GreekΚαὶ ⸀εὐθὺς πρωῒ συμβούλιον ποιήσαντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον δήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήνεγκαν καὶ ⸀παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd immediately, in the morning, having held councilⓘ, the kohanim of the temple summit (the chief priests, archiereîs)ⓘ with the elders (zeqenim)ⓘ, the scribes (soferim)ⓘ and the whole Sanhedrinⓘ, having bound Jesusⓘ they led him away and handed him over to Pilateⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ⸂αὐτῷ λέγει⸃· Σὺ λέγεις.
Orthodox ReadingAnd Pilate questioned him: «Are you the king of the Jewsⓘ?». And he, answering, says to himⓘ: «You say soⓘ».

Greekκαὶ κατηγόρουν αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς πολλά.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the chief priests kept accusing him insistently of many things before the Roman governor.

Greekὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ⸀ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν λέγων· Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν; ἴδε πόσα σου ⸀κατηγοροῦσιν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd Pilate questioned him again, asking him: «Do you answer nothing at all? See for yourself of how many things they accuse youⓘ!».

Greekὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίθη, ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν Πιλᾶτον.
Orthodox ReadingBut Jesus answered nothing furtherⓘ, so that Pilate was amazedⓘ.

GreekΚατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ⸂ὃν παρῃτοῦντο⸃.
Orthodox ReadingFor the feast of Pesachⓘ he used to release to them a prisonerⓘ, the one whom they requested.

Greekἦν δὲ ὁ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν ⸀στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν.
Orthodox ReadingThere was the so-called Barabbasⓘ, bound with the armed rebels (biryonim, stasiastôn)ⓘ, who in the insurrection had committed a murderⓘ.

Greekκαὶ ⸀ἀναβὰς ὁ ὄχλος ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι ⸀καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the crowdⓘ, having come up, began to ask for what he was accustomed to do for them.

Greekὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων· Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
Orthodox ReadingPilate answered: «Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?».

Greekἐγίνωσκεν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παραδεδώκεισαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς.
Orthodox ReadingFor he knew that the chief priests had handed him over out of envyⓘ.

Greekοἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀνέσεισαν τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μᾶλλον τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἀπολύσῃ αὐτοῖς.
Orthodox ReadingBut the chief priests stirred up the crowdⓘ so that he would rather release Barabbas to them.

Greekὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ⸂πάλιν ἀποκριθεὶς ἔλεγεν⸃ αὐτοῖς· Τί οὖν ⸀θέλετε ποιήσω ⸂ὃν λέγετε⸃ ⸀τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
Orthodox ReadingPilate again, answering, was saying: «What then do you wantⓘ that I do with the one whom you call the king of the Jews?».

Greekοἱ δὲ πάλιν ἔκραξαν· Σταύρωσον αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd they again cried out: «Crucify himⓘ!».

Greekὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· Τί γὰρ ⸂ἐποίησεν κακόν⸃; οἱ δὲ ⸀περισσῶς ἔκραξαν· Σταύρωσον αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingPilate then said to them once more: «But what evil has he ever doneⓘ?». But they cried out all the more loudlyⓘ: «Crucify him at once!».

Greekὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος βουλόμενος τῷ ὄχλῳ τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιῆσαι ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν, καὶ παρέδωκεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας ἵνα σταυρωθῇ.
Orthodox ReadingPilate, wishing to satisfy the crowdⓘ, released Barabbas to them and, having scourged Jesusⓘ, handed him over to be crucifiedⓘ.
