וישא יעקב רגליו וילך ארצה בני קדם
Καὶ ἐξάρας Ιακωβ τοὺς πόδας ἐπορεύθη εἰς γῆν ἀνατολῶν πρὸς Λαβαν τὸν υἱὸν Βαθουηλ τοῦ Σύρου ἀδελφὸν δὲ Ρεβεκκας μητρὸς Ιακωβ καὶ Ησαυ.
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And Yaʿaqòv lifted up his feetⓘ and journeyed toward the land of the Eastⓘ, to Lavàn son of Betuèl the Syrian, brother moreover of Rivqàh mother of Yaʿaqòv and of Esàwⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——And Yaʿaqòv lifted up his feetⓘ and went toward the land of the sons of the Eastⓘ, to Lavàn son of Betuèl the Aramean, brother of Rivqàh mother of Yaʿaqòv and of Esàwⓘ.

וירא והנה באר בשדה והנה שם שלשה עדרי צאן רבצים עליה כי מן הבאר ההוא ישקו העדרים והאבן גדלה על פי הבאר
καὶ ὁρᾷ καὶ ἰδοὺ φρέαρ ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ, ἦσαν δὲ ἐκεῖ τρία ποίμνια προβάτων ἀναπαυόμενα ἐπ’ αὐτοῦ· ἐκ γὰρ τοῦ φρέατος ἐκείνου ἐπότιζον τὰ ποίμνια, λίθος δὲ ἦν μέγας ἐπὶ τῷ στόματι τοῦ φρέατος,
And he sawⓘ: behold, a wellⓘ in the fieldⓘ, and three flocks of sheep lying downⓘ beside it, for from that well the flocks were watered; and a great stoneⓘ was on the mouth of the well.

ונאספו שמה כל העדרים וגללו את האבן מעל פי הבאר והשקו את הצאן והשיבו את האבן על פי הבאר למקמה
καὶ συνήγοντο ἐκεῖ πάντα τὰ ποίμνια καὶ ἀπεκύλιον τὸν λίθον ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ φρέατος καὶ ἐπότιζον τὰ πρόβατα καὶ ἀπεκαθίστων τὸν λίθον ἐπὶ τὸ στόμα τοῦ φρέατος εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ.
There all the flocks would gather; they would roll the stoneⓘ from the mouth of the well, water the sheep, and put the stone back in its placeⓘ on the mouth of the well.

ויאמר להם יעקב אחי מאין אתם ויאמרו מחרן אנחנו
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ιακωβ Ἀδελφοί, πόθεν ἐστὲ ὑμεῖς; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἐκ Χαρραν ἐσμέν.
And Yaʿaqòv said to them: «My brothersⓘ, where are you from?» And they answered: «We are from Charànⓘ.»

ויאמר להם הידעתם את לבן בן נחור ויאמרו ידענו
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Γινώσκετε Λαβαν τὸν υἱὸν Ναχωρ; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Γινώσκομεν.
And he said to them: «Do you know Lavàn son of Nachòrⓘ?» And they: «We know him.»

ויאמר להם השלום לו ויאמרו שלום והנה רחל בתו באה עם הצאן
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ὑγιαίνει; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ὑγιαίνει. καὶ ἰδοὺ Ραχηλ ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτοῦ ἤρχετο μετὰ τῶν προβάτων.
And he said to them: «Is he wellⓘ?» And they: «Well; and behold Rachèl his daughterⓘ comes with the sheep.»

ויאמר הן עוד היום גדול לא עת האסף המקנה השקו הצאן ולכו רעו
καὶ εἶπεν Ιακωβ Ἔτι ἐστὶν ἡμέρα πολλή, οὔπω ὥρα συναχθῆναι τὰ κτήνη· ποτίσαντες τὰ πρόβατα ἀπελθόντες βόσκετε.
And he said: «Behold, the day is still highⓘ; it is not the hour to gather the livestock: water the sheep and go to pasture.»

ויאמרו לא נוכל עד אשר יאספו כל העדרים וגללו את האבן מעל פי הבאר והשקינו הצאן
οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Οὐ δυνησόμεθα ἕως τοῦ συναχθῆναι πάντας τοὺς ποιμένας καὶ ἀποκυλίσωσιν τὸν λίθον ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ φρέατος, καὶ ποτιοῦμεν τὰ πρόβατα.
And they answered: «We cannot, until all the flocksⓘ are gathered and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we will water the sheep.»

