ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה את יעקב איש וביתו באו
Ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ τῶν εἰσπεπορευμένων εἰς Αἴγυπτον ἅμα Ιακωβ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτῶν – ἕκαστος πανοικίᾳ αὐτῶν εἰσήλθοσαν – ·
And these are the namesⓘ of the children of Israèl who came into Mitzràyim with Yaaqòv — each man with his household they cameⓘ — with their father.

ראובן שמעון לוי ויהודה
Ρουβην, Συμεων, Λευι, Ιουδας,
Reuvèn, Shim'òn, Levì and Yehudàh;

יששכר זבולן ובנימן
Ισσαχαρ, Ζαβουλων καὶ Βενιαμιν,
Yissakhàr, Zevulùn and Binyamìn;
4
דן ונפתלי גד ואשר
Δαν καὶ Νεφθαλι, Γαδ καὶ Ασηρ.
Dàn and Naftalì, Gàd and Ashèr.

ויהי כל נפש יצאי ירך יעקב שבעים נפש ויוסף היה במצרים
Ιωσηφ δὲ ἦν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ. ἦσαν δὲ πᾶσαι ψυχαὶ ἐξ Ιακωβ πέντε καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——Yosèfⓘ, then, was in Mitzràyimⓘ; and all the soulsⓘ descended from Yaaqòv were seventy-fiveⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——And all the soulsⓘ that came out of the loinsⓘ of Yaaqòv were seventy soulsⓘ; and Yosèf was already in Mitzràyim.

וימת יוסף וכל אחיו וכל הדור ההוא
ἐτελεύτησεν δὲ Ιωσηφ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ γενεὰ ἐκείνη.
And Yosèf died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.

ובני ישראל פרו וישרצו וירבו ויעצמו במאד מאד ותמלא הארץ אתם
οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ ηὐξήθησαν καὶ ἐπληθύνθησαν καὶ χυδαῖοι ἐγένοντο καὶ κατίσχυον σφόδρα σφόδρα, ἐπλήθυνεν δὲ ἡ γῆ αὐτούς.
And the children of Israèl were fruitfulⓘ and swarmedⓘ and multiplied and became mighty beyond all measureⓘ; and the land was filled with them.

ויקם מלך חדש על מצרים אשר לא ידע את יוסף
Ἀνέστη δὲ βασιλεὺς ἕτερος ἐπ’ Αἴγυπτον, ὃς οὐκ ᾔδει τὸν Ιωσηφ.
And there aroseⓘ a newⓘ king over Mitzràyim, who did not knowⓘ Yosèf.

ויאמר אל עמו הנה עם בני ישראל רב ועצום ממנו
εἶπεν δὲ τῷ ἔθνει αὐτοῦ Ἰδοὺ τὸ γένος τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ μέγα πλῆθος καὶ ἰσχύει ὑπὲρ ἡμᾶς·
And he said to his people: «Behold, the peopleⓘ of the children of Israèl is more numerous and more mightyⓘ than we.

הבה נתחכמה לו פן ירבה והיה כי תקראנה מלחמה ונוסף גם הוא על שנאינו ונלחם בנו ועלה מן הארץ
δεῦτε οὖν κατασοφισώμεθα αὐτούς, μήποτε πληθυνθῇ καί, ἡνίκα ἂν συμβῇ ἡμῖν πόλεμος, προστεθήσονται καὶ οὗτοι πρὸς τοὺς ὑπεναντίους καὶ ἐκπολεμήσαντες ἡμᾶς ἐξελεύσονται ἐκ τῆς γῆς.
Come, let us deal shrewdlyⓘ with him, lest he multiply; and it will come to pass that, if war breaks out, he too join our enemies and fight against us and go up out of the landⓘ».

וישימו עליו שרי מסים למען ענתו בסבלתם ויבן ערי מסכנות לפרעה את פתם ואת רעמסס
καὶ ἐπέστησεν αὐτοῖς ἐπιστάτας τῶν ἔργων, ἵνα κακώσωσιν αὐτοὺς ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις· καὶ ᾠκοδόμησαν πόλεις ὀχυρὰς τῷ Φαραω, τήν τε Πιθωμ καὶ Ραμεσση καὶ Ων, ἥ ἐστιν Ἡλίου πόλις.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And he set over them overseersⓘ of the works, that they might oppressⓘ them in the works; and they built for Pharaoh fortified citiesⓘ: Pitòm and Ramessè and On, which is the City of the Sunⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——And they set over him chiefs of forced laborⓘ to oppress himⓘ with their burdens; and he built store-citiesⓘ for Pharaoh: Pitòm and Ra'amsèsⓘ, and On, which is Heliopolis.

