארץ פצחו רנה
ἀνεπαύσατο πεποιθώς. πᾶσα ἡ γῆ βοᾷ μετ’ εὐφροσύνης,
The whole earth is at rest and quiet; ⓘ.
8
גם ברושים שמחו לך ארזי לבנון מאז שכבת לא יעלה הכרת עלינו
καὶ τὰ ξύλα τοῦ Λιβάνου εὐφράνθησαν ἐπὶ σοὶ καὶ ἡ κέδρος τοῦ Λιβάνου Ἀφ οὗ σὺ κεκοίμησαι, οὐκ ἀνέβη ὁ κόπτων ἡμᾶς.
Even the ⓘ rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon: «Since you lay down, no one comes up to fell us».

שאול מתחת רגזה לך לקראת בואך עורר לך רפאים כל עתודי ארץ הקים מכסאותם כל מלכי גוים
ὁ ᾅδης κάτωθεν ἐπικράνθη συναντήσας σοι, συνηγέρθησάν σοι πάντες οἱ γίγαντες οἱ ἄρξαντες τῆς γῆς οἱ ἐγείραντες ἐκ τῶν θρόνων αὐτῶν πάντας βασιλεῖς ἐθνῶν.
ⓘ beneath is stirred for you, to meet you at your coming; it rouses for you the ⓘ, all the great ones of the earth; it makes all the kings of the nations rise from their thrones.

כלם יענו ויאמרו אליך גם אתה חלית כמונו אלינו נמשלת
πάντες ἀποκριθήσονται καὶ ἐροῦσίν σοι Καὶ σὺ ἑάλως ὥσπερ καὶ ἡμεῖς, ἐν ἡμῖν δὲ κατελογίσθης.
All of them will speak and say to you: «You too have become weak as we are; you have become like us!»

הורד שאול גאונך המית נבליך תחתיך יצע רמה ומכסיך תולעה
κατέβη δὲ εἰς ᾅδου ἡ δόξα σου, ἡ πολλή σου εὐφροσύνη· ὑποκάτω σου στρώσουσιν σῆψιν, καὶ τὸ κατακάλυμμά σου σκώληξ.
Your ⓘ has been brought down to Sheòl, the sound of your ⓘ; maggots are spread as a bed beneath you, and ⓘ cover you.

איך נפלת משמים הילל בן שחר נגדעת לארץ חולש על גוים
πῶς ἐξέπεσεν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ὁ ἑωσφόρος ὁ πρωῒ ἀνατέλλων; συνετρίβη εἰς τὴν γῆν ὁ ἀποστέλλων πρὸς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη.
How you have fallen from heaven, ⓘ, cut down to the ground, you who ⓘ the nations!

ואתה אמרת בלבבך השמים אעלה ממעל לכוכבי אל ארים כסאי ואשב בהר מועד בירכתי צפון
σὺ δὲ εἶπας ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ σου Εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀναβήσομαι, ἐπάνω τῶν ἄστρων τοῦ οὐρανοῦ θήσω τὸν θρόνον μου, καθιῶ ἐν ὄρει ὑψηλῷ ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη τὰ ὑψηλὰ τὰ πρὸς βορρᾶν,
You said in your heart: «ⓘ, above the ⓘ I will raise my throne, I will sit on the ⓘ, in the far reaches of the north.

אעלה על במתי עב אדמה לעליון
ἀναβήσομαι ἐπάνω τῶν νεφελῶν, ἔσομαι ὅμοιος τῷ ὑψίστῳ.
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will be ⓘ».
15
אך אל שאול תורד אל ירכתי בור
νῦν δὲ εἰς ᾅδου καταβήσῃ καὶ εἰς τὰ θεμέλια τῆς γῆς.
But you have been brought down to Sheòl, to the ⓘ.
16
ראיך אליך ישגיחו אליך יתבוננו הזה האיש מרגיז הארץ מרעיש ממלכות
οἱ ἰδόντες σε θαυμάσουσιν ἐπὶ σοὶ καὶ ἐροῦσιν Οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ παροξύνων τὴν γῆν, σείων βασιλεῖς;
Those who see you will stare at you, will ponder over you: «Is this the ⓘ who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms,

שם תבל כמדבר ועריו הרס אסיריו לא פתח ביתה
ὁ θεὶς τὴν οἰκουμένην ὅλην ἔρημον καὶ τὰς πόλεις καθεῖλεν, τοὺς ἐν ἐπαγωγῇ οὐκ ἔλυσεν.
who made the world like a desert, who overthrew its cities, who ⓘ?»

