וישכם לבן בבקר וינשק לבניו ולבנותיו ויברך אתהם וילך וישב לבן למקמו
ἀναστὰς δὲ Λαβαν τὸ πρωῒ κατεφίλησεν τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς θυγατέρας αὐτοῦ καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτούς, καὶ ἀποστραφεὶς Λαβαν ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ.
Lavàn rose early in the morningⓘ, kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them; and Lavàn returned to his placeⓘ.

ויעקב הלך לדרכו ויפגעו בו מלאכי אלהים
Καὶ Ιακωβ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδόν. καὶ ἀναβλέψας εἶδεν παρεμβολὴν θεοῦ παρεμβεβληκυῖαν, καὶ συνήντησαν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ.
And Yaʿaqòv went on his way; and he saw a camp of God encamped beside himⓘ, and the messengers of God met himⓘ.

ויאמר יעקב כאשר ראם מחנה אלהים זה ויקרא שם המקום ההוא מחנים
εἶπεν δὲ Ιακωβ, ἡνίκα εἶδεν αὐτούς Παρεμβολὴ θεοῦ αὕτη· καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Παρεμβολαί.
And Yaʿaqòv said when he saw themⓘ: «This is the campⓘ of God»; and he called the name of that place Machanàimⓘ.

וישלח יעקב מלאכים לפניו אל עשו אחיו ארצה שעיר שדה אדום
Ἀπέστειλεν δὲ Ιακωβ ἀγγέλους ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πρὸς Ησαυ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ εἰς γῆν Σηιρ εἰς χώραν Εδωμ
And Yaʿaqòv sent messengersⓘ ahead of him toward Esàw his brother, in the land of Seìrⓘ, in the territory of Edòm.

ויצו אתם לאמר כה תאמרון לאדני לעשו כה אמר עבדך יעקב עם לבן גרתי ואחר עד עתה
καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς λέγων Οὕτως ἐρεῖτε τῷ κυρίῳ μου Ησαυ Οὕτως λέγει ὁ παῖς σου Ιακωβ Μετὰ Λαβαν παρῴκησα καὶ ἐχρόνισα ἕως τοῦ νῦν,
And he commanded them, saying: «Thus shall you say to my lord Esàw: Thus says your servant Yaʿaqòv: With Lavàn I have sojourned as a strangerⓘ and have stayed until nowⓘ».

ויהי לי שור וחמור צאן ועבד ושפחה ואשלחה להגיד לאדני למצא חן בעיניך
καὶ ἐγένοντό μοι βόες καὶ ὄνοι καὶ πρόβατα καὶ παῖδες καὶ παιδίσκαι, καὶ ἀπέστειλα ἀναγγεῖλαι τῷ κυρίῳ μου Ησαυ, ἵνα εὕρῃ ὁ παῖς σου χάριν ἐναντίον σου.
«And I have acquired oxen and donkeys, flocksⓘ, menservants and maidservants; and I have sent to announce it to my lord, that your servant may find favorⓘ in your eyes».

וישבו המלאכים אל יעקב לאמר באנו אל אחיך אל עשו וגם הלך לקראתך וארבע מאות איש עמו
καὶ ἀνέστρεψαν οἱ ἄγγελοι πρὸς Ιακωβ λέγοντες Ἤλθομεν πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφόν σου Ησαυ, καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ἔρχεται εἰς συνάντησίν σοι καὶ τετρακόσιοι ἄνδρες μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
And the messengers returned to Yaʿaqòv, saying: «We went to your brother Esàw, and behold, he is coming to meet youⓘ, and four hundred men with him».

ויירא יעקב מאד ויצר לו ויחץ את העם אשר אתו ואת הצאן ואת הבקר והגמלים לשני מחנות
ἐφοβήθη δὲ Ιακωβ σφόδρα καὶ ἠπορεῖτο. καὶ διεῖλεν τὸν λαὸν τὸν μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς βόας καὶ τὰ πρόβατα εἰς δύο παρεμβολάς,
And Yaʿaqòv was greatly afraidⓘ and was distressedⓘ. And he divided the people who were with him and the flocks and the herds and the camelsⓘ into two camps.

