וישב יעקב בארץ מגורי אביו בארץ כנען
Κατῴκει δὲ Ιακωβ ἐν τῇ γῇ, οὗ παρῴκησεν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ, ἐν γῇ Χανααν.
Yaaqòv dwelt in the landⓘ of his father's sojourningsⓘ, in the land of Kenàanⓘ.

אלה תלדות יעקב יוסף בן שבע עשרה שנה היה רעה את אחיו בצאן והוא נער את בני בלהה ואת בני זלפה נשי אביו ויבא יוסף את דבתם רעה אל אביהם
αὗται δὲ αἱ γενέσεις Ιακωβ· Ιωσηφ δέκα ἑπτὰ ἐτῶν ἦν ποιμαίνων μετὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ τὰ πρόβατα ὢν νέος, μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν Βαλλας καὶ μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν Ζελφας τῶν γυναικῶν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ· κατήνεγκεν δὲ Ιωσηφ ψόγον πονηρὸν πρὸς Ισραηλ τὸν πατέρα αὐτῶν.
These are the toldòtⓘ of Yaaqòv. Yosèf, at seventeen yearsⓘ, was pasturing the flock with his brothers — he was nàarⓘ — with the sons of Bilhàh and with the sons of Zilpàh, his father's wivesⓘ. And Yosèf brought their dibbatàm ra'àhⓘ to the fatherⓘ.

וישראל אהב את יוסף מכל בניו כי בן זקנים הוא לו ועשה לו כתנת פסים
Ιακωβ δὲ ἠγάπα τὸν Ιωσηφ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ, ὅτι υἱὸς γήρους ἦν αὐτῷ· ἐποίησεν δὲ αὐτῷ χιτῶνα ποικίλον.
Yisraèlⓘ loved Yosèf more than all his sonsⓘ, because he was for him ben zequnìmⓘ; and he made him a kuttònet passìmⓘ.

ויראו אחיו כי אתו אהב אביהם מכל אחיו וישנאו אתו ולא יכלו דברו לשלם
ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ φιλεῖ ἐκ πάντων τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ, ἐμίσησαν αὐτὸν καὶ οὐκ ἐδύναντο λαλεῖν αὐτῷ οὐδὲν εἰρηνικόν.
His brothers saw that the father loved him more than all the brothersⓘ, and they hated himⓘ and could not speak to him in peaceⓘ.

ויחלם יוסף חלום ויגד לאחיו ויוספו עוד שנא אתו
Ἐνυπνιασθεὶς δὲ Ιωσηφ ἐνύπνιον ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτὸ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——Having dreamedⓘ a dream, Yosèf announced it to his brothersⓘ a dream, and Yosèf told it to his brothers.—— Masoretic (MT) ——Yosèf dreamed a dreamⓘ and recounted it to his brothers; and they continued still to hate himⓘ.

ויאמר אליהם שמעו נא החלום הזה אשר חלמתי
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀκούσατε τοῦ ἐνυπνίου τούτου, οὗ ἐνυπνιάσθην·
And he said to them: Hear nowⓘ this dream that I have dreamed.

והנה אנחנו מאלמים אלמים בתוך השדה והנה קמה אלמתי וגם נצבה והנה תסבינה אלמתיכם ותשתחוין לאלמתי
ᾤμην ἡμᾶς δεσμεύειν δράγματα ἐν μέσῳ τῷ πεδίῳ, καὶ ἀνέστη τὸ ἐμὸν δράγμα καὶ ὠρθώθη, περιστραφέντα δὲ τὰ δράγματα ὑμῶν προσεκύνησαν τὸ ἐμὸν δράγμα.
And beholdⓘ, we were binding sheavesⓘ in the midst of the field; and behold, my sheaf rose up and stood erectⓘ; and your sheaves arranged themselves aroundⓘ and bowed downⓘ before my sheaf.

