GreekΕἶπεν δέ τις ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου αὐτῷ· Διδάσκαλε, εἰπὲ τῷ ἀδελφῷ μου μερίσασθαι μετ' ἐμοῦ τὴν κληρονομίαν.
Orthodox ReadingSomeone from the crowd said to him: «Teacher , tell my brother to divide the inheritance, the yerushah with me» — asking the Teacher for a halakhic verdict on the division of goods.

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἄνθρωπε, τίς με κατέστησεν κριτὴν ἢ μεριστὴν ἐφ' ὑμᾶς;

Greekεἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· Ὁρᾶτε καὶ φυλάσσεσθε ἀπὸ πάσης πλεονεξίας, ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ περισσεύειν τινὶ ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he said to them: «See and guard yourselves from all covetousness — that craving which the tenth word of the Decalogue, the «you shall not covet», the lo taḥmod, forbids the observant one as a binding commandment, a mitzvah —, for not in the abundance of one's possessions does one's life consist, beginning from one's goods».

Greekκαὶ διελογίζετο ἐν ἑαυτῷ λέγων· Τί ποιήσω, ὅτι οὐκ ἔχω ποῦ συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου;
Orthodox ReadingAnd he reasoned within himself saying: 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to gather my fruits, the harvest on which the tithe was due, the ma'aser ?'.

Greekεἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ θεός· Ἄφρων, ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τὴν ψυχήν σου ἀπαιτοῦσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ· ἃ δὲ ἡτοίμασας, τίνι ἔσται;
Orthodox ReadingBut God said to him: 'Fool , this very night your soul ****; and what you prepared, whose will it be?'.
