ויאמר יהוה אל משה ראיתי את העם הזה והנה עם קשה ערף הוא

ועתה הניחה לי ויחר אפי בהם ואכלם ואעשה אותך לגוי גדול
καὶ νῦν ἔασόν με καὶ θυμωθεὶς ὀργῇ εἰς αὐτοὺς ἐκτρίψω αὐτοὺς καὶ ποιήσω σὲ εἰς ἔθνος μέγα.
«And now let me beⓘ, and let my wrath blaze against them and devour them; and I will make of you a great peopleⓘ».

ויחל משה את פני יהוה אלהיו ויאמר למה יהוה יחרה אפך בעמך אשר הוצאת מארץ מצרים בכח גדול וביד חזקה
καὶ ἐδεήθη Μωϋσῆς ἔναντι κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Ἵνα τί, κύριε, θυμοῖ ὀργῇ εἰς τὸν λαόν σου, οὓς ἐξήγαγες ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ἐν ἰσχύι μεγάλῃ καὶ ἐν τῷ βραχίονί σου τῷ ὑψηλῷ;
And Moshèh entreatedⓘ the face of the Tetragrammatonⓘ his God and said: «Why, O Tetragrammaton, does your wrath blaze against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong handⓘ?».

למה יאמרו מצרים לאמר ברעה הוציאם להרג אתם בהרים ולכלתם מעל פני האדמה שוב מחרון אפך והנחם על הרעה לעמך
μήποτε εἴπωσιν οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι λέγοντες Μετὰ πονηρίας ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ἀποκτεῖναι ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσιν καὶ ἐξαναλῶσαι αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς. παῦσαι τῆς ὀργῆς τοῦ θυμοῦ σου καὶ ἵλεως γενοῦ ἐπὶ τῇ κακίᾳ τοῦ λαοῦ σου
«Why should the Egyptiansⓘ say: With evil intent he brought them out, to kill them on the mountains and to wipe them out from the face of the adamàhⓘ — turnⓘ from the heat of your wrath and relentⓘ of the evil toward your people».

זכר לאברהם ליצחק ולישראל עבדיך אשר נשבעת להם בך ותדבר אלהם ארבה את זרעכם ככוכבי השמים וכל הארץ הזאת אשר אמרתי אתן לזרעכם ונחלו לעלם
μνησθεὶς Αβρααμ καὶ Ισαακ καὶ Ιακωβ τῶν σῶν οἰκετῶν, οἷς ὤμοσας κατὰ σεαυτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησας πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων Πολυπληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα ὑμῶν ὡσεὶ τὰ ἄστρα τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τῷ πλήθει, καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ταύτην, ἣν εἶπας δοῦναι τῷ σπέρματι αὐτῶν, καὶ καθέξουσιν αὐτὴν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
«Rememberⓘ Avrahàm, Yitzhàq and Yisraèlⓘ, your servants, to whom you swore by yourselfⓘ and said to them: I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your offspring — and they shall inherit it foreverⓘ».

וינחם יהוה על הרעה אשר דבר לעשות לעמו
καὶ ἱλάσθη κύριος περὶ τῆς κακίας, ἧς εἶπεν ποιῆσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ.
And the Tetragrammatonⓘ relentedⓘ of the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

ויפן וירד משה מן ההר ושני לחת העדת בידו לחת כתבים משני עבריהם מזה ומזה הם כתבים
Καὶ ἀποστρέψας Μωϋσῆς κατέβη ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄρους, καὶ αἱ δύο πλάκες τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ, πλάκες λίθιναι καταγεγραμμέναι ἐξ ἀμφοτέρων τῶν μερῶν αὐτῶν, ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν ἦσαν γεγραμμέναι·
And Moshèh turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the testimonyⓘ were in his hand — tablets written on their two sides, on this side and on that they were written.

והלחת מעשה אלהים המה והמכתב מכתב אלהים הוא חרות על הלחת
καὶ αἱ πλάκες ἔργον θεοῦ ἦσαν, καὶ ἡ γραφὴ γραφὴ θεοῦ ἐστιν κεκολαμμένη ἐν ταῖς πλαξίν.
And the tablets were the work of Godⓘ, and the writing was the writing of God, engravedⓘ on the tablets.

וישמע יהושע את קול העם ברעה ויאמר אל משה קול מלחמה במחנה
καὶ ἀκούσας Ἰησοῦς τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ λαοῦ κραζόντων λέγει πρὸς Μωυσῆν Φωνὴ πολέμου ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ.
And Yehoshùa'ⓘ heard the noise of the people in the uproar and said to Moshèh: «The sound of warⓘ in the camp!».