ויאמרו לו אחיו המלך תמלך עלינו אם משול תמשל בנו ויוספו עוד שנא אתו על חלמתיו ועל דבריו
εἶπαν δὲ αὐτῷ οἱ ἀδελφοί Μὴ βασιλεύων βασιλεύσεις ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς ἢ κυριεύων κυριεύσεις ἡμῶν; καὶ προσέθεντο ἔτι μισεῖν αὐτὸν ἕνεκεν τῶν ἐνυπνίων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἕνεκεν τῶν ῥημάτων αὐτοῦ. –
The brothers said to him: Reigning will you reign over usⓘ, or ruling will you ruleⓘ over us? And they continued still to hate him for his dreams and for his wordsⓘ — the dream pronounced is already an act.

ויחלם עוד חלום אחר ויספר אתו לאחיו ויאמר הנה חלמתי חלום עוד והנה השמש והירח ואחד עשר כוכבים משתחוים לי
εἶδεν δὲ ἐνύπνιον ἕτερον καὶ διηγήσατο αὐτὸ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Ἰδοὺ ἐνυπνιασάμην ἐνύπνιον ἕτερον, ὥσπερ ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ἡ σελήνη καὶ ἕνδεκα ἀστέρες προσεκύνουν με.
And he dreamed yet another dreamⓘ and recounted it to the brothersⓘ, and he said: I have dreamed yet a dream: behold the sun and the moon and eleven starsⓘ were bowing down before me.

ויספר אל אביו ואל אחיו ויגער בו אביו ויאמר לו מה החלום הזה אשר חלמת הבוא נבוא אני ואמך ואחיך להשתחות לך ארצה
καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί τὸ ἐνύπνιον τοῦτο, ὃ ἐνυπνιάσθης; ἆρά γε ἐλθόντες ἐλευσόμεθα ἐγώ τε καὶ ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου προσκυνῆσαί σοι ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν;
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And his father rebuked himⓘ and said to him: What is this dream that you have dreamed?ⓘ Shall we indeed, coming, comeⓘ, I and your mother and your brothers, to bow down before you to the groundⓘ?—— Masoretic (MT) ——He recounted it to the father and to the brothersⓘ; the father rebuked himⓘ and said to him: What is this dream that you have dreamed? Coming we will comeⓘ, I and your mother and your brothers, to bow down before you to the groundⓘ?

ויקנאו בו אחיו ואביו שמר את הדבר
ἐζήλωσαν δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ, ὁ δὲ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ διετήρησεν τὸ ῥῆμα.
The brothers were jealousⓘ of him, but the father kept the matterⓘ.

וילכו אחיו לרעות את צאן אביהם בשכם
Ἐπορεύθησαν δὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ βόσκειν τὰ πρόβατα τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῶν εἰς Συχεμ.
His brothers went to pasture the flockⓘ of the father at Shekèmⓘ.

ויאמר ישראל אל יוסף הלוא אחיך רעים בשכם לכה ואשלחך אליהם ויאמר לו הנני
καὶ εἶπεν Ισραηλ πρὸς Ιωσηφ Οὐχ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου ποιμαίνουσιν ἐν Συχεμ; δεῦρο ἀποστείλω σε πρὸς αὐτούς. εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἰδοὺ ἐγώ.
And Yisraèlⓘ said to Yosèf: Are not your brothers pasturing at Shekèm? Come, I will send you to themⓘ. He answered: Hinnèniⓘ.

ויאמר לו לך נא ראה את שלום אחיך ואת שלום הצאן והשבני דבר וישלחהו מעמק חברון ויבא שכמה
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ισραηλ Πορευθεὶς ἰδὲ εἰ ὑγιαίνουσιν οἱ ἀδελφοί σου καὶ τὰ πρόβατα, καὶ ἀνάγγειλόν μοι. καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς κοιλάδος τῆς Χεβρων, καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Συχεμ.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——Israel said to him: Going, seeⓘ whether they are wellⓘ your brothers and the livestockⓘ, and bring me word. And he sent him from the valley of Chevrónⓘ, and he came to Shekèm.—— Masoretic (MT) ——He said to him: Go now lekh-nàⓘ, see the shalomⓘ of your brothers and the shalom of the flock, and bring me back word. He sent him from the valley of Chevrónⓘ and he came to Shekèm.

