GreekΠιλᾶτος δὲ ἀκούσας ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν,
Orthodox ReadingAnd Pilate, hearing this, asked whether the man was a Galilean .

Greekκαὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην, ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις.
Orthodox ReadingAnd, having ascertained that he was under the jurisdiction of Herod , he sent him back to Herod, who was himself also at Jerusalem in those days.

Greekὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν, ἦν γὰρ ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ' αὐτοῦ γινόμενον.
Orthodox ReadingAnd Herod, seeing Jesus, rejoiced greatly , for he had long enough desired to see him on account of what he heard concerning him, and he hoped to see some sign performed by him.

Greekἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς, αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd he questioned him with many words, but he answered him nothing .

Greekεἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd there stood the chief priests (the archiereîs, kohanim of the temple summit) and the scribes (the soferim, experts of the Torah) , and vehemently accusing him .

Greekἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν [καὶ] ὁ Ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας περιβαλὼν ἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd Herod, after treating him with contempt together with his troops and mocking him, having thrown a splendid robe upon him , he sent him back to Pilate.

Greekἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι ὅ τε Ἡρῴδης καὶ ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετ' ἀλλήλων· προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς αὑτούς.
Orthodox ReadingAnd on that same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; for before they had been at enmity one with another .