ויאמר אין קול ענות גבורה ואין קול ענות חלושה קול ענות אנכי שמע
καὶ λέγει Οὐκ ἔστιν φωνὴ ἐξαρχόντων κατ’ ἰσχὺν οὐδὲ φωνὴ ἐξαρχόντων τροπῆς, ἀλλὰ φωνὴν ἐξαρχόντων οἴνου ἐγὼ ἀκούω.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And he says: «It is not the voice of those who chant according to strengthⓘ, nor the voice of those who chant a defeatⓘ, but the voice of those who chant a song of wineⓘ I hear».—— Masoretic (MT) ——And he said: «It is not the voice of an answer of victory, nor the voice of an answer of defeat — it is a voice of answerⓘ that I hear».

ויהי כאשר קרב אל המחנה וירא את העגל ומחלת ויחר אף משה וישלך מידו מידיו את הלחת וישבר אתם תחת ההר
καὶ ἡνίκα ἤγγιζεν τῇ παρεμβολῇ, ὁρᾷ τὸν μόσχον καὶ τοὺς χορούς, καὶ ὀργισθεὶς θυμῷ Μωϋσῆς ἔρριψεν ἀπὸ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ τὰς δύο πλάκας καὶ συνέτριψεν αὐτὰς ὑπὸ τὸ ὄρος.
And it happened, as he drew near to the camp: he saw the calfⓘ and the dancingⓘ — and Moshèh's wrath blazed, and he hurled from his handsⓘ the tablets and shatteredⓘ them at the foot of the mountain.

ויקח את העגל אשר עשו וישרף באש ויטחן עד אשר דק ויזר על פני המים וישק את בני ישראל
καὶ λαβὼν τὸν μόσχον, ὃν ἐποίησαν, κατέκαυσεν αὐτὸν ἐν πυρὶ καὶ κατήλεσεν αὐτὸν λεπτὸν καὶ ἔσπειρεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ ἐπότισεν αὐτὸ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ.
And he took the calf that they had made, burned it in the fire, groundⓘ it until it was reduced to powder, scattered it on the surface of the water and made drinkⓘ the children of Israèl.

ויאמר משה אל אהרן מה עשה לך העם הזה כי הבאת עליו חטאה גדלה
καὶ εἶπεν Μωϋσῆς τῷ Ααρων Τί ἐποίησέν σοι ὁ λαὸς οὗτος, ὅτι ἐπήγαγες ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἁμαρτίαν μεγάλην;
And Moshèh said to Aharòn: «What did this people do to you, that you brought upon them a great sinⓘ?».

ויאמר אהרן אל יחר אף אדני אתה ידעת את העם כי ברע הוא
καὶ εἶπεν Ααρων πρὸς Μωυσῆν Μὴ ὀργίζου, κύριε· σὺ γὰρ οἶδας τὸ ὅρμημα τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου.
And Aharòn said: «Let not blazeⓘ the wrath of my lordⓘ; you know this people, that it is bent on evilⓘ».

ויאמרו לי עשה לנו אלהים אשר ילכו לפנינו כי זה משה האיש אשר העלנו מארץ מצרים לא ידענו מה היה לו
λέγουσιν γάρ μοι Ποίησον ἡμῖν θεούς, οἳ προπορεύσονται ἡμῶν· ὁ γὰρ Μωϋσῆς οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ὃς ἐξήγαγεν ἡμᾶς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, οὐκ οἴδαμεν, τί γέγονεν αὐτῷ.
«They said to me: Make us Elohìmⓘ to go before us; as for this Moshèh, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt — we do not know what has become of him».

ואמר להם למי זהב התפרקו ויתנו לי ואשלכהו באש ויצא העגל הזה
καὶ εἶπα αὐτοῖς Εἴ τινι ὑπάρχει χρυσία, περιέλεσθε. καὶ ἔδωκάν μοι· καὶ ἔρριψα εἰς τὸ πῦρ, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ μόσχος οὗτος.
«And I said to them: Whoever has gold, let him take it offⓘ — they gave it to me; I threw it into the fire and this calf came outⓘ».

וירא משה את העם כי פרע הוא כי פרעה אהרן לשמצה בקמיהם
καὶ ἰδὼν Μωϋσῆς τὸν λαὸν ὅτι διεσκέδασται – διεσκέδασεν γὰρ αὐτοὺς Ααρων, ἐπίχαρμα τοῖς ὑπεναντίοις αὐτῶν – ,
And Moshèh saw the people that they were run wildⓘ — for Aharòn had let them run wild to derisionⓘ among those who had risen against them.
26
ויעמד משה בשער המחנה ויאמר מי ליהוה אלי ויאספו אליו כל בני לוי
ἔστη δὲ Μωϋσῆς ἐπὶ τῆς πύλης τῆς παρεμβολῆς καὶ εἶπεν Τίς πρὸς κύριον; ἴτω πρός με. συνῆλθον οὖν πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ υἱοὶ Λευι.
And Moshèh stood at the gate of the camp and said: «Whoever is for the Tetragrammaton — to me!ⓘ». And all the children of Levì gathered to him.

