Exodus 5 — First audience before Pharaoh: let my people go

ואחר באו משה ואהרן ויאמרו אל פרעה כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל שלח את עמי ויחגו לי במדבר
Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰσῆλθεν Μωϋσῆς καὶ Ααρων πρὸς Φαραω καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ Ἐξαπόστειλον τὸν λαόν μου, ἵνα μοι ἑορτάσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ.
And after these things Moshèh and Aharòn came to Pharaoh and said: «Thus has spoken the ⓘ, the God of Israel: Let ⓘ go, that they may hold a ⓘ to me in the wilderness».

ויאמר פרעה מי יהוה אשר אשמע בקלו לשלח את ישראל לא ידעתי את יהוה וגם את ישראל לא אשלח
καὶ εἶπεν Φαραω Τίς ἐστιν οὗ εἰσακούσομαι τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ὥστε ἐξαποστεῖλαι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ; οὐκ οἶδα τὸν κύριον καὶ τὸν Ισραηλ οὐκ ἐξαποστέλλω.
And Pharaoh said: «Who is the ⓘ, that I should heed his voice to let ⓘ go? I have no ⓘ of the ⓘ, and Israel too I will not let go».

ויאמרו אלהי העברים נקרא עלינו נלכה נא דרך שלשת ימים במדבר ונזבחה ליהוה אלהינו פן יפגענו בדבר או בחרב
καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ὁ θεὸς τῶν Εβραίων προσκέκληται ἡμᾶς· πορευσόμεθα οὖν ὁδὸν τριῶν ἡμερῶν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον, ὅπως θύσωμεν τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν, μήποτε συναντήσῃ ἡμῖν θάνατος ἢ φόνος.
And they said: «The God of the ⓘ has ⓘ; let us go, we pray, ⓘ into the wilderness and sacrifice to the ⓘ our God, lest he ⓘ us with ⓘ».

ויאמר אלהם מלך מצרים למה משה ואהרן תפריעו את העם ממעשיו לכו לסבלתיכם
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου Ἵνα τί, Μωυσῆ καὶ Ααρων, διαστρέφετε τὸν λαόν μου ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων; ἀπέλθατε ἕκαστος ὑμῶν πρὸς τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And the king of Egypt said to them: «Why, Moshèh and Aharòn, do you ⓘ the my people from their labors? ⓘ».—— Masoretic (MT) ——And the king of Egypt said to them: «Why, Moshèh and Aharòn, do you ⓘ the people from their labors? Get back to your ⓘ».

ויאמר פרעה הן רבים עתה עם הארץ והשבתם אתם מסבלתם
καὶ εἶπεν Φαραω Ἰδοὺ νῦν πολυπληθεῖ ὁ λαός· μὴ οὖν καταπαύσωμεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων.
And Pharaoh said: «Behold, the people of the land are now numerous, and you would make them ⓘ from their forced labors!».

ויצו פרעה ביום ההוא את הנגשים בעם ואת שטריו לאמר
συνέταξεν δὲ Φαραω τοῖς ἐργοδιώκταις τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τοῖς γραμματεῦσιν λέγων
And Pharaoh commanded on that very day the ⓘ of the people and their ⓘ, saying:

לא תאספון לתת תבן לעם ללבן הלבנים כתמול שלשם הם ילכו וקששו להם תבן
Οὐκέτι προστεθήσεται διδόναι ἄχυρον τῷ λαῷ εἰς τὴν πλινθουργίαν καθάπερ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ἡμέραν· αὐτοὶ πορευέσθωσαν καὶ συναγαγέτωσαν ἑαυτοῖς ἄχυρα.
«You shall no longer give ⓘ to the people to make ⓘ as yesterday and the day before; let them go themselves and ⓘ the straw.