עודנו מדבר עמם ורחל באה עם הצאן אשר לאביה כי רעה הוא
ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος αὐτοῖς καὶ Ραχηλ ἡ θυγάτηρ Λαβαν ἤρχετο μετὰ τῶν προβάτων τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς· αὐτὴ γὰρ ἔβοσκεν τὰ πρόβατα τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς.
While he was still speaking with themⓘ, Rachèl came with her father's sheep, for it was she who pastured themⓘ.

ויהי כאשר ראה יעקב את רחל בת לבן אחי אמו ואת צאן לבן אחי אמו ויגש יעקב ויגל את האבן מעל פי הבאר וישק את צאן לבן אחי אמו
ἐγένετο δὲ ὡς εἶδεν Ιακωβ τὴν Ραχηλ θυγατέρα Λαβαν ἀδελφοῦ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ πρόβατα Λαβαν ἀδελφοῦ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ προσελθὼν Ιακωβ ἀπεκύλισεν τὸν λίθον ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος τοῦ φρέατος καὶ ἐπότισεν τὰ πρόβατα Λαβαν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ.
And it came to pass that, when Yaʿaqòv saw Rachèl daughter of Lavàn his mother's brother, and the sheep of Lavàn his mother's brother, he drew nearⓘ, rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of Lavàn his mother's brotherⓘ.

וישק יעקב לרחל וישא את קלו ויבך
καὶ ἐφίλησεν Ιακωβ τὴν Ραχηλ καὶ βοήσας τῇ φωνῇ αὐτοῦ ἔκλαυσεν.
And Yaʿaqòv kissed Rachèlⓘ, lifted up his voice and wept.

ויגד יעקב לרחל כי אחי אביה הוא וכי בן רבקה הוא ותרץ ותגד לאביה
καὶ ἀνήγγειλεν τῇ Ραχηλ ὅτι ἀδελφὸς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς ἐστιν καὶ ὅτι υἱὸς Ρεβεκκας ἐστίν, καὶ δραμοῦσα ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτῆς κατὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα.
And he told Rachèl that he was a kinsman of her fatherⓘ and a son of Rivqàh; and she ran and told her father these thingsⓘ.

ויהי כשמע לבן את שמע יעקב בן אחתו וירץ לקראתו ויחבק לו וינשק לו ויביאהו אל ביתו ויספר ללבן את כל הדברים האלה
ἐγένετο δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν Λαβαν τὸ ὄνομα Ιακωβ τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτοῦ, ἔδραμεν εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ καὶ περιλαβὼν αὐτὸν ἐφίλησεν καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ. καὶ διηγήσατο τῷ Λαβαν πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους.
When Lavàn heard the news of Yaʿaqòvⓘ his sister's son, he ran to meet him, embraced him, kissed him, and led him to his house; and he recounted to Lavàn all these things.

ויאמר לו לבן אך עצמי ובשרי אתה וישב עמו חדש ימים
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Λαβαν Ἐκ τῶν ὀστῶν μου καὶ ἐκ τῆς σαρκός μου εἶ σύ. καὶ ἦν μετ’ αὐτοῦ μῆνα ἡμερῶν.
And Lavàn said to him: «Truly my bone and my fleshⓘ you are.» And he dwelt with him a month of daysⓘ.

ויאמר לבן ליעקב הכי אחי אתה ועבדתני חנם הגידה לי מה משכרתך
Εἶπεν δὲ Λαβαν τῷ Ιακωβ Ὅτι γὰρ ἀδελφός μου εἶ, οὐ δουλεύσεις μοι δωρεάν· ἀπάγγειλόν μοι, τίς ὁ μισθός σού ἐστιν.
And Lavàn said to Yaʿaqòv: «Should it be that because you are my kinsman you serve me for nothingⓘ? Tell me what your wages are.»

וללבן שתי בנות שם הגדלה לאה ושם הקטנה רחל
τῷ δὲ Λαβαν δύο θυγατέρες, ὄνομα τῇ μείζονι Λεια, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ νεωτέρᾳ Ραχηλ·
Now Lavàn had two daughters: the name of the elderⓘ was Leàh, and the name of the youngerⓘ was Rachèl.

ועיני לאה רכות ורחל היתה יפת תאר ויפת מראה
οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ Λειας ἀσθενεῖς, Ραχηλ δὲ καλὴ τῷ εἴδει καὶ ὡραία τῇ ὄψει.
Leàh's eyes were tenderⓘ, while Rachèl was beautiful of form and beautiful of appearanceⓘ.

