13
Orthodox ReadingThey brought to the Pharisees (perushim, the observant) the man who had formerly been blind:
142
Orthodox Readingit was Shabbat (the sabbath), the day on which Jesus had made clayⓘ and had opened his eyes.
15
Orthodox ReadingThe Pharisees (perushim) too questioned him againⓘ as to how he had gained his sight: «He put clay on my eyes, I washed, and I can see».
16
Orthodox ReadingSome of the Pharisees (perushim), the observant: «He is not from God, because by kneading the clay he performs one of the melakhot (the works forbidden on Shabbat: here the lishah, the kneading) and does not keep the Shabbat — a non-urgent healing could have waited until the next dayⓘ». Others among the perushim: «How can a sinnerⓘ perform such signsⓘ?». There was dissension among themⓘ.
17
Orthodox ReadingTo the blind man: «What do you say?». «He is a prophetⓘ!».
18
Orthodox ReadingThe Judean authorities (the heads of the synagogue) did not believe, until they summoned the parents as edim (the witnesses of the deposition), to verify the blindness from birthⓘ.
22
Orthodox ReadingThe parents spoke thus out of fear of the Judean authoritiesⓘ: they had already resolved that whoever acknowledged Jesus as Mašiaḥ (Christ, the royal Anointed) should incur the niddui (the ban from the bet knesset, the synagogue) and be excluded from the assembly (qahal), aposynagogosⓘ.
24
Orthodox ReadingThey put him under oath (shevu'ah): «Give glory to Godⓘ! We know that he is a sinner».
25
Orthodox Reading«Whether he is a sinner I do not know; one thing I know: I was blind and now I can seeⓘ».
27
Greekἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς· Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε· τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν; μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι;
Orthodox Reading«I have told you: do you perhaps also want to become his disciplesⓘ?».
28
Orthodox ReadingThey reviledⓘ him: «You are a disciple of that man; we are disciples of Mosheh (Moses)ⓘ!
29
Orthodox ReadingWe know that God has spoken to Moshehⓘ; but as for this man, we do not know where he is from».
30
Orthodox Reading«Strange: you do not know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.
311
Orthodox ReadingGod does not listen to sinnersⓘ, but he listens to whoever is God-fearing (theosebḗs, the one who has the yir'at shamayim, the fear of Heaven) and does his willⓘ.
33
Orthodox ReadingIf this man were not from God, he could do nothingⓘ».
34
Orthodox Reading«You were born wholly in sins, and you teach usⓘ?». And they drove him outⓘ.
