GreekΟἱ δὲ κρατήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήγαγον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα, ὅπου οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι συνήχθησαν.

Orthodox ReadingThose who had arrested Jesus led him away to the high priest (kohen gadòl) Caiaphasⓘ, where the scribes (soferim) and the elders (zeqenim) had assembled.

Greekὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἕως τῆς αὐλῆς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἔσω ἐκάθητο μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἰδεῖν τὸ τέλος.

Orthodox ReadingPeter, meanwhile, had followed him at a distance, as far as the courtyardⓘ of the high priest; and going in, he had sat down among the attendantsⓘ, to see how it would all end.

Greekοἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ⸀καὶ τὸ συνέδριον ὅλον ἐζήτουν ψευδομαρτυρίαν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὅπως ⸂αὐτὸν θανατώσωσιν⸃,

Orthodox ReadingNow the chief priests (archiereis, the kohanim of the temple's highest rank) and the whole Sanhedrin (the council, the supreme tribunal of Jerusalem) were seeking false testimonyⓘ against Jesus, in order to put him to death;

Greekκαὶ οὐχ εὗρον ⸂πολλῶν προσελθόντων ψευδομαρτύρων. ὕστερον δὲ προσελθόντες δύο⸃

Orthodox Readingand they found none, although many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward,

Greekεἶπαν· Οὗτος ἔφη· Δύναμαι καταλῦσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν ⸀οἰκοδομῆσαι.

Orthodox Readingwho said: «This man declared: I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three daysⓘ».

Greekκαὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;

Orthodox ReadingAnd the high priest, standing up, said to him: «Do you make no answer? What is it that these men testify against you?».

Greekὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐσιώπα. ⸀καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἐξορκίζω σε κατὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος ἵνα ἡμῖν εἴπῃς εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ.

Orthodox ReadingBut Jesus kept silentⓘ. And the high priest said to him: «I adjure you by the living Godⓘ, to tell us whether you are the Mashiach, the Son of Godⓘ».

Greekλέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Σὺ εἶπας· πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἀπ’ ἄρτι ὄψεσθε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενον ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.

Orthodox ReadingJesus says to him: «You have said itⓘ; moreover I say to you: from now on you will see the Son of manⓘ seated at the right hand of the Powerⓘ and coming on the clouds of heaven».

Greekτότε ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ⸀λέγων· Ἐβλασφήμησεν· τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων; ἴδε νῦν ἠκούσατε τὴν ⸀βλασφημίαν·

Orthodox ReadingThen the high priest tore his garmentsⓘ saying: «He has blasphemedⓘ! Why do we still need witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy;

Greekτί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ; οἱ δὲ ἀποκριθέντες εἶπαν· Ἔνοχος θανάτου ἐστίν.

Orthodox Readingwhat is your judgment?». And they answered: «He is guilty of deathⓘ!».

Greekτότε ἐνέπτυσαν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκολάφισαν αὐτόν, οἱ δὲ ἐράπισαν

Orthodox ReadingThen they spat in his faceⓘ and struck him; and others slapped him,

Greekλέγοντες· Προφήτευσον ἡμῖν, χριστέ, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σε;
