Orthodox Reading
1
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And Yaaqòv lifted his gaze — anablépsas — and saw: and behold, Esau, his brotherⓘ, and with him four hundred men. And Yaaqòv apportionedⓘ the children among Leàh and Rachèl and the two maidservants.—— Masoretic (MT) ——And Yaaqòv lifted up his eyesⓘ and saw: and behold, Esau was advancing, and with him four hundred men. He dividedⓘ the children among Leàh and Rachèl and the two concubine-maidservantsⓘ.
2
He set the shefachòt and their children at the front, Leàh and her children in the middle, and Rachèl and Yosèf lastⓘ — the order reflects a hierarchy of love: the more beloved, the more protected in the last place of retreat.
3
And he himself passed ahead of all of them — an act of courage after the long cunning — and bowed down to the groundⓘ seven times, prostrations cadenced like a psalm, until he drew nearⓘ to his brother.
4
And Esau ran to meet him — vaiyàratzⓘ — he embraced him, fell upon his neck and kissed himⓘ; and they both wept.
5
And he lifted up his eyes, saw the women and the children and said: «Who are these to you?». And he answered: «The children with whom God (Elohìm) has graced your servantⓘ» — every child is a gift of grace, not a conquest.
6
And the shefachòt drew near with their children and bowed downⓘ.
7
And Leàh too drew near with her children and they bowed down; and then Yosèf and Rachèl drew near and bowed down — Yosèf named before Rachèl: the mother protects the son by pushing him forward.
8
And he said: «What to you is all this encampment (hamachanèh hazzèh)ⓘ that I have met (pagàshti)ⓘ?». And he said: «To find chen (grace)ⓘ in the eyes of my lord (adòni)ⓘ».
9
And Esau said: «I have much (yesh li ràv)ⓘ, my brother; let what is yours remain yours» — a generous refusal, abundance as a gesture of peace.
10
And Yaaqòv said: «No, I pray you — al nàⓘ — if I have found chen (grace) in your eyes, take my gift (minchàh)ⓘ from my hand, since I have seen your face as one sees the face of God (Elohìm) — kir'òt penèi Elohìmⓘ: a face transfigured by reconciliation — and you have received me with favor (vatirtzèni)ⓘ».
11
«Take, I pray you, my blessing (berakhatì)ⓘ which I have brought to you, since **God (Elohìm) has graced me**ⓘ and since I have everything (yesh li kòl)ⓘ». And he urged him (vayiftzàr, affectionate pressure)ⓘ and he took it.
12
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And he said: «Strike the tents, we shall set out on the way — apárantes poreusómetha — along the straight roadⓘ».—— Masoretic (MT) ——And he said: «Let us depart and go — nas'à venelkhàⓘ — I will walk before youⓘ».
13
And he said to him: «My lord knows that the children are tenderⓘ and the sheep and the oxen that are nursing (alòt)ⓘ weigh upon me; if I were to drive them a single dayⓘ, all the flocks would die».
14
«Let my lord, I pray, pass on ahead of his servant, and I will move slowly (etnahalèh le'itì)ⓘ at the pace of the labor (lereghèl hammelakhàh)ⓘ that is before me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord at Se'ìrⓘ».
15
And Esau said: «Then I will leave with you some of the people who are with me». And he said: «Why this?ⓘ Let me find chen in the eyes of my lord».
16
And Esau returned on that day by his road toward Se'ìr.
17
And Yaaqòv journeyed toward Sukkòt (booths) and built himself a house; for his livestock he made sukkòt (booths)ⓘ. Therefore he called the name of that place Sukkòtⓘ — the name is born from the concrete deed: not a city, but an encampment of care for the flock.
18
And Yaaqòv came shalèmⓘ — sound and whole — to the city of Shekhem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his coming from Paddan-Aràm, and he encamped (vayyichàn)ⓘ before the city.
19
—— Septuagint (LXX) ——And he acquired the portion of the field — tēn merída tû agrû — there where he had pitchedⓘ his tent (skēnḗ), near Emmòr, father of Sychèm, for a hundred lambsⓘ.—— Masoretic (MT) ——And he bought the chelqàt hassadèh (portion of the field)ⓘ where he had pitched his tent, from the hand of the sons of Chamòr, father of Shekhem, for a hundred qesitàⓘ — qesità: an ancient unit of weight, perhaps an effigy of a lamb, an archaic measure of value.
20
And there he erected a mizzbeàch (altar)ⓘ and he called it El Elohèi Yisraèlⓘ — «God is the God of Israel»: the name of the altar is a confession of faith, not a universal divine title but a declaration of the particular bond between this God (Elohìm) and this people.
