ויהי בעת ההוא וירד יהודה מאת אחיו ויט עד איש עדלמי ושמו חירה
Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ κατέβη Ιουδας ἀπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀφίκετο ἕως πρὸς ἄνθρωπόν τινα Οδολλαμίτην, ᾧ ὄνομα Ιρας.
And it came to pass at that timeⓘ that Yehudàh went downⓘ from his brothers and pitched his tent near a man of Adulàmⓘ, whose name was Chiràh.

וירא שם יהודה בת איש כנעני ושמו שוע ויקחה ויבא אליה
καὶ εἶδεν ἐκεῖ Ιουδας θυγατέρα ἀνθρώπου Χαναναίου, ᾗ ὄνομα Σαυα, καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτὴν καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτήν.
There Yehudàh saw the daughter of a Canaaniteⓘ man, whose name was Shuàⓘ; he took her and went in to her.

ותהר ותלד בן ויקרא את שמו ער
καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ηρ.
She conceived and bore a son; he called his name Erⓘ.
4
ותהר עוד ותלד בן ותקרא את שמו אונן
καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτι ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Αυναν.
She conceived again and bore a son; sheⓘ called his name Onànⓘ.

ותסף עוד ותלד בן ותקרא את שמו שלה והיה בכזיב בלדתה אתו
καὶ προσθεῖσα ἔτι ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Σηλωμ. αὐτὴ δὲ ἦν ἐν Χασβι, ἡνίκα ἔτεκεν αὐτούς.
She conceived once more and bore a son; she called his name Shelàhⓘ. And he was at Kezìvⓘ when she bore himⓘ.

ויקח יהודה אשה לער בכורו ושמה תמר
καὶ ἔλαβεν Ιουδας γυναῖκα Ηρ τῷ πρωτοτόκῳ αὐτοῦ, ᾗ ὄνομα Θαμαρ.
Yehudàh took a wife for Er his firstborn; her name was Tamàrⓘ.

ויהי ער בכור יהודה רע בעיני יהוה וימתהו יהוה
ἐγένετο δὲ Ηρ πρωτότοκος Ιουδα πονηρὸς ἐναντίον κυρίου, καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός.
And Er, Yehudàh's firstborn, was wickedⓘ in the eyes of the Tetragrammatonⓘ; and the Tetragrammaton put him to deathⓘ.

ויאמר יהודה לאונן בא אל אשת אחיך ויבם אתה והקם זרע לאחיך
εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας τῷ Αυναν Εἴσελθε πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου καὶ γάμβρευσαι αὐτὴν καὶ ἀνάστησον σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου.
Then Yehudàh said to Onàn: «Go in to your brother's wife, perform the levirate with herⓘ, and raise up offspring for your brother».

וידע אונן כי לא לו יהיה הזרע והיה אם בא אל אשת אחיו ושחת ארצה לבלתי נתן זרע לאחיו
γνοὺς δὲ Αυναν ὅτι οὐκ αὐτῷ ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα, ἐγίνετο ὅταν εἰσήρχετο πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, ἐξέχεεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν τοῦ μὴ δοῦναι σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ.
Onàn knew that the offspring would not be hisⓘ; and whenever he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled on the groundⓘ, so as not to give offspring to his brother.

וירע בעיני יהוה אשר עשה וימת גם אתו
πονηρὸν δὲ ἐφάνη ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ ὅτι ἐποίησεν τοῦτο, καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν καὶ τοῦτον.
What he did was wickedⓘ in the eyes of the Tetragrammatonⓘ; and he put him also to death — the gam («also») closes the symmetry with v. 7: two sons, two deaths.

ויאמר יהודה לתמר כלתו שבי אלמנה בית אביך עד יגדל שלה בני כי אמר פן ימות גם הוא כאחיו ותלך תמר ותשב בית אביה
εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας Θαμαρ τῇ νύμφῃ αὐτοῦ Κάθου χήρα ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός σου, ἕως μέγας γένηται Σηλωμ ὁ υἱός μου· εἶπεν γάρ Μήποτε ἀποθάνῃ καὶ οὗτος ὥσπερ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ. ἀπελθοῦσα δὲ Θαμαρ ἐκάθητο ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς.
Yehudàh said to Tamàr his daughter-in-law: «Remain a widow in your father's house»ⓘ, until **Shelàh my son is grown». For he thought: perhaps he too will die like his brothersⓘ». Tamàr went and remained in her father's house.

וירבו הימים ותמת בת שוע אשת יהודה וינחם יהודה ויעל על גזזי צאנו הוא וחירה רעהו העדלמי תמנתה
Ἐπληθύνθησαν δὲ αἱ ἡμέραι καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαυα ἡ γυνὴ Ιουδα· καὶ παρακληθεὶς Ιουδας ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τοὺς κείροντας τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς καὶ Ιρας ὁ ποιμὴν αὐτοῦ ὁ Οδολλαμίτης, εἰς Θαμνα.
The days were multipliedⓘ; the daughter of Shuà, Yehudàh's wife, diedⓘ. Yehudàh was comforted (wayyinnachem, niphal: an inner consolation that marks the end of formal mourning) and went up to the shearers of his flockⓘ — he and Chiràh his companion the Adullamiteⓘ — toward Timnàh.