כל מלכי גוים כלם שכבו בכבוד איש בביתו
πάντες οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν ἐκοιμήθησαν ἐν τιμῇ, ἄνθρωπος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ·
All the kings of the nations lie in glory, every one of them in his own house;

ואתה השלכת מקברך כנצר נתעב לבוש הרגים מטעני חרב יורדי אל אבני בור כפגר מובס
σὺ δὲ ῥιφήσῃ ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσιν ὡς νεκρὸς ἐβδελυγμένος μετὰ πολλῶν τεθνηκότων ἐκκεκεντημένων μαχαίραις καταβαινόντων εἰς ᾅδου. ὃν τρόπον ἱμάτιον ἐν αἵματι πεφυρμένον οὐκ ἔσται καθαρόν,
but you are cast ⓘ like a ⓘ, covered with the slain, those pierced by the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, like a trampled corpse.
20
לא תחד אתם בקבורה כי ארצך שחת עמך הרגת לא יקרא לעולם זרע מרעים
οὕτως οὐδὲ σὺ ἔσῃ καθαρός, διότι τὴν γῆν μου ἀπώλεσας καὶ τὸν λαόν μου ἀπέκτεινας· οὐ μὴ μείνῃς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα χρόνον, σπέρμα πονηρόν.
You will not be joined with them in burial, because you have ruined your land and slaughtered your people; may the ⓘ never be named again.

הכינו לבניו מטבח בעון אבותם בל יקמו וירשו ארץ ומלאו פני תבל ערים
ἑτοίμασον τὰ τέκνα σου σφαγῆναι ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις τοῦ πατρός σου, ἵνα μὴ ἀναστῶσιν καὶ τὴν γῆν κληρονομήσωσιν καὶ ἐμπλήσωσι τὴν γῆν πόλεων.
Prepare a ⓘ for his sons, because of the guilt of their fathers, lest they rise to possess the earth and fill the face of the world with cities.
22
וקמתי עליהם נאם יהוה צבאות והכרתי לבבל שם ושאר ונין ונכד נאם יהוה
Καὶ ἐπαναστήσομαι αὐτοῖς, λέγει κύριος σαβαωθ, καὶ ἀπολῶ αὐτῶν ὄνομα καὶ κατάλειμμα καὶ σπέρμα – τάδε λέγει κύριος –
«I will rise up against them — oracle of the ⓘ — and I will cut off from Babylon name and remnant, offspring and posterity — oracle of the Tetragrammaton —.

ושמתיה למורש קפד ואגמי מים וטאטאתיה במטאטא השמד נאם יהוה צבאות
καὶ θήσω τὴν Βαβυλωνίαν ἔρημον ὥστε κατοικεῖν ἐχίνους, καὶ ἔσται εἰς οὐδέν· καὶ θήσω αὐτὴν πηλοῦ βάραθρον εἰς ἀπώλειαν. –
I will make it a possession of the ⓘ and pools of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction — oracle of the Tetragrammaton of hosts».