ויאהב יעקב את רחל ויאמר אעבדך שבע שנים ברחל בתך הקטנה
ἠγάπησεν δὲ Ιακωβ τὴν Ραχηλ καὶ εἶπεν Δουλεύσω σοι ἑπτὰ ἔτη περὶ Ραχηλ τῆς θυγατρός σου τῆς νεωτέρας.
And Yaʿaqòv loved Rachèl and said: «I will serve you seven yearsⓘ for Rachèl, your younger daughter.»

ויאמר לבן טוב תתי אתה לך מתתי אתה לאיש אחר שבה עמדי
εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Λαβαν Βέλτιον δοῦναί με αὐτὴν σοὶ ἢ δοῦναί με αὐτὴν ἀνδρὶ ἑτέρῳ· οἴκησον μετ’ ἐμοῦ.
And Lavàn said to him: «Better to give her to you than to give her to another man; stay with me.»
20
ויעבד יעקב ברחל שבע שנים ויהיו בעיניו כימים אחדים באהבתו אתה
καὶ ἐδούλευσεν Ιακωβ περὶ Ραχηλ ἔτη ἑπτά, καὶ ἦσαν ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὡς ἡμέραι ὀλίγαι παρὰ τὸ ἀγαπᾶν αὐτὸν αὐτήν. –
And Yaʿaqòv served seven years for Rachèl, and they were in his eyes like a few daysⓘ, for the love he bore her.

ויאמר יעקב אל לבן הבה את אשתי כי מלאו ימי ואבואה אליה
εἶπεν δὲ Ιακωβ πρὸς Λαβαν Ἀπόδος τὴν γυναῖκά μου, πεπλήρωνται γὰρ αἱ ἡμέραι μου, ὅπως εἰσέλθω πρὸς αὐτήν.
And Yaʿaqòv said to Lavàn: «Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilledⓘ, and I wish to go in to her.»

ויאסף לבן את כל אנשי המקום ויעש משתה
συνήγαγεν δὲ Λαβαν πάντας τοὺς ἄνδρας τοῦ τόπου καὶ ἐποίησεν γάμον.
And Lavàn gathered all the men of the place and made a feastⓘ.
23
ויהי בערב ויקח את לאה בתו ויבא אתה אליו ויבא אליה
καὶ ἐγένετο ἑσπέρα, καὶ λαβὼν Λαβαν Λειαν τὴν θυγατέρα αὐτοῦ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὴν πρὸς Ιακωβ, καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὴν Ιακωβ.
And evening came; Lavàn took Leàh his daughter, led her to himⓘ, and he went in to her.
24
ויתן לבן לה את זלפה שפחתו ללאה בתו שפחה
ἔδωκεν δὲ Λαβαν Λεια τῇ θυγατρὶ αὐτοῦ Ζελφαν τὴν παιδίσκην αὐτοῦ αὐτῇ παιδίσκην.
And Lavàn gave to Leàh his daughter Zilpàhⓘ his maidservant, as a maidservant.

ויהי בבקר והנה הוא לאה ויאמר אל לבן מה זאת עשית לי הלא ברחל עבדתי עמך ולמה רמיתני
ἐγένετο δὲ πρωί, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦν Λεια. εἶπεν δὲ Ιακωβ τῷ Λαβαν Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησάς μοι; οὐ περὶ Ραχηλ ἐδούλευσα παρὰ σοί; καὶ ἵνα τί παρελογίσω με;
And in the morning, behold: it was Leàhⓘ! And he said to Lavàn: «What have you done to me? Did I not serve you for Rachèl? Why have you deceived meⓘ?»