ויאמר אם יבוא עשו אל המחנה האחת והכהו והיה המחנה הנשאר לפליטה
καὶ εἶπεν Ιακωβ Ἐὰν ἔλθῃ Ησαυ εἰς παρεμβολὴν μίαν καὶ ἐκκόψῃ αὐτήν, ἔσται ἡ παρεμβολὴ ἡ δευτέρα εἰς τὸ σῴζεσθαι.
And he said: «If Esàw comes against one campⓘ and strikes it down, the camp that remainsⓘ will escape».

ויאמר יעקב אלהי אבי אברהם ואלהי אבי יצחק יהוה האמר אלי שוב לארצך ולמולדתך ואיטיבה עמך
εἶπεν δὲ Ιακωβ Ὁ θεὸς τοῦ πατρός μου Αβρααμ καὶ ὁ θεὸς τοῦ πατρός μου Ισαακ, κύριε ὁ εἴπας μοι Ἀπότρεχε εἰς τὴν γῆν τῆς γενέσεώς σου καὶ εὖ σε ποιήσω,
And Yaʿaqòv said: «God of my father Avrahàm and God of my father Yitzchàq, the Tetragrammatonⓘ, you who said to me: "Return to your land and to your kindred"ⓘ, and I will do you good».

קטנתי מכל החסדים ומכל האמת אשר עשית את עבדך כי במקלי עברתי את הירדן הזה ועתה הייתי לשני מחנות
ἱκανοῦταί μοι ἀπὸ πάσης δικαιοσύνης καὶ ἀπὸ πάσης ἀληθείας, ἧς ἐποίησας τῷ παιδί σου· ἐν γὰρ τῇ ῥάβδῳ μου διέβην τὸν Ιορδάνην τοῦτον, νῦν δὲ γέγονα εἰς δύο παρεμβολάς.
I am too smallⓘ for all the acts of graceⓘ and all the faithfulnessⓘ that you have shown to your servant: with my staff alone I crossed this Yarden, and now I have become two camps.

הצילני נא מיד אחי מיד עשו כי ירא אנכי אתו פן יבוא והכני אם על בנים
ἐξελοῦ με ἐκ χειρὸς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μου Ησαυ, ὅτι φοβοῦμαι ἐγὼ αὐτόν, μήποτε ἐλθὼν πατάξῃ με καὶ μητέρα ἐπὶ τέκνοις.
Deliver meⓘ, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esàw, for I fear him — lest he come and strike me down, the mother with the childrenⓘ.

ואתה אמרת היטב איטיב עמך ושמתי את זרעך כחול הים אשר לא יספר מרב
σὺ δὲ εἶπας Καλῶς εὖ σε ποιήσω καὶ θήσω τὸ σπέρμα σου ὡς τὴν ἄμμον τῆς θαλάσσης, ἣ οὐκ ἀριθμηθήσεται ἀπὸ τοῦ πλήθους.
You said: «I will surely do you good and will make your descendantsⓘ as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted for multitudeⓘ».

וילן שם בלילה ההוא ויקח מן הבא בידו מנחה לעשו אחיו
καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ἐκεῖ τὴν νύκτα ἐκείνην. καὶ ἔλαβεν ὧν ἔφερεν δῶρα καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν Ησαυ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ,
And he slept there that night. And he took of what had come into his handⓘ a gift for Esàw his brother.
15
עזים מאתים ותישים עשרים רחלים מאתים ואילים עשרים
αἶγας διακοσίας, τράγους εἴκοσι, πρόβατα διακόσια, κριοὺς εἴκοσι,
Two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty ramsⓘ.

גמלים מיניקות ובניהם שלשים פרות ארבעים ופרים עשרה אתנת עשרים ועירם עשרה
καμήλους θηλαζούσας καὶ τὰ παιδία αὐτῶν τριάκοντα, βόας τεσσαράκοντα, ταύρους δέκα, ὄνους εἴκοσι καὶ πώλους δέκα.
Nursingⓘ camels and their young thirty, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-donkeys and ten foalsⓘ.

ויתן ביד עבדיו עדר עדר לבדו ויאמר אל עבדיו עברו לפני ורוח תשימו בין עדר ובין עדר
καὶ ἔδωκεν διὰ χειρὸς τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ ποίμνιον κατὰ μόνας. εἶπεν δὲ τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ Προπορεύεσθε ἔμπροσθέν μου καὶ διάστημα ποιεῖτε ἀνὰ μέσον ποίμνης καὶ ποίμνης.
And he gave them into the hand of his servants, each drove by itselfⓘ; and he said to the servants: «Pass on before me and put a spaceⓘ between drove and drove».