ויאמר להם כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל שימו איש חרבו על ירכו עברו ושובו משער לשער במחנה והרגו איש את אחיו ואיש את רעהו ואיש את קרבו
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ Θέσθε ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ῥομφαίαν ἐπὶ τὸν μηρὸν καὶ διέλθατε καὶ ἀνακάμψατε ἀπὸ πύλης ἐπὶ πύλην διὰ τῆς παρεμβολῆς καὶ ἀποκτείνατε ἕκαστος τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἕκαστος τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἕκαστος τὸν ἔγγιστα αὐτοῦ.
And he said to them: «Thus says the Tetragrammatonⓘ, God of Israèl: Let each one gird his sword on his thigh — pass back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and let each one kill his brotherⓘ, each one his companion, each one his neighbor».

ויעשו בני לוי כדבר משה ויפל מן העם ביום ההוא כשלשת אלפי איש
καὶ ἐποίησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Λευι καθὰ ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς Μωϋσῆς, καὶ ἔπεσαν ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ εἰς τρισχιλίους ἄνδρας.
And the children of Levì did according to the word of Moshèh; and there fell of the people on that day about three thousand menⓘ.

ויאמר משה מלאו ידכם היום ליהוה כי איש בבנו ובאחיו ולתת עליכם היום ברכה
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Μωϋσῆς Ἐπληρώσατε τὰς χεῖρας ὑμῶν σήμερον κυρίῳ, ἕκαστος ἐν τῷ υἱῷ ἢ τῷ ἀδελφῷ, δοθῆναι ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς εὐλογίαν.
And Moshèh said: «Fill your hands todayⓘ for the Tetragrammatonⓘ — each one for his son and for his brother — that blessingⓘ may come upon you today».

ויהי ממחרת ויאמר משה אל העם אתם חטאתם חטאה גדלה ועתה אעלה אל יהוה אולי אכפרה בעד חטאתכם
Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὴν αὔριον εἶπεν Μωϋσῆς πρὸς τὸν λαόν Ὑμεῖς ἡμαρτήκατε ἁμαρτίαν μεγάλην· καὶ νῦν ἀναβήσομαι πρὸς τὸν θεόν, ἵνα ἐξιλάσωμαι περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας ὑμῶν.
And it happened the next day: Moshèh said to the people: «You have sinned a great sin; and now I will go up to the Tetragrammatonⓘ — perhaps I will atoneⓘ for your sin».
31
וישב משה אל יהוה ויאמר אנא חטא העם הזה חטאה גדלה ויעשו להם אלהי זהב
ὑπέστρεψεν δὲ Μωϋσῆς πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπεν Δέομαι, κύριε· ἡμάρτηκεν ὁ λαὸς οὗτος ἁμαρτίαν μεγάλην καὶ ἐποίησαν ἑαυτοῖς θεοὺς χρυσοῦς.
And Moshèh returned to the Tetragrammatonⓘ and said: «Alas!ⓘ This people has sinned a great sin — they have made themselves an Elohìm of goldⓘ.
32
ועתה אם תשא חטאתם ואם אין מחני נא מספרך אשר כתבת
καὶ νῦν εἰ μὲν ἀφεῖς αὐτοῖς τὴν ἁμαρτίαν, ἄφες· εἰ δὲ μή, ἐξάλειψόν με ἐκ τῆς βίβλου σου, ἧς ἔγραψας.
And now, if you will bear their sinⓘ... and if not — blot me outⓘ from your bookⓘ that you have written».

ויאמר יהוה אל משה מי אשר חטא לי אמחנו מספרי
καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν Εἴ τις ἡμάρτηκεν ἐνώπιόν μου, ἐξαλείψω αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς βίβλου μου.
And the Tetragrammatonⓘ said to Moshèh: «Whoever has sinned against me — him I will blot out from my bookⓘ.
34
ועתה לך נחה את העם אל אשר דברתי לך הנה מלאכי ילך לפניך וביום פקדי ופקדתי עליהם חטאתם
νυνὶ δὲ βάδιζε κατάβηθι καὶ ὁδήγησον τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον εἰς τὸν τόπον, ὃν εἶπά σοι· ἰδοὺ ὁ ἄγγελός μου προπορεύεται πρὸ προσώπου σου· ᾗ δ’ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπισκέπτωμαι, ἐπάξω ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς τὴν ἁμαρτίαν αὐτῶν.
And now go, lead the peopleⓘ to the place of which I have spoken to you — behold, my angelⓘ will go before you; but on the day when I interveneⓘ I will punish upon them their sin».
35
ויגף יהוה את העם על אשר עשו את העגל אשר עשה אהרן
καὶ ἐπάταξεν κύριος τὸν λαὸν περὶ τῆς ποιήσεως τοῦ μόσχου, οὗ ἐποίησεν Ααρων.
And the Tetragrammatonⓘ struckⓘ the people for what they had done with the calf that Aharòn had madeⓘ.