וימצאהו איש והנה תעה בשדה וישאלהו האיש לאמר מה תבקש
καὶ εὗρεν αὐτὸν ἄνθρωπος πλανώμενον ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ· ἠρώτησεν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ ἄνθρωπος λέγων Τί ζητεῖς;
A man found him while he was wanderingⓘ in the field; that man asked him: What are you seeking?ⓘ
16
ויאמר את אחי אנכי מבקש הגידה נא לי איפה הם רעים
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου ζητῶ· ἀνάγγειλόν μοι, ποῦ βόσκουσιν.
He answered: My brothers I am seekingⓘ. Tell me where they are pasturingⓘ.
17
ויאמר האיש נסעו מזה כי שמעתי אמרים נלכה דתינה וילך יוסף אחר אחיו וימצאם בדתן
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Ἀπήρκασιν ἐντεῦθεν· ἤκουσα γὰρ αὐτῶν λεγόντων Πορευθῶμεν εἰς Δωθαιμ. καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ιωσηφ κατόπισθεν τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ εὗρεν αὐτοὺς ἐν Δωθαιμ.
That man said: They have moved on from here, for I heard that they were sayingⓘ: Let us go to Dotànⓘ. And Yosèf went after his brothers and found them at Dotàn.

ויראו אתו מרחק ובטרם יקרב אליהם ויתנכלו אתו להמיתו
προεῖδον δὲ αὐτὸν μακρόθεν πρὸ τοῦ ἐγγίσαι αὐτὸν πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐπονηρεύοντο τοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι αὐτόν.
They saw him from afarⓘ, and before he drew near to them they plotted against him to put him to deathⓘ.
19
ויאמרו איש אל אחיו הנה בעל החלמות הלזה בא
εἶπαν δὲ ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ Ἰδοὺ ὁ ἐνυπνιαστὴς ἐκεῖνος ἔρχεται·
They said one to the brother: Behold, here comesⓘ the ba'al hachalomòtⓘ.
20
ועתה לכו ונהרגהו ונשלכהו באחד הברות ואמרנו חיה רעה אכלתהו ונראה מה יהיו חלמתיו
νῦν οὖν δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ ῥίψωμεν αὐτὸν εἰς ἕνα τῶν λάκκων καὶ ἐροῦμεν Θηρίον πονηρὸν κατέφαγεν αὐτόν· καὶ ὀψόμεθα, τί ἔσται τὰ ἐνύπνια αὐτοῦ.
Now come, let us kill him and let us throw him into one of the cisternsⓘ; we will say: a fierce beast has devoured himⓘ. And we will see what becomes of his dreamsⓘ.

וישמע ראובן ויצלהו מידם ויאמר לא נכנו נפש
ἀκούσας δὲ Ρουβην ἐξείλατο αὐτὸν ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν καὶ εἶπεν Οὐ πατάξομεν αὐτὸν εἰς ψυχήν.
Re'uvèn heardⓘ and rescued him from their handsⓘ and said: Let us not strike him in the soulⓘ.
22
ויאמר אלהם ראובן אל תשפכו דם השליכו אתו אל הבור הזה אשר במדבר ויד אל תשלחו בו למען הציל אתו מידם להשיבו אל אביו
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ρουβην Μὴ ἐκχέητε αἷμα· ἐμβάλετε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν λάκκον τοῦτον τὸν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, χεῖρα δὲ μὴ ἐπενέγκητε αὐτῷ· ὅπως ἐξέληται αὐτὸν ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν καὶ ἀποδῷ αὐτὸν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ.
Re'uvèn said to them: Shed no bloodⓘ; throw him into this cistern that is in the wildernessⓘ, but the hand do not stretch out upon himⓘ — because he intended to save him from their hands in order to bring him back to the father.