ויצו את הראשון לאמר כי יפגשך עשו אחי ושאלך לאמר למי אתה ואנה תלך ולמי אלה לפניך
καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ πρώτῳ λέγων Ἐάν σοι συναντήσῃ Ησαυ ὁ ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἐρωτᾷ σε λέγων Τίνος εἶ καὶ ποῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ τίνος ταῦτα τὰ προπορευόμενά σου;
And he commanded the first, saying: «If Esàw my brother meets you and asks you: "Whose are you, where are you going, and whose are these before you?"ⓘ».

ואמרת לעבדך ליעקב מנחה הוא שלוחה לאדני לעשו והנה גם הוא אחרינו
ἐρεῖς Τοῦ παιδός σου Ιακωβ· δῶρα ἀπέσταλκεν τῷ κυρίῳ μου Ησαυ, καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ὀπίσω ἡμῶν.
«You shall say: Your servant Yaʿaqòv's; it is a gift sentⓘ to my lord Esàw, and behold, he himself is behind us».

ויצו גם את השני גם את השלישי גם את כל ההלכים אחרי העדרים לאמר כדבר הזה תדברון אל עשו במצאכם אתו
καὶ ἐνετείλατο τῷ πρώτῳ καὶ τῷ δευτέρῳ καὶ τῷ τρίτῳ καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς προπορευομένοις ὀπίσω τῶν ποιμνίων τούτων λέγων Κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο λαλήσατε Ησαυ ἐν τῷ εὑρεῖν ὑμᾶς αὐτὸν
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And he gave orders to the first and to the second and to the thirdⓘ and to all those who marched behindⓘ these flocks, saying: «According to this word you shall speak to Esàu when you find himⓘ».—— Masoretic (MT) ——And he commanded thus to the first, to the second, to the thirdⓘ and to all those who went behind the flocks, saying: «According to this word you shall speak to Esàw when you find him».

ואמרתם גם הנה עבדך יעקב אחרינו כי אמר אכפרה פניו במנחה ההלכת לפני ואחרי כן אראה פניו אולי ישא פני
καὶ ἐρεῖτε Ἰδοὺ ὁ παῖς σου Ιακωβ παραγίνεται ὀπίσω ἡμῶν. εἶπεν γάρ Ἐξιλάσομαι τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἐν τοῖς δώροις τοῖς προπορευομένοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ὄψομαι τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ· ἴσως γὰρ προσδέξεται τὸ πρόσωπόν μου.
And you shall say: «Behold, your servant Yaʿaqòv is behind us». For he said within himself: «I will appease him»ⓘ with the gift that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face: perhaps he will receive me with favorⓘ».

ותעבר המנחה על פניו והוא לן בלילה ההוא במחנה
καὶ παρεπορεύοντο τὰ δῶρα κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς δὲ ἐκοιμήθη τὴν νύκτα ἐκείνην ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ.
And the gift passed on before him, but he himself remained to sleep that night in the campⓘ.
23
ויקם בלילה הוא ויקח את שתי נשיו ואת שתי שפחתיו ואת אחד עשר ילדיו ויעבר את מעבר יבק
Ἀναστὰς δὲ τὴν νύκτα ἐκείνην ἔλαβεν τὰς δύο γυναῖκας καὶ τὰς δύο παιδίσκας καὶ τὰ ἕνδεκα παιδία αὐτοῦ καὶ διέβη τὴν διάβασιν τοῦ Ιαβοκ·
He rose that same night, took his two wives, the two maidservants and his eleven childrenⓘ and crossed the ford of the Yabbòqⓘ.

ויקחם ויעברם את הנחל ויעבר את אשר לו
καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτοὺς καὶ διέβη τὸν χειμάρρουν καὶ διεβίβασεν πάντα τὰ αὐτοῦ.
He took them and made them cross the torrent, and made all that he had cross overⓘ.
25
ויותר יעקב לבדו ויאבק איש עמו עד עלות השחר
ὑπελείφθη δὲ Ιακωβ μόνος, καὶ ἐπάλαιεν ἄνθρωπος μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἕως πρωί.
And Yaʿaqòv was left aloneⓘ; and a manⓘ wrestled with him until the rising of the dawnⓘ.