נשבע יהוה צבאות לאמר אם לא כאשר דמיתי כן היתה וכאשר יעצתי היא תקום
τάδε λέγει κύριος σαβαωθ Ὃν τρόπον εἴρηκα, οὕτως ἔσται, καὶ ὃν τρόπον βεβούλευμαι, οὕτως μενεῖ,
The Tetragrammaton of hosts has sworn: «Surely, as I have ⓘ, so it shall be, and as I have ⓘ, so it shall stand:
25
לשבר אשור בארצי ועל הרי אבוסנו וסר מעליהם עלו וסבלו מעל שכמו יסור
τοῦ ἀπολέσαι τοὺς Ἀσσυρίους ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς τῆς ἐμῆς καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ὀρέων μου, καὶ ἔσονται εἰς καταπάτημα, καὶ ἀφαιρεθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὁ ζυγὸς αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸ κῦδος αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῶν ὤμων ἀφαιρεθήσεται.
I will break ⓘ in my land, and on my mountains I will trample him under foot; his yoke shall be removed from them, and his burden shall be removed from their shoulders».

זאת העצה היעוצה על כל הארץ וזאת היד הנטויה על כל הגוים
αὕτη ἡ βουλή, ἣν βεβούλευται κύριος ἐπὶ τὴν οἰκουμένην ὅλην, καὶ αὕτη ἡ χεὶρ ἡ ὑψηλὴ ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τῆς οἰκουμένης.
This is the ⓘ purposed for the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations.
27
כי יהוה צבאות יעץ ומי יפר וידו הנטויה ומי ישיבנה
ἃ γὰρ ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἅγιος βεβούλευται, τίς διασκεδάσει; καὶ τὴν χεῖρα τὴν ὑψηλὴν τίς ἀποστρέψει;
For the Tetragrammaton of hosts has purposed, and ⓘ? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?
28
בשנת מות המלך אחז היה המשא הזה
Τοῦ ἔτους, οὗ ἀπέθανεν Αχαζ ὁ βασιλεύς, ἐγενήθη τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο.
In the year of the ⓘ this ⓘ was proclaimed.
29
אל תשמחי פלשת כלך כי נשבר שבט מכך כי משרש נחש יצא צפע ופריו שרף מעופף
Μὴ εὐφρανθείητε, πάντες οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι, συνετρίβη γὰρ ὁ ζυγὸς τοῦ παίοντος ὑμᾶς· ἐκ γὰρ σπέρματος ὄφεων ἐξελεύσεται ἔκγονα ἀσπίδων, καὶ τὰ ἔκγονα αὐτῶν ἐξελεύσονται ὄφεις πετόμενοι.
Do not rejoice, ⓘ in its entirety, because the rod that struck you is broken; for from the root of the serpent will come out a ⓘ, and its fruit will be a flying serpent.
30
ורעו בכורי דלים ואביונים לבטח ירבצו והמתי ברעב שרשך ושאריתך יהרג
καὶ βοσκηθήσονται πτωχοὶ δι’ αὐτοῦ, πτωχοὶ δὲ ἄνδρες ἐπ’ εἰρήνης ἀναπαύσονται· ἀνελεῖ δὲ λιμῷ τὸ σπέρμα σου καὶ τὸ κατάλειμμά σου ἀνελεῖ.
The ⓘ will graze, and the needy will lie down in safety; but I will kill your root with famine, and your remnant will be slain.

הילילי שער זעקי עיר נמוג פלשת כלך כי מצפון עשן בא ואין בודד במועדיו
ὀλολύζετε, πύλαι πόλεων, κεκραγέτωσαν πόλεις τεταραγμέναι, οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι πάντες, ὅτι καπνὸς ἀπὸ βορρᾶ ἔρχεται, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν τοῦ εἶναι.
Wail, O gate! Cry out, O city! You are dissolved in fear, all Philistia, for from the ⓘ a smoke is coming, and there is no straggler in his ranks.
32
ומה יענה מלאכי גוי כי יהוה יסד ציון ובה יחסו עניי עמו
καὶ τί ἀποκριθήσονται βασιλεῖς ἐθνῶν; ὅτι κύριος ἐθεμελίωσεν Σιων, καὶ δι’ αὐτοῦ σωθήσονται οἱ ταπεινοὶ τοῦ λαοῦ.
And what will one answer the messengers of the nations? That «the Tetragrammaton has ⓘ, and in her the ⓘ take refuge».