ואת מתכנת הלבנים אשר הם עשים תמול שלשם תשימו עליהם לא תגרעו ממנו כי נרפים הם על כן הם צעקים לאמר נלכה נזבחה לאלהינו
καὶ τὴν σύνταξιν τῆς πλινθείας, ἧς αὐτοὶ ποιοῦσιν καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, ἐπιβαλεῖς αὐτοῖς, οὐκ ἀφελεῖς οὐδέν· σχολάζουσιν γάρ· διὰ τοῦτο κεκράγασιν λέγοντες Πορευθῶμεν καὶ θύσωμεν τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν.
And the ⓘ of bricks that they make yesterday and the day before you shall lay upon them all the same, you shall not reduce it; for ⓘ they are, therefore they cry out, saying: Let us go, let us offer sacrifices to our God.

תכבד העבדה על האנשים ויעשו בה ואל ישעו בדברי שקר
βαρυνέσθω τὰ ἔργα τῶν ἀνθρώπων τούτων, καὶ μεριμνάτωσαν ταῦτα καὶ μὴ μεριμνάτωσαν ἐν λόγοις κενοῖς.
Let the work be made ⓘ upon these men, and let them be occupied with it, and let them not heed ⓘ».

ויצאו נגשי העם ושטריו ויאמרו אל העם לאמר כה אמר פרעה אינני נתן לכם תבן
κατέσπευδον δὲ αὐτοὺς οἱ ἐργοδιῶκται καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγοντες Τάδε λέγει Φαραω Οὐκέτι δίδωμι ὑμῖν ἄχυρα·
And the taskmasters of the people and their scribes went out and said to the people: «Thus has Pharaoh said: I will not give you straw.

אתם לכו קחו לכם תבן מאשר תמצאו כי אין נגרע מעבדתכם דבר
αὐτοὶ ὑμεῖς πορευόμενοι συλλέγετε ἑαυτοῖς ἄχυρα ὅθεν ἐὰν εὕρητε, οὐ γὰρ ἀφαιρεῖται ἀπὸ τῆς συντάξεως ὑμῶν οὐθέν.
You yourselves go, take straw for yourselves wherever you may find it, for nothing of your ⓘ shall be diminished».

ויפץ העם בכל ארץ מצרים לקשש קש לתבן
καὶ διεσπάρη ὁ λαὸς ἐν ὅλῃ Αἰγύπτῳ συναγαγεῖν καλάμην εἰς ἄχυρα·
And the people ⓘ throughout all the land of Egypt to gather ⓘ for straw.

והנגשים אצים לאמר כלו מעשיכם דבר יום ביומו כאשר בהיות התבן
οἱ δὲ ἐργοδιῶκται κατέσπευδον αὐτοὺς λέγοντες Συντελεῖτε τὰ ἔργα τὰ καθήκοντα καθ’ ἡμέραν καθάπερ καὶ ὅτε τὸ ἄχυρον ἐδίδοτο ὑμῖν.
And the taskmasters ⓘ, saying: «Complete your labors, ⓘ, as when there was straw».

ויכו שטרי בני ישראל אשר שמו עלהם נגשי פרעה לאמר מדוע לא כליתם חקכם ללבן כתמול שלשם גם תמול גם היום
καὶ ἐμαστιγώθησαν οἱ γραμματεῖς τοῦ γένους τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ οἱ κατασταθέντες ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ὑπὸ τῶν ἐπιστατῶν τοῦ Φαραω λέγοντες Διὰ τί οὐ συνετελέσατε τὰς συντάξεις ὑμῶν τῆς πλινθείας, καθάπερ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ἡμέραν, καὶ τὸ τῆς σήμερον;
And the ⓘ of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were ⓘ, with the words: «Why have you not completed your ⓘ of bricks neither yesterday nor today as yesterday and the day before?».

ויבאו שטרי בני ישראל ויצעקו אל פרעה לאמר למה תעשה כה לעבדיך
εἰσελθόντες δὲ οἱ γραμματεῖς τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ κατεβόησαν πρὸς Φαραω λέγοντες Ἵνα τί οὕτως ποιεῖς τοῖς σοῖς οἰκέταις;
And the foremen of the sons of Israel came and ⓘ to Pharaoh: «Why do you deal thus with your servants?

