19
Orthodox ReadingThe high priest, the kohen gadol , of the priestly caste at the summit, the archiereîs kohanim of the Sadducean party (the ), questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, the talmidim and his public teaching , seeking to gather evidence against him.
20
Orthodox ReadingJesus answered him: «I have openly spoken to the world with frankness, the parresia ; I always taught in the synagogue, the bet ha-knesset where the Torah is read and in the Temple, the Bet ha-Miqdash , there where all the Jews assemble, and in secret I have said nothing.
212
Orthodox ReadingWhy do you question me? Question rather those who have heard what I taught them: the trial rests on the testimony of witnesses, the , not on the accused himself; behold, these men know well what I have said.»
222
Greekταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς παρεστηκὼς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἔδωκεν ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰπών· Οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ;
Orthodox ReadingHaving said these things, one of the attendants of the sanctuary, the meshartim in the service of the kohen gadol who stood by gave a slap to Jesus, saying: «Is this how you answer the high priest, the kohen gadol?» — a gesture of grave contempt, contrary to the halakhah that forbids striking the accused before sentence.
2324
Greekἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ· εἰ δὲ καλῶς, τί με δέρεις;
Orthodox ReadingJesus answered him: «If I have spoken wrongly, bring the probative deposition — show in what I have erred; but if I have spoken well, why then do you strike me?» — an assertion of the accused's right to a defense against unjust violence.
242
Orthodox ReadingHe sent him therefore did Ḥanan, still bound , to Caiaphas, the kohen gadol in office that year — the formal transfer of custody from one authority to another, according to the trial procedure.