ויהי כאשר בא יוסף אל אחיו ויפשיטו את יוסף את כתנתו את כתנת הפסים אשר עליו
ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἦλθεν Ιωσηφ πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ, ἐξέδυσαν τὸν Ιωσηφ τὸν χιτῶνα τὸν ποικίλον τὸν περὶ αὐτὸν
And it happened, when Yosèf came to the brothers: they stripped off the tunicⓘ, the kuttònet passìmⓘ that he had on him.

ויקחהו וישלכו אתו הברה והבור רק אין בו מים
καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἔρριψαν εἰς τὸν λάκκον· ὁ δὲ λάκκος κενός, ὕδωρ οὐκ εἶχεν.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And taking him they threw him into the cisternⓘ; now the cistern was emptyⓘ, it had no waterⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——They took him and threw him into the cisternⓘ; the cistern was emptyⓘ, there was no water in itⓘ.

וישבו לאכל לחם וישאו עיניהם ויראו והנה ארחת ישמעאלים באה מגלעד וגמליהם נשאים נכאת וצרי ולט הולכים להוריד מצרימה
Ἐκάθισαν δὲ φαγεῖν ἄρτον καὶ ἀναβλέψαντες τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς εἶδον, καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁδοιπόροι Ισμαηλῖται ἤρχοντο ἐκ Γαλααδ, καὶ αἱ κάμηλοι αὐτῶν ἔγεμον θυμιαμάτων καὶ ῥητίνης καὶ στακτῆς· ἐπορεύοντο δὲ καταγαγεῖν εἰς Αἴγυπτον.
They sat down to eat breadⓘ; they lifted their eyes and saw: behold, a caravan of Yishme'elìmⓘ that was coming from Gil'àd, with the camels laden with nekho'àt, tzorì velòtⓘ, on their way to carry them down to Egypt.

ויאמר יהודה אל אחיו מה בצע כי נהרג את אחינו וכסינו את דמו
εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ Τί χρήσιμον, ἐὰν ἀποκτείνωμεν τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν καὶ κρύψωμεν τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ;
Said Yehudàhⓘ to the brothers: What gainⓘ if we kill the brother and cover his bloodⓘ?
27
לכו ונמכרנו לישמעאלים וידנו אל תהי בו כי אחינו בשרנו הוא וישמעו אחיו
δεῦτε ἀποδώμεθα αὐτὸν τοῖς Ισμαηλίταις τούτοις, αἱ δὲ χεῖρες ἡμῶν μὴ ἔστωσαν ἐπ’ αὐτόν, ὅτι ἀδελφὸς ἡμῶν καὶ σὰρξ ἡμῶν ἐστιν. ἤκουσαν δὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ.
Come, let us sell him to the Yishme'elìm and let our hand not be upon himⓘ, for he is our brother, our fleshⓘ. The brothers listened.
28
ויעברו אנשים מדינים סחרים וימשכו ויעלו את יוסף מן הבור וימכרו את יוסף לישמעאלים בעשרים כסף ויביאו את יוסף מצרימה
καὶ παρεπορεύοντο οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ Μαδιηναῖοι οἱ ἔμποροι, καὶ ἐξείλκυσαν καὶ ἀνεβίβασαν τὸν Ιωσηφ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου καὶ ἀπέδοντο τὸν Ιωσηφ τοῖς Ισμαηλίταις εἴκοσι χρυσῶν, καὶ κατήγαγον τὸν Ιωσηφ εἰς Αἴγυπτον.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And there passed the Midianite men, the merchantsⓘ; and they drew Yosèf up out of the cisternⓘ, and they sold Yosèf to the Ishmaelites for twenty of goldⓘ, and they led Yosèf to Egypt.—— Masoretic (MT) ——There passed Midianite menⓘ, merchants; they drew Yosèf up out of the cisternⓘ and sold Yosèf to the Yishme'elìm for twenty of silverⓘ. And they carried Yosèf to Egypt.