תבן אין נתן לעבדיך ולבנים אמרים לנו עשו והנה עבדיך מכים וחטאת עמך
ἄχυρον οὐ δίδοται τοῖς οἰκέταις σου, καὶ τὴν πλίνθον ἡμῖν λέγουσιν ποιεῖν, καὶ ἰδοὺ οἱ παῖδές σου μεμαστίγωνται· ἀδικήσεις οὖν τὸν λαόν σου.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——Straw is not given to your ⓘ, yet they tell us to make the bricks; and behold, your ⓘ are flogged: ⓘ».—— Masoretic (MT) ——Straw is not given to your servants, yet they tell us: Make the bricks! And behold, your servants are beaten, but the ⓘ».

ויאמר נרפים אתם נרפים על כן אתם אמרים נלכה נזבחה ליהוה
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Σχολάζετε, σχολασταί ἐστε· διὰ τοῦτο λέγετε Πορευθῶμεν θύσωμεν τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν.
And he said: «ⓘ you are, idle! Therefore you say: Let us go, let us offer sacrifices to the ⓘ.

ועתה לכו עבדו ותבן לא ינתן לכם ותכן לבנים תתנו
νῦν οὖν πορευθέντες ἐργάζεσθε· τὸ γὰρ ἄχυρον οὐ δοθήσεται ὑμῖν, καὶ τὴν σύνταξιν τῆς πλινθείας ἀποδώσετε.
And now go, ⓘ; straw shall not be given you, yet the quota of bricks you shall deliver».
19
ויראו שטרי בני ישראל אתם ברע לאמר לא תגרעו מלבניכם דבר יום ביומו
ἑώρων δὲ οἱ γραμματεῖς τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἑαυτοὺς ἐν κακοῖς λέγοντες Οὐκ ἀπολείψετε τῆς πλινθείας τὸ καθῆκον τῇ ἡμέρᾳ.
And the foremen of the sons of Israel ⓘ themselves ⓘ, with these words: «You shall not reduce anything of your bricks, the matter of each day in its day».

ויפגעו את משה ואת אהרן נצבים לקראתם בצאתם מאת פרעה
συνήντησαν δὲ Μωυσῇ καὶ Ααρων ἐρχομένοις εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῖς ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Φαραω
And they ⓘ Moshèh and Aharòn standing to meet them as they came out from Pharaoh's presence.

ויאמרו אלהם ירא יהוה עליכם וישפט אשר הבאשתם את ריחנו בעיני פרעה ובעיני עבדיו לתת חרב בידם להרגנו
καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς Ἴδοι ὁ θεὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ κρίναι, ὅτι ἐβδελύξατε τὴν ὀσμὴν ἡμῶν ἐναντίον Φαραω καὶ ἐναντίον τῶν θεραπόντων αὐτοῦ δοῦναι ῥομφαίαν εἰς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι ἡμᾶς.
And they said to them: «May the ⓘ look upon you and ⓘ, because you have made our ⓘ ⓘ in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, putting a sword into their hand to kill us».

וישב משה אל יהוה ויאמר אדני למה הרעתה לעם הזה למה זה שלחתני
ἐπέστρεψεν δὲ Μωϋσῆς πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπεν Κύριε, διὰ τί ἐκάκωσας τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον; καὶ ἵνα τί ἀπέσταλκάς με;
And Moshèh returned to the ⓘ and said: «ⓘ, why have you ⓘ to this people? Why ever did you send me?

ומאז באתי אל פרעה לדבר בשמך הרע לעם הזה והצל לא הצלת את עמך
καὶ ἀφ’ οὗ πεπόρευμαι πρὸς Φαραω λαλῆσαι ἐπὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι, ἐκάκωσεν τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον, καὶ οὐκ ἐρρύσω τὸν λαόν σου.
And from when I went to Pharaoh to speak ⓘ, he has done evil to this people, and ⓘ your people».