ויגד לתמר לאמר הנה חמיך עלה תמנתה לגז צאנו
καὶ ἀπηγγέλη Θαμαρ τῇ νύμφῃ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Ἰδοὺ ὁ πενθερός σου ἀναβαίνει εἰς Θαμνα κεῖραι τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ.
It was told to Tamàr his daughter-in-lawⓘ: «Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnàh to shear his flock».

ותסר בגדי אלמנותה מעליה ותכס בצעיף ותתעלף ותשב בפתח עינים אשר על דרך תמנתה כי ראתה כי גדל שלה והוא לא נתנה לו לאשה
καὶ περιελομένη τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς χηρεύσεως ἀφ’ ἑαυτῆς περιεβάλετο θέριστρον καὶ ἐκαλλωπίσατο καὶ ἐκάθισεν πρὸς ταῖς πύλαις Αιναν, ἥ ἐστιν ἐν παρόδῳ Θαμνα· εἶδεν γὰρ ὅτι μέγας γέγονεν Σηλωμ, αὐτὸς δὲ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And, having taken off the garments of her widowhoodⓘ, she wrapped herself in a summer mantleⓘ and adorned herselfⓘ; and she sat at the gates of Enànⓘ, which is on the road to Timnà; for she had seen that Shelòm had grown up, and yet he had not given her to him as wife.—— Masoretic (MT) ——She took off the garments of her widowhoodⓘ from herself, covered herself with a veilⓘ, wrapped herselfⓘ and sat at the entrance of Enàyimⓘ on the road to Timnàh. For she had seen that Shelàh had grown up and she had not been given to him as wife — Tamàr's right has been denied; her act is a response to the wrong suffered.

ויראה יהודה ויחשבה לזונה כי כסתה פניה
καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν Ιουδας ἔδοξεν αὐτὴν πόρνην εἶναι· κατεκαλύψατο γὰρ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς, καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνω αὐτήν.
Yehudàh saw her and reckoned her a prostituteⓘ, because she had covered her faceⓘ — and he did not recognize herⓘ.

ויט אליה אל הדרך ויאמר הבה נא אבוא אליך כי לא ידע כי כלתו הוא ותאמר מה תתן לי כי תבוא אלי
ἐξέκλινεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν τὴν ὁδὸν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ἔασόν με εἰσελθεῖν πρὸς σέ· οὐ γὰρ ἔγνω ὅτι ἡ νύμφη αὐτοῦ ἐστιν. ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τί μοι δώσεις, ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃς πρός με;
He turned aside to her by the road and said: «Hàvàh-nà (come now, I pray you), let me come in to you» — he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said: «What will you give me for coming in to me?».

ויאמר אנכי אשלח גדי עזים מן הצאן ותאמר אם תתן ערבון עד שלחך
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἐγώ σοι ἀποστελῶ ἔριφον αἰγῶν ἐκ τῶν προβάτων. ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Ἐὰν δῷς ἀρραβῶνα ἕως τοῦ ἀποστεῖλαί σε.
He said: «I will send you a kid of the goatsⓘ from the flock». She said: «Only if you give me a pledgeⓘ until you send it».

ויאמר מה הערבון אשר אתן לך ותאמר חתמך ופתילך ומטך אשר בידך ויתן לה ויבא אליה ותהר לו
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Τίνα τὸν ἀρραβῶνά σοι δώσω; ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τὸν δακτύλιόν σου καὶ τὸν ὁρμίσκον καὶ τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν ἐν τῇ χειρί σου. καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῇ καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτήν, καὶ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔλαβεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ.
He said: «What is the pledge that I am to give you?». She said: «Your seal, your cord, and your staff»ⓘ. He gave them to her and went in to her; she conceived by himⓘ.

ותקם ותלך ותסר צעיפה מעליה ותלבש בגדי אלמנותה
καὶ ἀναστᾶσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ περιείλατο τὸ θέριστρον ἀφ’ ἑαυτῆς καὶ ἐνεδύσατο τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς χηρεύσεως αὐτῆς.
Then she arose, went away, took off the veilⓘ from herself and put on again the garments of her widowhood: she returns to the condition of waiting, the secret intact.

וישלח יהודה את גדי העזים ביד רעהו העדלמי לקחת הערבון מיד האשה ולא מצאה
ἀπέστειλεν δὲ Ιουδας τὸν ἔριφον ἐξ αἰγῶν ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ ποιμένος αὐτοῦ τοῦ Οδολλαμίτου κομίσασθαι τὸν ἀρραβῶνα παρὰ τῆς γυναικός, καὶ οὐχ εὗρεν αὐτήν.
Yehudàh sent the kid by the hand of his companion the Adullamiteⓘ to recover the pledge from the woman, but he did not find her.

