GreekἘν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἐπορεύθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς σάββασιν διὰ τῶν σπορίμων· οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπείνασαν καὶ ἤρξαντο τίλλειν στάχυας καὶ ἐσθίειν.
Orthodox ReadingAt that time Jesus passed through the grainfields on shabbat on shabbatⓘ; his disciplesⓘ were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat them, thereby performing a forbidden melakhahⓘ.

Greekοἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἰδόντες εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Ἰδοὺ οἱ μαθηταί σου ποιοῦσιν ὃ οὐκ ἔξεστιν ποιεῖν ἐν σαββάτῳ.
Orthodox ReadingThe Pharisees (perushim), the scrupulous observants — not «hypocrites», but masters who raise a genuine halakhic question —, when they saw it, said to him: «Look, your disciples are doing what is not permitted on the sabbath».

Greekἢ οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ἐν τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι τοῖς σάββασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τὸ σάββατον βεβηλοῦσιν καὶ ἀναίτιοί εἰσιν;
Orthodox ReadingOr have you not read in the Torahⓘ that on the sabbath the priests (kohanim) in the temple, in the avodahⓘ, profane the sabbath and are without guilt?

Orthodox Readingand behold, a manⓘ who had a withered hand. And they questioned him: «Is it permitted to heal on the sabbath?», so that they might accuse himⓘ.

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Τίς ⸀ἔσται ἐξ ὑμῶν ἄνθρωπος ὃς ἕξει πρόβατον ἕν, καὶ ἐὰν ἐμπέσῃ τοῦτο τοῖς σάββασιν εἰς βόθυνον, οὐχὶ κρατήσει αὐτὸ καὶ ἐγερεῖ;
Orthodox ReadingAnd he said to them: «Who among you, having a single sheep, if it falls into a pit on the sabbath, does not take hold of it and pull it out?ⓘ

Greekπόσῳ οὖν διαφέρει ἄνθρωπος προβάτου. ὥστε ἔξεστιν τοῖς σάββασιν καλῶς ποιεῖν.
Orthodox ReadingHow much more is a man worth than a sheep!ⓘ It is therefore permitted to do good on the sabbathⓘ».

Greekτότε λέγει τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ· Ἔκτεινόν ⸂σου τὴν χεῖρα⸃· καὶ ἐξέτεινεν, καὶ ἀπεκατεστάθη ὑγιὴς ὡς ἡ ἄλλη.
Orthodox ReadingThen he said to the man: «Stretch out your hand». He stretched it out, and it was restored, sound as the other.

Greek⸂ἐξελθόντες δὲ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον κατ’ αὐτοῦ⸃ ὅπως αὐτὸν ἀπολέσωσιν.