וכאשר יענו אתו כן ירבה וכן יפרץ ויקצו מפני בני ישראל
καθότι δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐταπείνουν, τοσούτῳ πλείους ἐγίνοντο καὶ ἴσχυον σφόδρα σφόδρα· καὶ ἐβδελύσσοντο οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ.
But the more they oppressedⓘ him, the more he multiplied and the more he spread abroadⓘ; and they were seized with loathingⓘ before the children of Israèl.

ויעבדו מצרים את בני ישראל בפרך
καὶ κατεδυνάστευον οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ βίᾳ
And the Egyptians enslaved the children of Israèl with harshnessⓘ.
14
וימררו את חייהם בעבדה קשה בחמר ובלבנים ובכל עבדה בשדה את כל עבדתם אשר עבדו בהם בפרך
καὶ κατωδύνων αὐτῶν τὴν ζωὴν ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις τοῖς σκληροῖς, τῷ πηλῷ καὶ τῇ πλινθείᾳ καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις τοῖς ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις, κατὰ πάντα τὰ ἔργα, ὧν κατεδουλοῦντο αὐτοὺς μετὰ βίας.
And they made bitterⓘ their lives with a hardⓘ servitude, with mortarⓘ and bricksⓘ and with every labor in the fieldsⓘ; every labor of theirs that they imposed was with harshness.

ויאמר מלך מצרים למילדת העברית אשר שם האחת שפרה ושם השנית פועה
Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Αἰγυπτίων ταῖς μαίαις τῶν Εβραίων, τῇ μιᾷ αὐτῶν, ᾗ ὄνομα Σεπφωρα, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς δευτέρας Φουα,
And the king of Mitzràyim said to the Hebrew midwivesⓘ — the name of the one was Shifràⓘ and the name of the second Pu'àhⓘ —

ויאמר בילדכן את העבריות וראיתן על האבנים אם בן הוא והמתן אתו ואם בת היא וחיה
καὶ εἶπεν Ὅταν μαιοῦσθε τὰς Εβραίας καὶ ὦσιν πρὸς τῷ τίκτειν, ἐὰν μὲν ἄρσεν ᾖ, ἀποκτείνατε αὐτό, ἐὰν δὲ θῆλυ, περιποιεῖσθε αὐτό.
and he said: «When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women, look upon the two stonesⓘ: if it is a sonⓘ, put him to death; if it is a daughter, let her live».

ותיראן המילדת את האלהים ולא עשו כאשר דבר אליהן מלך מצרים ותחיין את הילדים
ἐφοβήθησαν δὲ αἱ μαῖαι τὸν θεὸν καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησαν καθότι συνέταξεν αὐταῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἐζωογόνουν τὰ ἄρσενα.
And the midwives feared Godⓘ and did not do as the king of Mitzràyim had told them, and they let the children live.

ויקרא מלך מצרים למילדת ויאמר להן מדוע עשיתן הדבר הזה ותחיין את הילדים
ἐκάλεσεν δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου τὰς μαίας καὶ εἶπεν αὐταῖς Τί ὅτι ἐποιήσατε τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο καὶ ἐζωογονεῖτε τὰ ἄρσενα;
And the king of Mitzràyim summoned the midwives and said to them: «Why have you done this thing and let the children live?».

ותאמרן המילדת אל פרעה כי לא כנשים המצרית העברית כי חיות הנה בטרם תבוא אלהן המילדת וילדו
εἶπαν δὲ αἱ μαῖαι τῷ Φαραω Οὐχ ὡς γυναῖκες Αἰγύπτου αἱ Εβραῖαι, τίκτουσιν γὰρ πρὶν ἢ εἰσελθεῖν πρὸς αὐτὰς τὰς μαίας· καὶ ἔτικτον.
And the midwives answered Pharaoh: «Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women: they are vigorousⓘ, before the midwife comes to them they have already given birth».

וייטב אלהים למילדת וירב העם ויעצמו מאד
εὖ δὲ ἐποίει ὁ θεὸς ταῖς μαίαις, καὶ ἐπλήθυνεν ὁ λαὸς καὶ ἴσχυεν σφόδρα.
And Godⓘ dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and became very mighty.

ויהי כי יראו המילדת את האלהים ויעש להם בתים
ἐπειδὴ ἐφοβοῦντο αἱ μαῖαι τὸν θεόν, ἐποίησαν ἑαυταῖς οἰκίας. –
And it came to pass that, because the midwives feared Godⓘ, he made for them housesⓘ.

ויצו פרעה לכל עמו לאמר כל הבן הילוד היארה תשליכהו וכל הבת תחיון
συνέταξεν δὲ Φαραω παντὶ τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ λέγων Πᾶν ἄρσεν, ὃ ἐὰν τεχθῇ τοῖς Εβραίοις, εἰς τὸν ποταμὸν ῥίψατε· καὶ πᾶν θῆλυ, ζωογονεῖτε αὐτό.
And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying: «Every son that is bornⓘ of the Hebrews, cast him into the Nileⓘ; every daughter let her live».