וישאל את אנשי מקמה לאמר איה הקדשה הוא בעינים על הדרך ויאמרו לא היתה בזה קדשה
ἐπηρώτησεν δὲ τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς ἐκ τοῦ τόπου Ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ πόρνη ἡ γενομένη ἐν Αιναν ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ; καὶ εἶπαν Οὐκ ἦν ἐνταῦθα πόρνη.
He asked the men of the place: «Where is the qedeshàhⓘ who was at Enàyimⓘ by the road?». They answered him: «There has never been a qedeshàh here».

וישב אל יהודה ויאמר לא מצאתיה וגם אנשי המקום אמרו לא היתה בזה קדשה
καὶ ἀπεστράφη πρὸς Ιουδαν καὶ εἶπεν Οὐχ εὗρον, καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου λέγουσιν μὴ εἶναι ὧδε πόρνην.
He returned to Yehudàh and said: «I did not find her; and the men of the place also say that there has been no qedeshàhⓘ there».

ויאמר יהודה תקח לה פן נהיה לבוז הנה שלחתי הגדי הזה ואתה לא מצאתה
εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας Ἐχέτω αὐτά, ἀλλὰ μήποτε καταγελασθῶμεν· ἐγὼ μὲν ἀπέσταλκα τὸν ἔριφον τοῦτον, σὺ δὲ οὐχ εὕρηκας.
Yehudàh said: «Let her keep what she has»ⓘ, lest we become an object of mockery (pèn nihyèh lavùz): I sent the kid, it is not my fault».

ויהי כמשלש חדשים ויגד ליהודה לאמר זנתה תמר כלתך וגם הנה הרה לזנונים ויאמר יהודה הוציאוה ותשרף
Ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τρίμηνον ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Ιουδα λέγοντες Ἐκπεπόρνευκεν Θαμαρ ἡ νύμφη σου καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχει ἐκ πορνείας. εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας Ἐξαγάγετε αὐτήν, καὶ κατακαυθήτω.
After about three monthsⓘ it was told to Yehudàh: «Tamàr your daughter-in-law has played the prostituteⓘ, and behold, she is pregnant by fornication». Yehudàh said: «Have her brought out and let her be burnedⓘ».

הוא מוצאת והיא שלחה אל חמיה לאמר לאיש אשר אלה לו אנכי הרה ותאמר הכר נא למי החתמת והפתילים והמטה האלה
αὐτὴ δὲ ἀγομένη ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τὸν πενθερὸν αὐτῆς λέγουσα Ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, τίνος ταῦτά ἐστιν, ἐγὼ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχω. καὶ εἶπεν Ἐπίγνωθι, τίνος ὁ δακτύλιος καὶ ὁ ὁρμίσκος καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος αὕτη.
As she was being brought outⓘ, she sent word to her father-in-law: «I am pregnant by the man to whom these things belongⓘ». And she said: «Recognize, I pray you, to whom this seal, this cord, and this staff belong»ⓘ.

ויכר יהודה ויאמר צדקה ממני כי על כן לא נתתיה לשלה בני ולא יסף עוד לדעתה
ἐπέγνω δὲ Ιουδας καὶ εἶπεν Δεδικαίωται Θαμαρ ἢ ἐγώ, οὗ εἵνεκεν οὐκ ἔδωκα αὐτὴν Σηλωμ τῷ υἱῷ μου. καὶ οὐ προσέθετο ἔτι τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτήν.
Yehudàh recognized themⓘ and said: «She is more righteous than I»ⓘ, «because I did not give her to Shelàh my son». The reversal is total: the judge becomes the guilty one. And he did not lie with her againⓘ.

ויהי בעת לדתה והנה תאומים בבטנה
Ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἔτικτεν, καὶ τῇδε ἦν δίδυμα ἐν τῇ γαστρὶ αὐτῆς.
At the time of the delivery it appeared that there were twinsⓘ in her womb.

ויהי בלדתה ויתן יד ותקח המילדת ותקשר על ידו שני לאמר זה יצא ראשנה
ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τίκτειν αὐτὴν ὁ εἷς προεξήνεγκεν τὴν χεῖρα· λαβοῦσα δὲ ἡ μαῖα ἔδησεν ἐπὶ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ κόκκινον λέγουσα Οὗτος ἐξελεύσεται πρότερος.
As she was giving birth, one put out his handⓘ; the midwife (hamyallèdet)ⓘ took it and bound around it a scarlet threadⓘ, saying: «This one came out first».

ויהי כמשיב ידו והנה יצא אחיו ותאמר מה פרצת עליך פרץ ויקרא שמו פרץ
ὡς δὲ ἐπισυνήγαγεν τὴν χεῖρα, καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ. ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τί διεκόπη διὰ σὲ φραγμός; καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Φαρες.
But as he drew back his handⓘ, behold, his brother came out; and the midwife said: «How you have broken through upon yourself — Pèretz!»ⓘ. And she called his name Pèretz.
30
ואחר יצא אחיו אשר על ידו השני ויקרא שמו זרח
καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ, ἐφ’ ᾧ ἦν ἐπὶ τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ κόκκινον· καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ζαρα.
Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his handⓘ; and she called his name Zèrachⓘ.