וירא כי לא יכל לו ויגע בכף ירכו ותקע כף ירך יעקב בהאבקו עמו
εἶδεν δὲ ὅτι οὐ δύναται πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ ἥψατο τοῦ πλάτους τοῦ μηροῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐνάρκησεν τὸ πλάτος τοῦ μηροῦ Ιακωβ ἐν τῷ παλαίειν αὐτὸν μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
And the man sawⓘ that he could not prevail over him, and he touched the socket of the hipⓘ, and Yaʿaqòv's hip socket was dislocatedⓘ as he wrestled with him.
27
ויאמר שלחני כי עלה השחר ויאמר לא אשלחך כי אם ברכתני
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀπόστειλόν με· ἀνέβη γὰρ ὁ ὄρθρος. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Οὐ μή σε ἀποστείλω, ἐὰν μή με εὐλογήσῃς.
And the man said: «Let me goⓘ, for the dawn has risen». But he said: «I will not let you go unless you bless meⓘ».

ויאמר אליו מה שמך ויאמר יעקב
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Τί τὸ ὄνομά σού ἐστιν; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ιακωβ.
And he said to him: «What is your name?» And he said: «Yaʿaqòv».
29
ויאמר לא יעקב יאמר עוד שמך כי אם ישראל כי שרית עם אלהים ועם אנשים ותוכל
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Οὐ κληθήσεται ἔτι τὸ ὄνομά σου Ιακωβ, ἀλλὰ Ισραηλ ἔσται τὸ ὄνομά σου, ὅτι ἐνίσχυσας μετὰ θεοῦ καὶ μετὰ ἀνθρώπων δυνατός.
And he said: «No longer shall your name be called Yaʿaqòvⓘ but Yisraʾèlⓘ, «strong-with-God»ⓘ, because you have been strong with God and with men, and have prevailedⓘ».

וישאל יעקב ויאמר הגידה נא שמך ויאמר למה זה תשאל לשמי ויברך אתו שם
ἠρώτησεν δὲ Ιακωβ καὶ εἶπεν Ἀνάγγειλόν μοι τὸ ὄνομά σου. καὶ εἶπεν Ἵνα τί τοῦτο ἐρωτᾷς τὸ ὄνομά μου; καὶ ηὐλόγησεν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ.
And Yaʿaqòv asked, saying: «Tell me, I pray, your name». And he said: «Why do you ask my name?ⓘ». And he blessed him there.

ויקרא יעקב שם המקום פניאל כי ראיתי אלהים פנים אל פנים ותנצל נפשי
καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ιακωβ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου Εἶδος θεοῦ· εἶδον γὰρ θεὸν πρόσωπον πρὸς πρόσωπον, καὶ ἐσώθη μου ἡ ψυχή.
And Yaʿaqòv called the name of the place Penuèlⓘ: «because — he said — I have seen God face to faceⓘ, and my life was spared».

ויזרח לו השמש כאשר עבר את פנואל והוא צלע על ירכו
ἀνέτειλεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ἥλιος, ἡνίκα παρῆλθεν τὸ Εἶδος τοῦ θεοῦ· αὐτὸς δὲ ἐπέσκαζεν τῷ μηρῷ αὐτοῦ.
And the sun roseⓘ for him as he passed Penuèlⓘ; and he was limpingⓘ on his hip.
33
על כן לא יאכלו בני ישראל את גיד הנשה אשר על כף הירך עד היום הזה כי נגע בכף ירך יעקב בגיד הנשה
ἕνεκεν τούτου οὐ μὴ φάγωσιν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ τὸ νεῦρον, ὃ ἐνάρκησεν, ὅ ἐστιν ἐπὶ τοῦ πλάτους τοῦ μηροῦ, ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης, ὅτι ἥψατο τοῦ πλάτους τοῦ μηροῦ Ιακωβ τοῦ νεύρου καὶ ἐνάρκησεν.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——For this reason the children of Israel shall not eatⓘ the sinew, which grew numbⓘ, which is on the socket of the hipⓘ, until this day — because he touched the socket of Yaʿaqòv's hip, the sinew, and it grew numbⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——For this reason the children of Israel do not eatⓘ the sciatic sinewⓘ that is on the socket of the hip, until this day — because there was touched the socket of Yaʿaqòv's hip on the sciatic sinewⓘ.
