Orthodox ReadingIn answer he was telling themⓘ: «Whoever has two tunicsⓘ, let him shareⓘ one with whoever has none; and whoever has foodⓘ, let him do likewiseⓘ.

Greekὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Μηδὲν πλέον παρὰ τὸ διατεταγμένον ὑμῖν πράσσετε.
Orthodox ReadingHe said to them: «Nothing more than what has been prescribed for youⓘ exact» — the problem of the first-century gabbai was not the collection itself, but the extortion beyond the established taxⓘ. He does not demand the abandonment of the trade, but the rectification of the corrupt practice.
