Orthodox ReadingAnd it came to passⓘ that in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustusⓘ that a censusⓘ should be made of all the inhabited earth.

Greekκαὶ τοῦτο ὑμῖν ⸀τὸ σημεῖον, εὑρήσετε βρέφος ἐσπαργανωμένον ⸀καὶ κείμενον ἐν φάτνῃ.

Greekκαὶ ἐξαίφνης ἐγένετο σὺν τῷ ἀγγέλῳ πλῆθος στρατιᾶς ⸀οὐρανίου αἰνούντων τὸν θεὸν καὶ λεγόντων·

GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἀπῆλθον ἀπ’ αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν οἱ ἄγγελοι, ⸀οἱ ποιμένες ⸀ἐλάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Διέλθωμεν δὴ ἕως Βηθλέεμ καὶ ἴδωμεν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο τὸ γεγονὸς ὃ ὁ κύριος ἐγνώρισεν ἡμῖν.
Orthodox ReadingAnd it came to pass that, as soon as the angels had departed from them toward heaven, the shepherds said to one another: «Let us go then as far as Bethlehem, and let us see this happeningⓘ which the Lord has made known to us».

Orthodox ReadingAnd when the eight days prescribed for circumcisionⓘ were fulfilled — the berit milah, the entrance into the covenant of Israel — he was given the name Jesusⓘ, as he had been called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
