Orthodox ReadingSome of the inhabitants of Jerusalemⓘ were therefore saying: «Is this not the one they seek to killⓘ?

Greekκαὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν· μήποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ⸀ἐστιν ὁ χριστός;
Orthodox ReadingAnd behold, he speaks openlyⓘ, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the notables and the elders (zeqenim) (the árchontesⓘ) have truly recognized that this man is the Christ?

Greekἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν· ὁ δὲ χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν.
Orthodox ReadingYet we know where this man comes from; but the Christ, when he comes, no one will know where he comes fromⓘ».

Greekἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ λέγων· Κἀμὲ οἴδατε καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί· καὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα, ἀλλ’ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς ὁ πέμψας με, ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε·
Orthodox ReadingJesus then, teaching in the Templeⓘ, cried outⓘ saying: «You know me and you know where I am from; yet I have not come of my own selfⓘ, but he who sent me is truthfulⓘ, whom you do not know.

Greekἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν, ὅτι παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰμι κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν.

Greek⸂ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου δὲ πολλοὶ⸃ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ ⸀ἔλεγον· Ὁ χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ ⸀μὴ πλείονα ⸀σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν;
Orthodox ReadingFrom the crowdⓘ, however, many believed in him, and they were saying: «When the Christ comes, will he perhaps perform more signsⓘ than this man has done?».

GreekἬκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα, καὶ ἀπέστειλαν ⸂οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας⸃ ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν.
Orthodox ReadingThe Pharisees (perushim — the scrupulous observers of the oral Torahⓘ) heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and the chief priests, the archiereis of Sadducean extraction (Saddoukaioi) — the kohanim gedolim, the priestly summit of the Temple (the kohanim of the summitⓘ) — together with the Pharisees (perushim) sent the Temple guards in the service of the kohanim (hypēretaiⓘ) to arrest him.

Greekεἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἔτι ⸂χρόνον μικρὸν⸃ μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με.

Greekζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ ⸀εὑρήσετε, καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν.