ויאמר לבן לא יעשה כן במקומנו לתת הצעירה לפני הבכירה
εἶπεν δὲ Λαβαν Οὐκ ἔστιν οὕτως ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ἡμῶν, δοῦναι τὴν νεωτέραν πρὶν ἢ τὴν πρεσβυτέραν·
And Lavàn answered: «It is not done thus, in our place, to give the younger before the firstbornⓘ.»
27
מלא שבע זאת ונתנה לך גם את זאת בעבדה אשר תעבד עמדי עוד שבע שנים אחרות
συντέλεσον οὖν τὰ ἕβδομα ταύτης, καὶ δώσω σοι καὶ ταύτην ἀντὶ τῆς ἐργασίας, ἧς ἐργᾷ παρ’ ἐμοὶ ἔτι ἑπτὰ ἔτη ἕτερα.
Complete the nuptial weekⓘ of this one, and I will give you also the other, for the serviceⓘ which you will render with me another seven years.
28
ויעש יעקב כן וימלא שבע זאת ויתן לו את רחל בתו לו לאשה
ἐποίησεν δὲ Ιακωβ οὕτως καὶ ἀνεπλήρωσεν τὰ ἕβδομα ταύτης, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ Λαβαν Ραχηλ τὴν θυγατέρα αὐτοῦ αὐτῷ γυναῖκα.
And Yaʿaqòv did so, completed her week; and Rachèl daughter of Lavàn was given to him as wife.
29
ויתן לבן לרחל בתו את בלהה שפחתו לה לשפחה
ἔδωκεν δὲ Λαβαν Ραχηλ τῇ θυγατρὶ αὐτοῦ Βαλλαν τὴν παιδίσκην αὐτοῦ αὐτῇ παιδίσκην.
And Lavàn gave to Rachèl his daughter Bilhàhⓘ his maidservant, as a maidservant.
30
ויבא גם אל רחל ויאהב גם את רחל מלאה ויעבד עמו עוד שבע שנים אחרות
καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς Ραχηλ· ἠγάπησεν δὲ Ραχηλ μᾶλλον ἢ Λειαν· καὶ ἐδούλευσεν αὐτῷ ἑπτὰ ἔτη ἕτερα.
And he went in also to Rachèlⓘ, and he loved Rachèl more than Leàh; and he served with him another seven years.
31
וירא יהוה כי שנואה לאה ויפתח את רחמה ורחל עקרה
Ἰδὼν δὲ κύριος ὅτι μισεῖται Λεια, ἤνοιξεν τὴν μήτραν αὐτῆς· Ραχηλ δὲ ἦν στεῖρα.
And the Tetragrammatonⓘ saw that Leàh was hatedⓘ, and opened her wombⓘ; Rachèl, on the other hand, was barren.
32
ותהר לאה ותלד בן ותקרא שמו ראובן כי אמרה כי ראה יהוה בעניי כי עתה יאהבני אישי
καὶ συνέλαβεν Λεια καὶ ἔτεκεν υἱὸν τῷ Ιακωβ· ἐκάλεσεν δὲ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ρουβην λέγουσα Διότι εἶδέν μου κύριος τὴν ταπείνωσιν· νῦν με ἀγαπήσει ὁ ἀνήρ μου.
And Leàh conceived and bore a son and named him Reuvènⓘ, saying: «The Tetragrammatonⓘ has seen my humiliationⓘ; now my husband will love me.»
33
ותהר עוד ותלד בן ותאמר כי שמע יהוה כי שנואה אנכי ויתן לי גם את זה ותקרא שמו שמעון
καὶ συνέλαβεν πάλιν Λεια καὶ ἔτεκεν υἱὸν δεύτερον τῷ Ιακωβ καὶ εἶπεν Ὅτι ἤκουσεν κύριος ὅτι μισοῦμαι, καὶ προσέδωκέν μοι καὶ τοῦτον· ἐκάλεσεν δὲ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Συμεων.
And she conceived again and bore a son and said: «The Tetragrammatonⓘ has heard that I am hated»; and she named him Shimʿònⓘ.

ותהר עוד ותלד בן ותאמר עתה הפעם ילוה אישי אלי כי ילדתי לו שלשה בנים על כן קרא שמו לוי
καὶ συνέλαβεν ἔτι καὶ ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ εἶπεν Ἐν τῷ νῦν καιρῷ πρὸς ἐμοῦ ἔσται ὁ ἀνήρ μου, ἔτεκον γὰρ αὐτῷ τρεῖς υἱούς· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Λευι.
And she conceived again and bore a son and said: «Now this time my husband will join himself to me, for I have borne him three sons»; therefore she named him Lewìⓘ.

ותהר עוד ותלד בן ותאמר הפעם אודה את יהוה על כן קראה שמו יהודה ותעמד מלדת
καὶ συλλαβοῦσα ἔτι ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ εἶπεν Νῦν ἔτι τοῦτο ἐξομολογήσομαι κυρίῳ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ιουδα. καὶ ἔστη τοῦ τίκτειν.
And she conceived again and bore a son and said: «This time I will praise the Tetragrammatonⓘ»; therefore she named him Yehudàhⓘ. And she ceased bearingⓘ.
