43
«You have heard that it was saidⓘ: You shall love your neighbor — the great principle of the Torahⓘ, kelal gadol ba-Torahⓘ — and you shall hate your enemy. But this second clause is not in the Torah: it is the sectarian interpretation of the sons of lightⓘ. Jesus takes issue with the exclusivist reading of the re'aⓘ.
44
But I say to you: love — with the covenant love-faithfulness (agàpeⓘ) — your enemies, and pray for those who persecute youⓘ,
45
so that you may become sons of your Father who is in the heavens — sons by likenessⓘ — for he makes the sun rise on the wicked and on the good and makes it rainⓘ on the just and the unjust. This is the category of the divine chesedⓘ.
46
ἐὰν γὰρ ἀγαπήσητε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς, τίνα μισθὸν ἔχετε; οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ τελῶναι τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσι;
For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not the gabbaiⓘ — the collectors — do the same?
47
καὶ ἐὰν ἀσπάσησθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν μόνον, τί περισσὸν ποιεῖτε; οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ τελῶναι οὕτω ποιοῦσιν;
And if you greetⓘ only your brothers, those belonging to the covenant, what more do you do? Do not the collectorsⓘ do the same?
48
Voi, dunque, siate perfetti come è perfetto il Padre vostro celeste.
You therefore be tamimⓘ — whole, entire — as Leviticus 19:2 saysⓘ: not abstract moral perfection, but totality of the covenant, halakhic integrity — as your heavenly Father is tamim.»
