GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς ἐπορεύθη εἰς πόλιν καλουμένην Ναΐν, καὶ συνεπορεύοντο αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὄχλος πολύς.
Orthodox ReadingAnd it came to pass afterward that he went to a city called Nain, and his disciples walked with him, and a great crowd .

Greekὡς δὲ ἤγγισεν τῇ πύλῃ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐξεκομίζετο τεθνηκὼς μονογενὴς υἱὸς τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὴ ἦν χήρα, καὶ ὄχλος τῆς πόλεως ἱκανὸς ἦν σὺν αὐτῇ.
Orthodox ReadingAs he drew near to the city gate , behold, one was being carried out beyond the walls — where the tombs lay, on account of the tum'at met (the impurity of death) — a dead man, the only-begotten son , the only son of his mother, and she was a widow , and a numerous crowd of the city was with her.

Greekκαὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν ὁ κύριος ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ' αὐτῇ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ· Μὴ κλαῖε.
Orthodox ReadingAnd when he saw her, the Lord was moved with bowels of mercy for her and said to her: «Weep not» .

Greekκαὶ προσελθὼν ἥψατο τῆς σοροῦ, οἱ δὲ βαστάζοντες ἔστησαν, καὶ εἶπεν· Νεανίσκε, σοὶ λέγω, ἐγέρθητι.
Orthodox ReadingAnd drawing near, he touched the bier — a contact that transmits the tum'at met (the impurity of death), but here the holiness that gives life overpowers the impurity instead of being contaminated by it —, and the bearers stopped; and he said: «Young man, I say to you: arise» .

Greekκαὶ ἀνεκάθισεν ὁ νεκρὸς καὶ ἤρξατο λαλεῖν, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd the dead man sat up and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother .

Greekἔλαβεν δὲ φόβος πάντας καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν θεὸν λέγοντες ὅτι Προφήτης μέγας ἠγέρθη ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ὅτι Ἐπεσκέψατο ὁ θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ.
Orthodox ReadingAnd fear seized all, and they glorified God saying: «A great prophet has arisen among us» and: «God has visited his people» .

Greekκαὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ λόγος οὗτος ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ πάσῃ τῇ περιχώρῳ.
