Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν· οὐκ ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἀλλὰ μάχαιραν.
Non crediate che io sia venuto a portare pace sulla terra; non sono venuto a portare pace, ma una spada.
Do not think that I have come to bring peace on the earthⓘ; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword (ḥerev) swordⓘ.

ἦλθον γὰρ διχάσαι ἄνθρωπον κατὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ θυγατέρα κατὰ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς καὶ νύμφην κατὰ τῆς πενθερᾶς αὐτῆς,
Sono infatti venuto a separare il figlio dal padre, la figlia dalla madre, la nuora dalla suocera;
I have come to separateⓘ the son from the father, the daughter from the mother, the daughter-in-law from the mother-in-lawⓘ;

καὶ ἐχθροὶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οἱ οἰκιακοὶ αὐτοῦ.
e i nemici dell'uomo saranno quelli della sua casa.
and a man's enemies will be the members of his own householdⓘ.

ὁ φιλῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος· καὶ ὁ φιλῶν υἱὸν ἢ θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος·
Chi ama padre o madre più di me, non è degno di me; chi ama figlio o figlia più di me, non è degno di me;
Whoever lovesⓘ father or mother more than me is not worthy of meⓘ; whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

καὶ ὃς οὐ λαμβάνει τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθεῖ ὀπίσω μου, οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος.
chi non prende la propria croce e non mi segue, non è degno di me.
whoever does not take up upon himselfⓘ his own crossⓘ and follows meⓘ, is not worthy of me.

ὁ εὑρὼν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν, καὶ ὁ ἀπολέσας τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν.
Chi avrà tenuto per sé la propria vita, la perderà, e chi avrà perduto la propria vita per causa mia, la troverà.
Whoever has foundⓘ his own lifeⓘ will lose itⓘ, and whoever has lost his own life for my sakeⓘ will find itⓘ.