וישב ראובן אל הבור והנה אין יוסף בבור ויקרע את בגדיו
ἀνέστρεψεν δὲ Ρουβην ἐπὶ τὸν λάκκον καὶ οὐχ ὁρᾷ τὸν Ιωσηφ ἐν τῷ λάκκῳ καὶ διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ.
Re'uvèn returned to the cisternⓘ: behold, Yosèf was not in the cistern. He tore his garmentsⓘ.
30
וישב אל אחיו ויאמר הילד איננו ואני אנה אני בא
καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Τὸ παιδάριον οὐκ ἔστιν· ἐγὼ δὲ ποῦ πορεύομαι ἔτι;
He returned to the brothers and said: The boy is no moreⓘ! And I — where shall I go?ⓘ
31
ויקחו את כתנת יוסף וישחטו שעיר עזים ויטבלו את הכתנת בדם
Λαβόντες δὲ τὸν χιτῶνα τοῦ Ιωσηφ ἔσφαξαν ἔριφον αἰγῶν καὶ ἐμόλυναν τὸν χιτῶνα τῷ αἵματι.
They took the tunic of Yosèfⓘ, slaughtered a se'ìr izzìmⓘ and dipped the tunic in the blood.
32
וישלחו את כתנת הפסים ויביאו אל אביהם ויאמרו זאת מצאנו הכר נא הכתנת בנך הוא אם לא
καὶ ἀπέστειλαν τὸν χιτῶνα τὸν ποικίλον καὶ εἰσήνεγκαν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτῶν καὶ εἶπαν Τοῦτον εὕρομεν· ἐπίγνωθι εἰ χιτὼν τοῦ υἱοῦ σού ἐστιν ἢ οὔ.
They sentⓘ the kuttònet passìm and brought it to the father, and said: This we have foundⓘ; recognizeⓘ whether it is the tunic of your son or not.
33
ויכירה ויאמר כתנת בני חיה רעה אכלתהו טרף טרף יוסף
καὶ ἐπέγνω αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν Χιτὼν τοῦ υἱοῦ μού ἐστιν· θηρίον πονηρὸν κατέφαγεν αὐτόν, θηρίον ἥρπασεν τὸν Ιωσηφ.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And he recognized itⓘ and said: It is the tunic of my sonⓘ; a fierce beast has devoured himⓘ, a beast has carried Yosèf offⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——He recognized itⓘ and said: The tunic of my son! A fierce beast has devoured himⓘ; torn, torn is Yosèfⓘ.

ויקרע יעקב שמלתיו וישם שק במתניו ויתאבל על בנו ימים רבים
διέρρηξεν δὲ Ιακωβ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπέθετο σάκκον ἐπὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπένθει τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἡμέρας πολλάς.
Yaaqòv tore his garmentsⓘ, he girded sackclothⓘ on his loins and mourned for his son many daysⓘ.
35
ויקמו כל בניו וכל בנתיו לנחמו וימאן להתנחם ויאמר כי ארד אל בני אבל שאלה ויבך אתו אביו
συνήχθησαν δὲ πάντες οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες καὶ ἦλθον παρακαλέσαι αὐτόν, καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν παρακαλεῖσθαι λέγων ὅτι Καταβήσομαι πρὸς τὸν υἱόν μου πενθῶν εἰς ᾅδου. καὶ ἔκλαυσεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ. –
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——All his sons gathered and the daughtersⓘ and came to console himⓘ, but he would not be consoledⓘ, saying: I will go down to my son, in mourning, to Hadesⓘ. And his father wept for himⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——All his sons arose and all his daughtersⓘ to console himⓘ, but he refused to be consoledⓘ and said: For I will go down to my son in mourning to She'òlⓘ. And his father wept for himⓘ.

והמדנים מכרו אתו אל מצרים לפוטיפר סריס פרעה שר הטבחים
οἱ δὲ Μαδιηναῖοι ἀπέδοντο τὸν Ιωσηφ εἰς Αἴγυπτον τῷ Πετεφρη τῷ σπάδοντι Φαραω, ἀρχιμαγείρῳ.
And the Midyanìm sold himⓘ in Egypt to Potìfarⓘ, sarìs of Pharaohⓘ, chief of the slaughterersⓘ. Yosèf descends to the bottom of the abyss of the world: the thread of destiny holds.
